How do I argue against what this man stood for with my friends (and some of them are female) who are mourning his passing?

" Argue against " ?

When I think of the sexual revolution , generally, I’m reminded of a film clip I saw once ; Joseph Stalin got up before the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet, cleared his throat , said a few forgettable words, and the entire hall erupted into thunderous applause.

Thunderous applause , except the hysterical desperation was palpable.

You don’t detect the hysterical desperation in the sexual revolution ?

Perhaps you give popularity and power —fickle, transient, ephemeral — popularity and power , too much credit ?

Hugh Hefner was , even many years before he died , as archaic as a suit of plate armor , or a rickshaw.

You might say that you feel sorry for him.

And that might cut to the quick more than any criticism.

…I thought he had died long ago.

As to arguing against him, Kesa82 is right. Just say you’re sorry for him.

I don’t think arguing with people who are mourning will be effective. I find his life tragic but I don’t think that I’m going to get into that with someone who thinks enough of a stranger to mourn a him.

Oh i said some Divine Mercy prayers for him, but I’m talking about people who are praising him. I think he has done more harm than good. Don’t attack me for wanting to find a way to explain the harm this person has ultimately caused

Rest in Peace.
Seeing your first playboy was a right of passage for millions of teenage boys in the 70s 80s and 90s. Not condoning it but just being honest.

Who’s attacking? And do you really need to “explain”? You’re unlikely to change anyone’s mind, and it’s pretty common knowledge that not everybody thinks sexual freedom, nude centerfolds, Playboy clubs etc are good or moral things. It’s not a deep issue needing big explanations. You could simply say, “Eh, I wasn’t a fan of all that sex stuff. I think it’s immoral and exploitative. But may God have mercy on him and may he Rest In Peace anyway.” End of discussion.

Just pray for him doesn’t seem enough in today’s society, and maybe i have adopted your laissez faire attitude for too long? Yep Jaime5! what’s your point? “…don’t speak ill of the dead…”? I thought this was a Catholic website? Confused

Most Catholics I know do not speak ill of the dead. Unless the person was Hitler or equivalent, it’s considered impolite. What are you confused about?

There’s a lot of liberal feminists who wouldn’t like that notion, especially those who tie pornography to sexual violence.

I never said anyone was attacking, but if they did it would be obvious, non? I see this as an opportunity to discuss the dangers of pornography. Do you realize how many boys/men/ women within the Church are struggling with this issue and how it affects their marriages/relationships?

That is a silly comment in my opinion… In your case, I think i will not talk ill of the living and instead pray for you!!!

I think this whole thread is a bit silly because if this is an important issue that you think needs to be discussed, you are likely talking about it regularly anyway and not waiting for an elderly man to pass away to provide you an opportunity. Prayers are always helpful. Good luck on your endeavor.

Rest in Peace.

Oh, right! That makes it ok… are you serious? Or are you joking?

well that is one argument. What about abortion… there is more violence (emotional, mental) violence that is tied to porn. But try and find that on google lol. I wonder what Mary and St Joseph would think about it?

Short term — Bad news . most significant change will occur after everyone reading this thread has relocated to the graveyard.

Long term — As with Nazism , Communism , or Atheism , for example, pornography is its own worst argument.

For example , ( it has to be one example, it is way past my bed time , ) pornography EVENTUALLY teaches you that the United States HAS TO point out that Kim Jung Un has a stable of — literally —sex slaves .

How come , " has to " ??

Because the United States, which supposedly cares so much about , for example , children, produces 500,000 times as much porn for the the under- age consumer than does North Korea. 😃

That has to be glossed over , and that’s a pretty big pile of *&%@ to gloss over . 😉

Granted, that’s not at all a convenient sort of education to receive if you worship the state as God , like the North Koreans do . But, presumably that is not us, so it’s win-win , long term.

Edit ;
But what about all those souls that might be lost to Hell in the short term ?

I don’t know that any souls are lost to Hell in the short term.
obviously God’s actions tend to be rather glacial , and presumably his motives and judgement are good.

— And if they were not good , we would be in a really bad spot anyway , regardless , hopeless.
