Yes, the Franck is beautiful as well as a few of the settings of the Ave Maria. I think the Ave Maria you are talking about is the Schubert setting? I love it with violin and organ accompanying the voice as well.

I love these other settings of the “Ave Maria”. None of these, including the above are for congregational singing, but still inspiring for me none-the-less.

Though I don’t know if it would be considered a hymn, I’m trying to learn how to play the Salve Regina chant on guitar (simple tone) 🙂
 
*Almost Persuaded * brings tears to my eyes because of the unsaved people that don’t turn to Jesus.
 
Cry of the poor - especially when it’s sung quietly and in harmony. It’s so pleading; you can almost actually hear the cry of the poor… I cry like a baby every time.
 
There is a beautiful Catholic Hymn sung usually during Lent that I really love. O Lord We Believe

Not sure how many Catholic’s have heard it. Personally I think the arrangement is appropriate even during Ordinary Time.

My family used this Hymn as one of our music choices for my beloved father’s funeral Requiem Mass on Christmas Eve morning a little over 4 years ago.
 
“Here I am Lord” and “Be not afraid” both bring tears to my eyes almost every time, and I also love “Christ be our light” and “Lord of all hopefulness”.
And the melody of “Sent forth by God’s blessing” has me virtually skipping on my way out of church. I belt out the lyrics with more enthusiasm than any other hymn, just because it’s such a catchy and upbeat song. There is another hymn with that same melody, but the name of it escapes me at the moment.
 
The only time I saw someone cry while singing in church was while we were singing, HOW GREAT THOU ART. My eyes were quite moist then, too. How can anyone not weep when hearing, "And when I think, that God His Son not sparing, sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in. That from the cross, my burdens gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sins. Then sings my soul…"etc. If the organist is playing with feeling, then it’s impossible not to be moved. The irony is that my present pastor does not allow us to sing this song in church. It’s not Catholic, he believes. Very small-minded indeed.

That’s a shame. Many great hymns come from many denominations that we use during Mass. We just sang “How Great Thou Art” this past Sunday as a Communion hymn, and it was so beautiful. The organist at my church always plays it with feeling and gets everyone singing. We usually use it as a Communion hymn quite often.

I’ve requested that it be sung at my funeral. The pastor did allow it at my sister’s funeral. It was her favorite, too.
 
“Only A Shadow” - this is quite possibly the most beautiful hymn ever.

I love those written by Fr. Faber in the 19th century. With great hymns in English like this, who needs um… well, those other more recent songs that I won’t mention?

This is not specific to one hymn that touches you, rather all the music during mass. I’ve searched hi and lo to try and find “mass music” sung just like in my American church. You know like “Holy! Holy! Holy!”, not someones interpretation or spin on it. Can anyone help direct me to a location or artist? Thanks in advance!

You bring up a good point. Perhaps it’s not a matter of WHAT hymns are played but HOW they are played. Organ, during Mass, with descants, etc.

I’ve even heard a version of “Amazing Grace” that I like. Does this mean the hymn touches me? I wouldn’t say that at all.
 
I have just been reminded of a lovely array of Lenten hymns, some of which we are singing this Sunday:

They are also lovely for singing at Divine Office.

That is true. Sometimes, it’s the text that moves me, although the music does help a lot. Other times it is the actual musician who will move me by their rendering of the piece, whether an instrumentalist playing solo, the choir or the cantor singing/chanting the psalm, etc. I’ve heard works which I normally don’t like played/sung so beautifully and meaningfully that it touched me and brought me to tears. I’ve also heard gorgeous works be completely butchered by a bad choir or a poor instrumentalist or just by someone who might be talented in one way and decided to put his/her spin on something traditionally played/sung in another style.
