Lord of all Hopefulness, such a wholesome hymn. Got to love the Irish!

I use that one quite a bit and occasionally, Be Thou My Vision. I love that melody. Speaking of the Irish,

Christ Be Beside Me.
Sing of Mary

I really love the song “Come Unto Me” by Bob Hurd. I’m not a big fan of his music, but I love this one.
Refrain: Come, come unto me; I will make you
you a jewel. Precious and rare; the glory
you’ll bear in the crown of God.
  1. There are deeds you alone must do; there
are words only you can say. Trust in me, and do
not tremble, for I go with you to show you the way.
  1. From the dawn of creation, from the
tree on Calvary, I chose you and gave my life
to be my own, to be my delight.

I have to second this. This is one of my favorite hymns! Is it Catholic?
The tune is “Thaxted” (Gustav Holtz, from his composition “The Planets”, “Jupiter”) and the lyricist for “O God Beyond all Praising” is Michael Perry. . .I believe both (early 20th century) were Anglicans but I’m not 100% sure.

When I lived in Virginia it was often sung in the Catholic Churches there. I have not (yet) heard it here in Vermont but maybe one of these days I’ll convince somebody to let me play it.

Thank you! If it’s not Catholic, it should be. 🙂

On Eagles Wings does it for me too.It was sung at my Dad’s funeral, nearly 18 yrs. ago.Since then ,whenever I hear it, I become overwhelmed with emotion… Also,I love any song dedicated to our Blessed Mother:) Jeanne

“Holy, Holy, Holy;” “Tantum Ergo;” “Lord, who at that first Eucharist did pray,” "Salve Regina (even loved the jazzed-up version in “Sister Act,” and my Lutheran husband was wondering why my eyes were tearing up when we watched it on TV.)

As far as Christmas songs are concerned, it isn’t Midnight Mass unless I can belt out “Adeste Fideles,” and “Hark! the herald angels Sing,” even though I have a voice like an angry convention of bees!

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty… Top favorite

Amazing Grace… Classic lol

Lots of what are on this list…

…but specifically, a well-sung “Where you there” has to be among the most moving hymns.

Great hymns guys. I looked up a few of them and found many of them to be touching. I like “Where Charity and Love Prevail” and its Latin version a lot after hearing some renditions of it.

A couple more, which were sung at the funerals of relatives:

“For All the Saints”

“Eternal Father Strong to Save” (a young cousin was killed in Afghanistan.) I truly loved the last stanza of that hymn: “O Trinity of love and power, thy people spare in danger’s hour
From rock and tempest, fire and foe, be with them wheresoe’er they go
And ever more shall rise to Thee glad praise from space, air, land, and sea.”

Not for usual worship, but at Mass at St. Patrick’s in New York, the Sunday after 9/11/01, for the recessional we sang “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” I know, I know. Vengeful, nationalistic, and militaristic. But I think we New Yorkers needed to sing something like that that particular weekend. And as I was droning along, I was struck by the amount of religious imagery in the lyrics, all of the stanzas. I still can’t hear that song without tearing up.

Amazing Grace is always one of the most heart wrenching songs I have ever heard played at a funeral. Every time we sing it at church, I start to well up and have to hold in the tears. I believe it is even more beautiful played on the bagpipes.

Peace! :gopray:

I cant’ wait for Advent, so we can sing “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” again.

Sorry, that will always be the "Brady Bunch’ hymn for me

Here I am Lord, Is it I Lord, Who was bringing up three very lovely girls… :p;)
Saying sorry at the beginning of a post does not excuse the insult.

**The following is not directed at you, but at whoever came up with that comparison in the first place (yes, I realize that person isn’t likely here on this forum reading that): **

I don’t know where that ludicrous comparison came from, but it’s horrendously offensive to MANY people. The only thing the two songs have in common is that “Here I am Lord” has the same number of syllables as “Here’s a story”. Beyond that, the meter, rhythm, beat, and even the number of syllables don’t even begin to line up.

My only conclusion is that whoever invented this comparison was out to offend because they simply didn’t like the song and they didn’t know that making this comparison exposes glaring defficiencies in their knowledge of music.

Now back to Brendan: I would leave this terrible comparison in the dust where it belongs.

Gather Us In…
Add to these:
  1. Here I am Lord (already mentioned)
  2. Will you come and follow me? (aka The Summons)
  3. The Servant Song
  4. Make me a channel of your peace (aka the prayer of St Francis)
