This is a gas! If they get rights no doubt the first thing the U.S. Government will do is raise taxes so we can establish an “Apes Rights Commission”. No doubt both politcal parties will court them for their vote…I wonder, will they be conservatives or democrats? Will they be eligible for medicare?

This could be big!

Consider that the “Apes Rights Commission” could meet in Switzerland in winter with alternate meeting sites in … St. Croix. And then … in summer … maybe somewhere along the Carolina shore, departing before hurricane season, of course.

It should also have access to Nancy Pelosi’s Boeing 757 … for … “fact finding trips.”

Maybe the government can establish a national holiday for apes. It’s another day off.😃
I just had another thought: What will this do to the social security fund?

And to be politically correct, they should practice Affirmative Action and have apes for pilots and co-pilots.😛

I remember a while back where someone proposed legislation in which horses would get one day off per week.
The question is where does this stop. Today special rights for apes, then who or what tomorrow?

To quote John Lyons, the most respected horse trainer in the United States, “The average horse in this country is over-fed and under-worked.” And that’s true.

And as I asked earlier, "Should a butterfly have the same rights as a bullfrog? Is it wrong for someone with amoebic dysentery to take medicine that will kill the amoebas? Is it immoral to put out rat traps, kill mosquitos, or put down “roach motels?”

this is an internet forum… who reads context?? Misinterpreting and jumping to conclusions haphazardly is half the fun of these things!! 😃
Yeah, fair point 🙂 . We should probably all relax a bit rather than spend too much time trying to point out complicated problems with each other’s posts.

Al,

Take care else you be accused of discrimination. Apes should not be forced to fly to Europe to meet. I would lobby for the United Nations to make room for them because they have a lot in common. It would probably require name badges so you could tell who’s who.

Doesn’t it say in the bible that the horse should get his day off? 😉

But on the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: thou shalt do no work on it, thou nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy beast, nor the stranger that is within thy gates (Ex 20:10)

Nonsense. Genesis records the fact that God gave man dominion over the rest of creation. Hence, human rights for animals, including apes is simply unthinkable, because for one thing, eating Pork or Beef would now be tantamount to cannibalism.

I agree that being mean to animals is harmful to the human soul however, I also think that to harm an animal is a “sin”(?) against the animal, because the animal does have a soul, even if not an immortal one. Also an animal, too, is a creature of god.

I disagree that one can sin against an animal. Do I sin against a pig for eating pork? I however do agree that animals need to be treated humanely. But definitely not on the same level as human rights.

Arguably, there would be a need for specially qualified individuals to “assist” the Apes in managing their financial affairs. For a fee, of course!

I didn’t know looking in a mirror ever had such significance:

But there is a stronger cognitive argument, he says, because the apes’ intelligence and ability to reason demands our respect.

“Show a gibbon a mirror and the reaction suggests he or she thinks the reflection is another gibbon. But all the great apes have passed the ‘mirror self-recognition’ test and soon begin checking their teeth or examining parts of their body they couldn’t see without the mirror. This self-awareness surely suggests that they know they exist.”

Does anyone else hear the theme music to “The Twilight Zone” :doh2:
