How to Handle Neighbors Dogs

If a dog isn’t threatening me I’ll chase it off and severely admonish my neighbor. If the monster deficates in my yard I’ll throw it back onto their property.

If a dog attacks, I’ll do whatever I need to.

Which no one disputed, correct?

I said “randomly shooting dogs”. I didn’t say “don’t shoot if they’re attacking”.

The best course of action is still to get to safety if you can and let the cops handle it - as told to me by multiple police officers and deputies. You seriously don’t just want to shoot, and you need to be sure you have a clear shot when you do it. That’s not always possible in a back yard, and if you create collateral damage, you’ve bought yourself even more trouble.

Bullets go through walls very easily. The best course of action is - if possible - to get to safety.

I don’t disagree. But mals are in a completely different league than a pit. They’re properly bred working dogs. Pits are generally picked up at shelters by people who think they’re doing some great deed by giving home to an animal that people distrust for no reason. Reality is, pits have a bad reputation for a very good reason. And then when their pit eats a toddler it’s always excuses and how that dog was so sweet and they’re shocked he would harm anyone.

I am uncertain escalation is the best course of action.

This might surprise people, but if my mal came on the wrong side of a weapon and he was described as running full tilt and looking aggressive, I couldn’t blame a person for shooting him. I’d be upset, and I’d be devastated, and I feel pretty safe in saying there’s almost no chance of that ever happening - but he can be scary looking just because he “looks” like what he is - a working dog.
I suppose a sword or lance would be better…
Forgive me, but it’s common sense when you’re using a weapon to only fire if you have a clear shot with nothing behind what you’re shooting. Only aim at something you intend to shoot, and only fire with a clear shot. Basic - very basic - firearms safety. I wouldn’t fire in the direction of a wall. That’s how people die in drive-bys while sitting in their living room. That’s an actual thing.

I’ve quite literally seen it happen. The kid must have pulled the dogs ear or tail or something they say.

Granted in the end it’s the idiot that decided to own a pit bull who’s truly to blame.

It’s never the best course of action. That was the beauty of being a K9 handler. Usually people shut up when the dog showed up.

Shooting should be the last resort in any situation, whether you’re a cop or not. If you can get to safety safely, you should get to safety.

I’ve done everything but having to fight my neighbors dogs. They get all the poop back and I have sternly talked to them.

I have 2 Catahoula’s. They’re quite large and were bred to hunt feral hogs. They can be quite intimidating and I’d feel the same as what you described.

I’d also never leave them alone with children, even though they’ve never shown aggression to children or adults, and I’m usually very cautious when introducing new people. The younger one is a very affectionate dog and the other is quite standoffish with new people. I just exercise an over abundance of caution out of prudence.

Mine can be ambivalent as well. He gets nervous and hyper. I trust him, but like Reagan, I verify. LOL.

The older one is also super protective of the younger one, if she feels it’s getting too rough when playing with other dogs she can get quite defensive over her. But I’ve learned to manage it.

Mine came from a no-kill and was clearly mistreated - he was nine months old and weighed 13 pounds and used to eat his own excrement (big sign of malnutrition). He’s mellowed with age, but there was a time when he was a handful. He’s come a long way and has been through a lot, but his memory is sharp - so I’m sure he well recalls whatever it was he went through, knows he has a good thing now (spoiled as he is), and isn’t about to give it up.

He loves whom he loves, and it’s just the way he is.

He adores my mother. Few things are funnier than an 87 pound Mali losing his mind when you ask about Grandma.

I love working dogs of any breed, but you really have to “learn” them, and they need a “job”. Or they’re a mess. LOL.

I watched some idiot let his dog pee on my mailbox and poo in my yard once. On leash. He was pretty shocked when I walked out on my porch (and I didn’t find the poo in my yard again, either). I knew someone was doing it and I was glad I caught the culprit.

What is with people? I’d give them the poo back as well.

Listen buster, I live in Hell. People are shot and killed weekly in my area. There are drive-by shootings and people get killed. I KNOW!
Some people actually don’t know that bullets can indeed and actually do go through walls, and alarmingly easily as well. No need to scream at me. I’m glad you do know. Many don’t.

Yep, it’s hard to believe…

I cannot tell you what to do. But I would certainly act quickly if I thought my children were in mortal danger from aggressive pets. I’ve seen the outcome twice of inaction in the face of such danger. It was truly tragic and there was no fixing it.

Definitely get really good pictures of the signs they put up warning people about their dogs. Borrow a good camera if you must.

Those rollers seem like a great idea, along with the sonic anti-bark devices. Even if they are not your permanent solution, and even if they only protect your back yard, it seems like it would be worth it.
