Hymns that touch you

When I hear “On Eagles Wings”, I think of “Why Catholics Can’t Sing” book. Personally agree with the author’s sentiments.

My favorite is “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.” Solid, meaningful, and pre-60’s hymn.

I love this song with every fibre of my being… the only problem is that I can’t sing it. Not that I can’t sing, I just can’t steady my emotions enough to sing it properly, especially and in particular the line “all things are mine since I am His” which I don’t think has ever made it out of my mouth without it making me cry…

I am silly aren’t I?

And then there’s ‘Lead Kindly Light’… by, of course, Blessed John Henry Newman.

A “kindly light”… again with the welling up… 🙂

I left out Amazing Grace because that one will forever be associated in my mind with my grandma’s funeral and the times standing in formation on a flightline in Afghanistan to honor a wooden box draped in a flag on its way home… touching, yes, but not in the terms that I think the OP meant… 😦

I will, however, have to check out “When You Came to the Seashore”

Someone mentioned “Shepherd me o God”, and I want to add that to my list retroactively! 👍

Also, I’m just going to add one line from a hymn (Pan de Vida): Poder es servir, porque Dios es Amor (which has several meanings, but I like the translation as “Power is service, because God is love”)

I come from a family of cops & fireman, I know what you mean about Amazing Grace, but is still one of my favorites.
BTW- a big thank you & hug from a grateful American for your service to our country!! 😃
 
I know technically this isnt a “song” but when the Lord’s Prayer is sung in Aramaic it gives me goosebumps:)
 
I forgot “How Can I Keep from Singing” as someone else mentioned. I love that hymn, but I know a lot of people who don’t.
 
The “old” Mass of Creation setting.
I grew up with it. It brings back alot of memories!

Also, singing the Lord’s Prayer to the tune of “It is the Evening of the Day” by the Rolling Stones. A college favorite of mine!

Right on! “Be Thou My Vision” is the other beautiful text that works so well with “Slane”. There is something so honest about a good folk melody and those of Irish, Scottish and English origin resonate the most with me.

In regard to melodies by Haas, Joncas, Haugen, etc. I get emotional alright. I get the urge to want to throw or kick something.

Couldn’t believe that I didn’t see Nearer my God to Thee, then got to the last post and saw it 🙂

Seriously, can’t listen to that without welling up. It’s so beautiful.

Also Amazing Grace (such a wonderful timeless song, too bad we can’t “claim” that one :p), Eternal Father, Strong to Save is wonderful as well.

And for a more modern one, “Revelation Song” usually makes me cry. It’s so powerful. Also “Alive Again” by Matt Maher.
