How to Handle Neighbors Dogs

We keep talking about making the fence higher, but didn’t the neighbor’s wife say something about the dog digging under? Terriers are diggers. With my Irish Terrier I started with heavy wire on the inside of a three rail fence, then had to bury and nail 2x4s along the bottom to staple the wire to. When that didn’t work I ended up adding an invisible fence.

You might want to see if the dog is going under rather than over.

Concertina Wire perhaps?

Not so much. Actually the one thing I found to keep my dog from digging was to drop dog poop in any hole I found.

We have hedges in our yard now, in part to keep our dogs away from the fence. The greyhound is constantly covered with scratches from running through the bushes.

FIRST take 10 minutes to talk to the neighbor. You may very well find they do not want the dog to be out of their yard and they will work with your to contain the dog.

Then, Google the name of your town + “leash law”. You will find that your town has a leash law. Every time the dog is outside of the yard you call in the violation. Lather, rinse, repeat. You will find that the dog owners do not want to keep showing up for the tickets, and they may install a high fence.

Lastly, learn what to do (and teach your kids) if you are approached by a growling dog. What you DON’T want to do is run away, squeal, whine, cry - that is what prey does. When you get to saying NO, say it in a low toned, loud voice.

Kicking helps too! I’ve used that a few times when a dog approached too close and quick. Granted, it helps if you’re wearing boots and pants. Nevertheless, don’t get knocked down or get your face chewed off 😬🤕

I do. She is working on winning friends and influencing people atm 😎😀

I caught two border collies chasing my stock a few weeks ago. Tied them up and called the ranger. They had travelled about 10 km from their home.

They were friendly and easy to catch. One was wearing a collar. So I tied him up with that old trusty stand by, Hay bale twine. The other wasn’t wearing a collar. I put a spare collar on him and tied him up. Both to a paddock fence.

They were microchipped. All dogs must be by law here, so the ranger scanned their chip and rang the owner. The owner was really apologetic and came to collect them. Any vet bills were the owners responsibility to pay, enforced by the ranger. I did have the legal right to shoot them. But they were obviously friendly pets. Not working border collies.

The tan and white one was so clean on his white fur! Big giveaway of a much loved pet dog.

You’d need a ditch digger to dig under a properly installed privacy fence. Trust me.

So. Stinking. Jealous. I love them. I love that wavy face. 😉

For the uninitiated…I present the Lakenois. 😍😍😍😍 Don’t tell my boy that I’m in love. 🙂 She’s female - he might approve. He loves the ladies LOL.

I wonder if you can win them over by visiting your neighbor regularly with the owner present, with kids… And maybe have the owner come over to your yard, maybe throw dog treats regularly. I do wonder if with some actions like these the dogs could come to see you as an extension of their family. Maybe too optimistic though!

Pit bulls are pretty common in the states?

I am a huge border collie fan. We rescued Sophie. She was a malnourished stray stirring up someone’s livestock. I saw a Facebook post indicating that if someone didn’t come get her, she’d be shot.
