How to motivate my husband to work?

Ana, I’m going to be gentle here, so try to understand where I’m coming from and place your husband in my shoes. There are sometimes legitimate reasons men are compelled to quit jobs. My wife and I also have 3 children. I resigned from a good job over 2 years ago and returned to school and chose to go further into debt for the purpose of supporting the family. My wife says she supports me, but when I ask for a little time alone (marital act) she says she has too much to do. Well, it’s a miracle that we even have children because in the beginning she refused to get off of birth control, later would not “be” with me, and literally pushed and drove me away with her always threatening to move. Truth is I’ve decided if she ever does that again, I will not try to stop her.

Women get away with treating me like pimp daddies with feelings. The truth is that we are constantly bombarded unfairly in society and because of the changing roles of men and women in society we are pushed further and further down on the ladder. Decent jobs are harder to come by. The economy does make a difference, and depending on the type of job he had and his mental and physical condition. If he’s like me, he may be tired of feeling used and marginalized by not only society but also his own wife. The more you push him away the worse it will become. If those 3 children are only yours and not his, then why is it so bad he stays home with them? It’s true that I’m a grad student and he probably isn’t, but not everyone has the same talents.

It sounds like he’s deeply depressed. Be careful what you wish or strive for, you might get it and then look at the mess you’ll have to clean up. One of my brothers took his life after growing up in a broken family. Is that the message you wish to teach your children? I think not. You will survive. You’re just stressed. And if you’re that close to graduation from college, then why not get a better job, like you expect your husband. He may have had a mental breakdown and you want to abandon him in his time of need. I don’t know either of you or those on this thread. But for your sakes, get both of you to see a priest in your area that has a counseling background. Catholic Charities is your best bet, drag him there if you need to after giving him an ultimatum or something. However, be very careful. The pain of my wife threatening to leave me (for now good reason) in the past has left me feeling the only reason I never left her was not to destroy her. I protected her from her own self-destructive behavior. Had we no children I would never have convalidated our marriage. There, I was finally openly honest about how I feel. I keep those secrets to myself and plan to continue. However, each time she says something mean or pointless that intentionally hurts me to get through something, just pushes the possible date of a “D” word closer. I’m avoiding it. But being infinitely put off for sex with no really good reason is unacceptable, particularly after making be feel like a dog that always wants it. What’s wrong with a man wanting to love his wife? Women need to stop treating men like animals as if we don’t have feelings or as if we can’t do without. I’m perfectly capable of being celebate. I’ve lived the life. She threw herself at me in the beginning, not me. I was just in a weakened state and fell for her. I didn’t know I’d be in the middle of a person with Borderline personality disorder. I wold say she is mentlaly ill, but I love her.😦

As another posted said, is he depressed? This can come in different strengths, people don’t have to want to kill themselves or cry all day to be clinically depressed. It can be lack of energy, low self worth, loss if interest in activities, etc. You can actually look up a simple online checklist about depression and run through it making guesses as to what your husbands answers would be (they are like on a scale of 1-10 or something for each question). …]

God Bless,
Bill
 Bill: This is probably the most compassionate, insightful post about mental illness that I’ve ever read, here or anywhere. I’ve been in a similar boat as AnaTurin’s husband, but my wife is divorcing me. She knew about my depression/ADD but always seemed to pretend that she didn’t understand when my symptoms presented themselves. I think if she had more compassion, I wouldn’t be getting divorced now. When I read of your troubles, Ana, it sounds like my marriage a couple of years ago. This could go to bad places without intervention. My reaction: depression. But like Bill said, do one of those checklists.

I don’t understand.
He doesn’t stay home with my kids, they go to school. (he only watches them like once a month max).

I don’t understand about the sex stuff. No one is being forced or pressured in this relationship, we have sex a lot, and it’s 100% voluntary, though actually it’s usually ME not him that wants it more.

I’m sorry for all that you have been through.

I’m not sure why you said “the more you push him away, the worse it will become”, bc i’m not pushing him away at all. If anything, he is isolating himself from me, but i’m not pushing him away.

I apologize for not understanding. It sounds like you’re in a pickle jar. How old are you guys? My wife and I go through ups and downs. It’s perfectly normal. I’m in the process of applying for disability from military injuries. So my situation is different. But I’m also in school. My wife is also in school. We’re moving towards the same goal: spending more time during summer and holidays. She’s a teacher and I left an engineering job to become a teacher.

Sometimes men can turn out to be duds. Sometimes they need prodding. Age usually has something to do with things. And if he’s holding out for a decent job, I get it. If he bails on his plan now and takes something lower, he’ll get stuck. But I recall financial problems. It’s time to call him out on the floor and put the ducks in a row before swatting them down. made that up myself. Give him a good talking to. Then if he doesn’t snap out of it, get help to intervene. He may need a kick in the rear end. I’m not sure. But whatever you do get therapy for yourself. He needs to understand that you mean business. So if necessary, pack the bags and see where it goes. Seek help from your pastor. If you have a decent one he’ll help as best as he can.

I tried to get my husband to work for 2 years straight and I tried EVERYTHING… 1. patiently waiting 2. understanding-- “oh, you need some time to transition-- etc,” 3. bullying “if you don’t find work this marriage isn’t going to work.” 4. straight-forward no-nonsense: “get a job.”

NOthing worked. I’m not saying your hubby is the same, just, don’t blame yourself. An older man needs to tell your husband to get a job, not you. It does not work. His dad or an authority figure should be driving it home here.

Hope this helps. Lily

Didn’t read 5 pages…anyways if he’s not homeschooling, watching kids, disabled, mentally ill- I’d leave.
Separation works wonders sometimes. This is what I’d do, don’t know if you can. But I’d be gone. Let him pay bills on own. Cut him off, no $$, no treats, no credit cards, no car…

He could just be a bum.

My recommendations:
  1. Daily Mass together.
  2. Daily family prayers.
  3. Do not worry about motivating or changing anyone. Worry only about your side of the street.

Like the replies to this thread. My husband has been out of work for about 4 years. He is educated and is able bodied. He is not Catholic - he is Lutheran but does not practice. I try to get him to pray and believe that God has a plan for him but he just doesn’t listen. I really am at my wit’s end - we have lost everything and I do mean everything. We are surviving on my income but it is touch and go - paycheck to paycheck. I don’t know how much longer I can take it - I have people telling my all of the time that they would have left by now.

His problem is he is depressed and is on medication - he has no motivation at all to get a job. I have talked to him endlessly about it - the head of our local St. Vincent De Paul society is really trying to get him a job as well and is really being encouraging to him. I feel like I have done everything possible - but nothing works.

Now he has “hurt” his back. He did have back surgery about 4 years ago - he was laid off when he was out after his surgery - not because of the surgery - they had massive layoffs at his work. I just feel like he will now use this as another excuse not to look for work.

My husband is my best friend and has been with me through some serious medical issues - I don’t want to abandon him. (We live more like roommates then husband and wife) I have prayed and prayed but don’t know what else to do. I am angry, numb and disheartened. I should say that this is affecting my health as well - the stress has been horrible.

Any suggestions would be great.

It won’t help your husband but it may help your family. Is there a possibility of Social Security Disability for the depression and the back?

Ana,

I also think your husband’s situation is different that that man’s who you quoted. In addtion to your husband possibly being depressed, this is a situation that can make YOU depressed or give you an anxiety condition. It certainly sounds to me like your pretty stressed about it.

Have you done anything so far? Have you talked with him about the situation and your feelings? I also liked the suggestion from another poster who suggested that if your husband is not the one sitting down and doing the finances that this responsibility be passed along to him. He will at least see with his 2 own eyes the reality.

I grew up in a family where my father worked 6-7 days a week. My mother did not work. My fathrer’s mother lived with us. She was a wino (drank 24/7). My mother would go out EVERY WEEKDAY and leave us kids with drunk grandma, and then return home like 1/2 hour before my dad got home from work and pretended like she was home all day. I later learned she was actually buying my grandmother wine as a bribe to ‘watch us’. MY grandmother was very abusive, not sure where my mom was going, but think it was out spending money as she eventually started bribing me to get the mail ‘before your father gets home’ and give me candy for doing so. As I got older I realized this was wrong and refused to do it. She then had my baby sister do it. Turns out she was putting the family in massive debt.

Not saying your husband or homelife is anything like that, but your husband isn’t living up to his responsibilities. Neither am I at the present time. However I take 5 different psychiatric medications and have PTSD and Depression. So at least there is a backstory and it’s not simply “well I’ll wait until I find a job that is willing to pay me what I feel I am worth”.
If he’s depressed, help him get help. If your depressed, get help. I would at least talk to my dr if I were you. Maybe individual counseling for you if he’s unwilling.
But it sounds like your being taken advantage of. And I don’t like it when people are taken advantage of, it hits a nerve with me because of the severe abuse I sufered in childhood. I’m actually shedding a few tears right now thinking about you maybe being taken advantage of. If so, it’s not right. Not saying your husband is a bad guy, just saying…how long are you going to have this situation go on without doing anything?

And I have a job. I used to be homeless (20 years ago). MY work offered to advocate for me to go on long term disability about a year ago b/c they saw I was having a very, very hard time. I actually saw my dr today who wrote a note to give me some time off of work (need to sort some issues out) but I do my best to work despite my major mental illnesses that impact me greatly. Some days I just can’t work. I’ve gotten in trouble for missing too much work. I hurts me to know your a good woman and your husband seems to be getting a free ride off your back. I might wind up on disability some day, but I am going to fight against it. In fact I wish I could work more because we are poor, but my work drains all my energy. When I’m not at work I’m in bed, every night after work and every weekend day and night (with rare exceptions) saving up energy so I can go to work. I hope you address this issue with your husband Ana, you deserve a break and an even shake, or at least to know what’s going on with your husband and to have it addressed if there is something like depression.

I think it’s a total cop out or a guy to now work because of the economy and he can’t get a job close to his former salary…heck…he can probably get a job making twice as much as I do right now, at least. So I don’t feel sorry for him. I feel sorry for YOU.

God Bless,
Bill

yeah. You sound just like me.
We are behind on rent for 2 1/2 months at least. If we get evicted, I’m moving somewhere without him.

Bill,

thanks for your post.

I guess this is an “update”.

Still, no job, although he seems to be trying.

His mother also keeps calling him and yelling at him and crying (because of him not working and she says she doesn’t want me to leave him because of it). He even tells me all about the phone calls and how crazy and “negative” she is being.

Oh, and I’m being “negative” and bringing him down when I bring up our dire situation of being on the verge of eviction (rent is 2 1/2 months behind).

For the past week I have been looking for a night shift job. My plan is to work at night 10-7 or whatever their night shift is. Then come home, get my kids ready for school and on the bus, then go to my classes, do homework in between classes, come home, cook dinner, help my kids with homework, put them to bed, do laundry, take a shower and go to work.

The problem is I won’t be able to sleep except for a few times a week.

Also, I will probably be making minimum wage and it will take me about a week to make what he could make in a day or two.

I shouldn’t complain though because right now, according to him, “all” I have to do is take care of my kids and go to school. That’s ALL! So it should be super easy to work full time in my “free time”.

I don’t understand.

Cut him off until he gets job. That’s how my wife got the basement finished.

Ana,
Sleep is a human necessity. I work full time, take care of housework and kids, do all the cooking, shopping, etc, but I couldn’t do it without sleep. You must be realistic, no one can go nonstop day and night with sleep only “a few times a week.” You might end up taking it out on your kids. Please don’t try to be superhuman.
Bill’s advice is great – praise your husband for every step he makes in the right direction. Consider applying for social security disability for him. First step might be to go with him to talk to his doctor.
Praying for you.

AnaTurin,

It has been horrible. I get where you are coming from. I’ll keep you in my prayers.

Getting counseling from a priest is not an option either. (that’s another story)
Not even from any priest? Have you personally talked to a priest, even without your husband?
hopefully we will soon have healthcare thanks to Obama
Put your trust in real men, like good priests, more so than corrupt politicians; trust God above all.

I have been out of work for 5 of the past 6 weeks and will be out 1-2 more weeks, it’s due to mental illness (severe depression, ptsd, anxiety). I was out for 2 weeks, asked my PCP to write notes for that, I was incapable of working or doing much of anything. I was bedridden due to anxiety and depression. I went back to work for a week and then was out for 2 more weeks, same as first 2. I lost 40 lbs in 2 months due to not being able to eat, due to anxiety and depression (both severe).

I then saw my psychiatrist whe said “your suicidal” and recommended I go to a psych (name removed by moderator)atient unit. I have never been in one before. I went and was in there for 2 weeks. It helped me tremendously. They changed my medications and it was good to have structured, psycho-educational groups and people to socialize with. Upon discharge I went to an outpatient program, I’m going there 3 afternoons a week for the next 1-2 weeks. They have groups, I went one day and was impressed by the quality of the groups.

I say all this because your husband may be depressed or have some other similar condition. Unless you are set financially, or your husband is of retirement age, I see this as not normal and a problem. And it seems to be a problem he doesn’t acknowledge nor is he dealing with it effectively. I see no reason this will change. Every week/month that goes by with him not working willl leave a larger gap in his CV/Resume and his skillset will begin to diminish to a small degree every week as well. I’m sure he’s capable of recovering, but he’s not trying to.

I suggest you talk to him about marriage counseling (the issue is your worried/depressed/whatever because he’s not working or motivated to find a job) . Hopefully the marriage counselor will be able to pick up on depression or whatever is blocking him from working.

God Bless,
Bill

Ok, so I’m back. It’s mid-Feb. 2012. Been married for 1 1/2 years and of that time, my husband has worked for a total of 2 months.

There is no excuse that he has not come up with.

I feel like I don’t even know who this person is, as all he does is sleep, eat, watch tv. He claims he is not depressed, but don’t know how i will ever know that since he refuses to go to counseling (if we even had money for it).

I dont trust him anymore because he has basically been telling me things everyday and promising all kinds of things that he never does. I literally believe only about 10% of what he tells me.

We are in very real danger of being homeless soon, since we owe our landlord $2,000+ in rent. I am debating dropping out of school to work, but I feel like I would rather almost be homeless at this point since I only have 2 months until I graduate, (and this is after returning to school after 10 years) so it just seems horribly stupid to drop out now.

I feel so hopeless. I wish I had known that he was like this before we got married. I feel like he was just putting up a facade before, and now this is the “real” him, but how can I know?

If anyone has any advice, please help me because I am getting really desperate and am scared of doing something drastic.

Are there resources for you at school that might help you with housing, etc. until you get your degree? I’m sure there is a career office or similar that can help you find a job, even if it’s not directly related to your degree at first.

😦 I’m sorry this is so tough!

This is not good, or normal. Finish your education no matter what. Once you’re done, it will be worth it. Tell your husband he has a specific amount of time to get a job. If he doesn’t, leave.
