How to Handle Neighbors Dogs

So I have to wake up and close my window when you decide it’s time to pollute the air. Like I said, people with fires going on in their backyard can be quite inconsiderate. They should just explore the great indoors.
Yep. Because it’s on my property. You’re the one that doesn’t like it. Good luck complaining about the neighbor’s cigarette.

For the record I don’t smoke. And I find the habit disgusting. But I’m not a cop for my neighbor. If I shut the window, I’ve solved my problem: the smoke bothers me.

Thinking everyone else should conform their behavior to what pleases oneself is pretty un-neighborly in my book.

Our police are actually really quick. They have multiple patrol cars and we’re in a low-crime area. They will write a report and citation. The problem is that they can’t do anymore than that without a lawsuit and some people (like the owners of the dog that got euthanized) are fine with just paying the fine (or not paying and racking up a huge bill and legal fees) but still don’t do anything. The problem isn’t that the police are slow to react, it’s that the court is slow to file a case and remove the dog.

So if I want to play loud rock music in my basement and leave the windows open, you wouldn’t call me out on it? That would be equally inconsiderate. There you were enjoying the peaceful sound of birds from through your bedroom window, open a centimetre, feeling the breeze. Now you have to get up and close your window because a neighbour thinks she has to blast sound all around.

Noise ordinance violations aren’t having a legal fire pit in your backyard.

I don’t think anything about that post is “bashing police” and definitely not calling them all “corrupt”. He’s right. I never heard of the police doing anything directly about a dog until it has actually bitten someone. The judge is the one that orders the surrender of a dog because of multiple dog at large citations.

I was thinking more along the lines of if they are having a party where they were going to have a firepit going for a long period of time. And they wouldn’t have to wake you up. A post-it on the door the day before would be fine. I’m not saying they are required to do this, but there’s nothing wrong with being considerate. Smoking a cigarette is different. If you’re patio is close enough that smoke from ONE cigarette is going into the window, then you’re going to just have to keep that window closed.

We ve all been young… 🙂
Many of us have tormented neighbours every now and then with our music and survived thanks to their patience and understanding.
And who knows. … They may have been dancing to our music in their living rooms …

No, I don’t think someone needs to tell their neighbor they’re going to have a fire pit burning for six hours.

Should they also tell me “hey, we heat our house with a fireplace even though we have central air, so we’ll be using that all winter long and there will be smoke - if that’s a problem, let us know”?

That kind of warning just says, “We’re going to be inconsiderate of you for many hours tomorrow. Just thought we’d let you know, so you could accommodate us.”

And that neighbour actually did leave his house with the fire going, and it kept smouldering for many many hours. My guess is over 18hours but it was years ago.

I really think CAF needs to rename this Catholic Arguing Forum. Because we obviously love arguing…🤣🤣🤣

LOL. It bugs me now but I figure (1) it’s a weekend so MYOB, Pup, and (2) it’s karma because I’m sure I’ve been equally guilty. 😄😄😄

I don’t consider that “cop bashing” either. If department is stretched thin, as I’m told many are, I hope they DO focus on the more dangerous crimes before a dog-at-large issue. It’s obnoxious that I have to bring my family inside because someone else’s dog got out, but I don’t want them rushing to my aid if someone else’s car just got stolen or someone got shot!

Not if the lead/chain/tether/rope is short enough that they can’t actually make it to the fence.

In our state, a person can shoot a dog that threatens or attacks livestock, pets, people, etc. with immunity.
I’ve lived in seven states. I get it varies by locality - which is why I said “can land you in court”.

In one state I’ve lived in, I could shoot someone in my neighbor’s house if I believed that individual meant harm to my neighbor. I can’t do that in the state I live in now. We all know (or we should) that laws vary.
It really surprised me when I found out about it.

We know they’re there to serve the state. But they don’t deliberately delay based on the nature of the call. That’s cop bashing.
I didn’t say they delayed. They prioritize calls. A loose dog is a low priority call.

All part of the same system. The broader point is you’re not likely to get satisfaction from the system but will spend a fair amount of time dealing with it.
