HV, sex and hell

Could you elaborate?

The goal of contraception isn’t to avoid pregnancy, its to avoid abstinence.
Why would God make sex feel so good if we were only supposed to use sex to procreate? If he is responsible for making it feel so good, then it is only logical that we are supposed to enjoy it.

I enjoy sex with my wife and our goal for using contraception is to avoid pregnancy. We don’t want kids yet and will be better prepared to raise kids when we are older.

The world would be better without it.
The world would be a lot worse off because you would have so many babies born to parents that aren’t ready to properly care for them.

Additionally, as a species, we aren’t near extinction so it’s not like we have a need to produce an abundance of offspring. On the contrary, many places are experiencing overpopulation. More people contributes to more use of limited resources, more emissions, more global warming, etc. which causes a harmful effect on the beautiful world that God created. One could argue that contraception reduces global warming.

then it is only logical that we are supposed to enjoy it.

This is the prevailing attitude in our culture, however, this attitude directly contradicts Christian (not just Catholic) teaching until 1930.

My signature links to a good article about Christianity and contraception.

Della,

This is off topic of the OP, but I believe there is greater unity of faith and doctrine amongst conservative evangelicals than RCs.

Amongst the various denominations we all hold to the essentials that we believe are necessary for salvation. RCs do not.

Conservative Evangelicals disagree on many essential things, such as the need for baptism or the meaning of holy communion, and other such things. They do not speak with a united voice in their teachings.

The Catholic Church teaches with a united voice through the pronouncements of the Magisterium (the pope united with the all the bishops).

Once again, dissenters and heretics do not invalid the teachings of the Church. They only point up the fact that there is a united teaching which they will not accept.

No two Protestant denominations can claim to have all the same teachings all the time, but the Catholic Church can and does because it always has and always will.

Interesting article.

As late as 1923, the Lutheran Church/Missouri Synod’s official magazine The Witness accused the Birth Control Federation of America of spattering “this country with slime” and labeled birth-control advocate Margaret Sanger a “she devil.” Pastor Walter Maier, founding preacher of the long-running Lutheran Hour radio program, called contraceptives “the most repugnant of modern aberrations, representing a twentieth-century renewal of pagan bankruptcy.”Out of all the doctrines on which there was disagreement, protestantism maintained unity with Catholicism in disapproving contraception, from the reformation until 1930.

I cannot understand how a loving God can create so many people who, it seems, will end up being punished for all eternity.
Before Christ came, everyone went to Hell - no exceptions.

Now, by His grace, there are some who may go to Heaven. Human beings were never created to go to Heaven, originally - we were created without death at all. We were originally supposed to live on the earth forever.

After Adam’s sin, everyone (after living) died and went to Hell.

Now, most people still die and go to Hell, but there are some who receive the unmerited and undeserved privilege of going to Heaven, because their love for God is exemplary, and because they have received Christ’s forgiveness for their sins.

Jesus Himself warned us that the gate is narrow and the way is difficult.

At the present time, especially sinvce HV and Vat II, no two Catholics agree in their beliefs, our views are nuanced and this makes this forum so interesting and illuminating.

This is to the advantage of all of us, as it makes one think carefully to see where we stand…

I am trying to resolve all the related issues being discussed here by reading Hans Urs von Balthasar.

He wrote about ‘a blind act of faithful obediernce’ and ‘[t]he individual must allow himself to be led “whither he would not”’.

One thinks of the clay not being able to tell the potter what to do.

No two Protestant sets of official doctrines agree on these subjects, but there is only one set of Catholic official doctrines - those who disagree with them are out of full communion with the Church; these folks aren’t being obedient to another set of Catholic official doctrines somewhere, as Protestants typically are being obedient to a different set of Protestant doctrines - rather, they are rebelling.

I disagree.

The old version of the Creed had that after His death Jesus descended into hell, the new version has he descended to the dead.

In school we were taught that Jesus after His death descended to where the souls of good people were to lead them to heaven as they had been redeemed.

Prior to the death of Christ good peopel were in “Abraham’s bosom” as the Gospel of Luke tell us in the parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man (Lk 16:22-23).

Evangelicals disagree on things you and RC’s think are essential. We agree on what we believe to be essential.

You can stick your head in the sand all you want. I don’t really think that the fact that every survey has shown that a majority of western RC’s reject the official teaching on contraception is really disputable. I will leave you to prove otherwise beyond *ad hominem *attacks on sources.

Your post is an excellent example of the dangers of this cultures present fixation on this absurd environmentalism.

Then just don’t have sex when she is furtile. It only lasts a little less than a week per month. You then wouldn’t have to pump her full of unnatural hormones or wear uncomfortable latex that really ruins it anyway.

OT saints were saved by Christ. Anyone who makes it to heaven is there because of Christ.

1 Peter1:20He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.

Jesus Christ stands at the apex of history. Just as we look back in history to Christ’s sacrifice for our sins on the cross, Old Testament believers looked forward to His sacrifice for them.

No two Catholics have EVER been totally on the same page 100% of the time–EVER. Disagreeing about things that are not yet declared is just fine. Disagreeing about dogma and doctrines that have been declared is not. Big difference. Those who will not accept declared doctrines/dogmas are either formal or material heretics and/or dissenters. It is the Magisterium that decides matters of faith and morals not individual Catholics.

Besides, you can’t have dissenters and heretics between two or three or four sects who don’t teach the same thing. There is a big difference between what individuals choose to believe and what each of their sects teaches, just as there is between each and every Catholic and what the Church formally teachings. Do you see it now?

We do not offer “blind obedience” as you seem to be expounding it. Picking phrases out of context tells us very little about the fullness of von Balthasar’s thought. Don’t do him and yourself an injustice by singling out phrases. It’s not fair to him, to you, or to the Catholic faith or anyone else’s faith, for that matter. Anyone can take a phrase out of context to support anything–it just doesn’t make for good argument for anything.

If we thought about contraception for a moment, would you not conclude that it provides great benefit to society?
No. What it provides is the ability to perceive sex as a sport with no openness to life and no need for love. Sex as a sport is not a benefit to society. Stable families and children within marriage is the best benefit for society.

Why would God make sex feel so good if we were only supposed to use sex to procreate? If he is responsible for making it feel so good, then it is only logical that we are supposed to enjoy it.

Had to answer this one. If GOD had made sex repulsive and miserable we would not have gone and and multiplied. Yes we are to enjoy it and the Catholic Church says so. In a sacramental marriage it is blessed and not to be refused as it is a gift to one another.

…perceive sex as a sport with no openness to life and no need for love
My wife and I do not perceive sex as a sport. We do it to express our love for each other and to also enjoy it. We very much value life and will have children when we are ready.
Stable families and children within marriage is the best benefit for society.
Which is exactly why contraception is such a great benefit to society, because it helps to make sure children are born to stable families within marraige. If it wasn’t for contraception, you would have a lot more babies being born to unstable families and out of wedlock.

I pray that you don’t find yourselves in the situation many other couples have. When some that have been on these wonderful contraceptives for a long time and then wanted children they were unable to conceive for some unknown reason.

The availability of contraception is one main thing responsible for the out of wedlock baby boom. Families based on contraceptive sexual activity is another way to make family optional.

Do you have any evidence to support this? Something tells me there would be more pregnancies if they weren’t using birth control.

Why do most Catholics in the west reject Humanae Vitae?
[bolded by me.] That phrase is the operative phrase of your question. Catholics “in the west” reject it. Most Catholics worldwide do not. What we as Catholics must guard against is an infection of western thinking to the rest of the world.
Are most of these living in sin?
We don’t know, nor should we know. That is God’s job. We can only know what is shared with us. That is why all discussions about contraception (or any other topic for that matter) must begin in love and friendship.
My permanent problem is that most Catholics appear to be heading for hell, either through non-attendance at Sunday Mass or by rejecting the Church’s teaching on sex.
Again an operative word, appear. Ten years ago I “appeared” to be headed straight for hell too. It was only by the grace of God that I did not die in my unrepentant state.
I cannot understand how a loving God can create so many people who, it seems, will end up being punished for all eternity.
Because we are looking only from our finite point of view, it can appear hopeless. It isn’t. God is bigger than that. Spend your time speading the gospel, it is called the “Good news” after all!

Overcoming contraception in all of society is my pet project. But I have to begin with those closest to me and work my way out. If I work on one person then that is one more person who has the Truth about contraception.

God didn’t create them to go to hell. God creates because He is objectively procreative. He is ordered towards life.
