How to Relate to Transgendered Person?

What does this even mean?
Some people are born with some abnormality in sexual ways. For instance, they have genitals that are partly formed, and even their sexual physiology is not permanently entrenched. There is various treatment for this. Some of these have hormone conflicts, and they display orientations not in coordination with their physical makeups. But these things are known in the medical world and can not be imputed to the person.

Some are perfectly healthy in all sexual respects, but are deliberately triggered through temptation to exploit man’s curiosity to experimentation. This cqn be imputed to the person. Once attempted and gives in, the devil turns the desire mechanisms(delectability) toward this activity. It is a trick and requires the person to seek methods of ridding himself of this orientation.

We know this latter is true, because there is a proven cure for this, devotion to the Holy Rosary.

From what I’ve seen they knew from an extremely early age and they typically spend years or decades wanting it to stop.

When speaking in someone’s presence I refer to them in whatever manner they prefer. To me that is just common courtesy.

When I testify I always make it a point to ask any women who I might mention how they prefer to be referred to-Ms. , Mrs. or Miss. I look upon this in the same way

Just from a quick skim, I found there are a number of theories as to why people suffer from gender dysphoria. By the way, the American Psychological Association still regards transgenderism to be a mental illness.

This is from Wikipedia, so it’s not all that reliable. But the theories include:

1 Psychological and behavioral theories
Code:
1.1 Rearing / Trauma
1.2 Sexuality
2 Biological-based theories
Code:
2.1 Genetics
2.2 Brain structure
2.3 Brain function
2.4 Prenatal androgen exposure
A more scientific take can be found at the National Center for Biotechnology Information. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0002495/

I may sound naive, but I can’t imagine why anyone would choose this condition. In the extreme, it involves surgical mutilation. It would be my wish that these people would receive counseling. Because they suffer from an illness, I think they deserve compassion.

I would like to point out that the APA doesn’t consider gender dysphoria a mental illness. They consider it a mental disorder. The distinction is that a mental disorder is something that interferes with your ability to live your day-to-day life normally (which is why gender dysphoria is a temporary diagnosis; people are no longer diagnosed with gender dysphoria once they are on hormonal treatment and/or have been through surgery and it is no longer interfering with their day-to-day life). A mental illness, on the other hand, is typically considered something that interferes with one’s cognitive processes. This would involve any hallucinatory illness (say, schizophrenia) or deteriorating illness (say, Alzheimer’s), and the like. People who suffer from gender dysphoria suffer no corresponding loss of cognitive function/ability, so it is merely a mental disorder, and a temporary one at that.

Thank you for clearing that up.

Sadly the counseling doesn’t really work.

Does it work with young children? (I think it’s sad when parents of a three-year-old let a child transition.)

Parents don’t, “let” their children transition at 3years old, … these parents, don’t reject obvious behaviour and manner to a point where emotional damage is done, kids don’t gauge and govern their manner to “sociable acceptable norms”, they simply are who they are. These kids accepted, will ultimately get it right!

I may have used the wrong terminology. Parents or other adults might encourage behavior.

I spent a lot of time with my niece and nephew. When my nephew was 3 to 4 (before his sister was born), he liked to put on his mother’s high heels, sing and dance, and just generally be effeminate. Per his mother’s instructions, I never made his behavior taboo. I laughed along. But then again, I didn’t buy him child-size high-heels. I didn’t introduce him to nail polish. I didn’t buy him dresses. I didn’t buy him wigs.

Importantly, he never asked to be called a girl’s name.

By the time he went to school, he picked up all the masculine cues and that was that. He was “normal” – whatever that means.

He’s now in his late 20s. He’s very tight-lipped about his private life. He’s 6-5 and has a long beard. He’s a musician and I hope and pray he’s happy.

I may be alone with this opinion here, but I believe being transgender is not a sin or even a problem.

I have spoken with three priests from different parts of the world, all of whom have said that the church has not taken a stand on this. There are a few posters here who are of the same opinion, even the AMA has a similar view, so are the majority of the psychologists and psychiatrists.

you are not alone. but your charitable views are much appreciated.

I don’t believe God made a mistake, because God doesn’t make mistakes. He simply gave them a challenge. An obstacle to overcome. He made them the wrong gender on purpose.

This implies a certain cruelty on God’s part I cannot accept. Being born as the “wrong gender,” as many trans* folks are, is uncomfortable at best and torturous at first. Look up gender dysphoria, a legitimate psychological issue that causes unimaginable suffering. Certainly it is no “challenge,” but a lifetime of struggle, at great financial cost, I might add.

To the OP, I suggest you treat this classmate like you would any other male. Your opinions on his gender are unnecessary in a school environment and would likely only cause embarrassment to the student. Whatever your personal convictions, putting a classmate in a humiliating and uncomfortable situation probably in front of his peers is not charitable.
