You do know that this is just a hypothetical, right? Obviously the President doesn’t, and won’t have absolute power

The day a zealot of any stripe attempts to force their religious views upon me is the day I gleefully participate in the violent overthrow of my government.

We have an institutional separation of church and state. A politician that can’t respect that is unqualified for the job.

But does being unqualified for the job matter so much anymore? Otherwise, I agree with you except the overthrow of the government might be done peacefully according to Gandhian tradition.

i am not 100% comfortable w/ the term “devoutful”

where i president’ i’d’ve been looking to appoint SCOTUS who pledge they’d’ve overturned R v W

not 100% sure about JFK’s catholic credentials

rumors about him & marilyn monroe

i don’t know

Having the Pope celebrate the Inaugural Mass and anoint the President would be controversial… Having a Eucharistic Procession and Installation at The White House would be even more controversial…

Flying the Vatican flag opposite the US flag, now that would be the last straw! 🇺🇸 :vatican_city:

One thing I would hope for is someone who can explain the morality of issues. Let discuss when life begins. Have a commission study and discuss the report. Etc.

He should handle in the example of Jesus. His decisions should be informed by his faith and the teachings of the church.

Jefferson pasted together his own Bible. I don’t care for him or Franklin…

Yes it is. It’s literally the first amendment of the US constitution.

If you are talking about the establishment clause, it speaks about the government not establishing an official state religion and the people have the right to practice as they wish. Its a common misconception by those who want to silence the voice of religion in the public square IMO. You might want to read it. 😮

Exactly. There’s no established religion; however, the President is totally within his right to make decisions based on his informed Catholic conscience.

A person can be a moral, practicing Catholic in the White House. No POTUS has absolute power. We have three branches of government designed so that no one branch has absolute power. That is the Constitution of the United States.

Even if the POTUS were a King, their practicing Catholicism does not mean a “Theocracy”. The children of Israel had a theocracy. They rebeled against it and wanted a king instead.

The closest we have today is the Vatican, and that is the very model of peace!

It would be nearly impossible to remain a “devout” Catholic.

A terrorist is on the move in Iraq. U.S. intelligence has his exact location. The U.S. Air Force launches a drone armed with a missile. The operator requests approval to fire the missile. It goes up the chain of command to the Oval Office. And . . . .?

Catechism 2308 All citizens and all governments are obliged to work for the avoidance of war.
However, "as long as the danger of war persists and there is no international authority with the necessary competence and power, governments cannot be denied the right of lawful self-defense, once all peace efforts have failed."

This is the tip of the very comprehensive teaching of the Church wrt war and the duties of government.
