I understand the Church’s position, you are still considered married and must obtain an annulment before remarriage.
But you are not considered living in sin if you separate and obtain a civil divorce, only if you try to marry again without an annulment.
I don’t agree with the Church on this issue, to me they are clearly mistaken regarding the scripture, Christ clearly made an exception for immoral acts (adultery) but I am obliged to follow it so long as I am Catholic.
I would leave my spouse and try for an annulment in the case of adultery.
