I just got a few new boards from www.chess.ca and I am hoping to create a tournament among the (admittedly few) interested people around here. Perhaps a big juicy prize will get more participation…I haven’t thought of one I can afford on a modest income which would have tremendous appeal. Any ideas? I think the young are easier targets, as most adults can get their own prizes…The modest sum I can contribute would have more appeal among the unemployed, I guess…:o

EDIT - item in red
Well…The last time I played chess, I got my butt kicked by someone many years my junior…

Computers and I don’t get along too well. I learn enough about them to carry out my job and surf, but you won’t find me reading a computer magazine…

The last time I went fishing, the only fish I caught was about the size of a minnow. One of the only other times I fished, I accidentally threw the rod (my brother’s brand new one) out into the river when casting a little too exuberantly. I had to wade in up to my neck to retrieve it with my toes…

…Wanna talk about God, the Bible, and how you’re feeling?

My 14 year old has decided he is now atheist:( I know he is searching and confused (welcome to the teen years). Because I ONCE was an atheist, I am aware of all the “logic” he tries to use in support of this. When I point out how ILL-logical being an atheist is, he just says that being a Christian is too hard and not believing in easier and more fun:eek:

like me, there will come a time when the emptiness of being an atheist will be overwhelming, and that is when he will return to the fold of God’s love and mercy.

Being an atheist is indeed easy, no going to Church, no praying, etc…but there will come a time when all that “Easy” will feel empty. Just believing that when we die that is IT seems so dark, empty of hope. I know, I was once there.

I pray for my son and for all atheist who are lost, even though they may not feel lost at the moment.

The Joy and Peace of soul in believing and knowing our Lord far outweighs the nothingless of atheism. Its OTHERWORLDLY:thumbsup:

I was hoping, when I joined this forum, that I would be exposed to a higher degree of grace and understanding that would truly increase my tolerance of highly religious people. It is unfortunate however that this has not been found. I was raised Catholic and am very honored to say that today I am an atheist. Trust me, there is nothing "easier" about being an atheist, and pardon me if I am not in awe of the one hour and several minutes some devote to their faith each week. Perhaps if you were to step down, even just slightly, from your pedestal of righteousness you could explore your child's thoughts with an open mind. I find it hard to believe that this child is incapable of enlightening his parent in some way if he were afforded the chance. They may very well be misguided, and may one day find your God, but perhaps his thoughts shouldn’t be dismissed out of hand. I find more beauty in this world than I could hope to contain within myself. I feel that each day the beauty around me and the simple existence of our human experience is far more precious than i could begin to describe on this forum. There is no "emptiness" in my life, and to claim that you know what constitutes my life better than I. . . That is simply absurd. I experience this life with all the joy and appreciation that you do,. Your beliefs are of the utmost importance and quite admirable, it is however folly to the utmost to condemn someone's life to "emptiness" simply because they lack your specific beliefs. Oh, and death brings an end and thereby makes this life temporal, true. But with out it, this life would cease to exist with the immense joy and splendor they way I know it. . . It would simply carry on with out end. Death prevents that, and we should be so lucky to experience such a worthy end to such a fortunate existence. Nothing dark and empty about, but perhaps with your eyes closed it my seem so.

Seems your comments are more condescending than any made by us poor misled deist. I find great beauty in this life that God has so generously gave us. Looking at the vastness and complexity of the universe, I can not help but mavel at the greatness that God and wonders that God created. To think that it all came about randomly is totally illogical, at least to me.

IF you somehow think that believing in a God makes us any less atuned to the wonders of life, then you are the one who is sadly mistaken. God adds joy and meaning to life not less. I’ve never heard anyone say they are less happy and find like more meanless since they came to believe, BUT to the contrary, we almost always hear folks proclaim that believing in God made their lives more fulfilling and more meaningful.

Just because we may sometimes deny ourselves worldly pleasures does not mean than we do not appreciate them. Try fasting and you will appreciate food all the more when you miss a meal or two,

Think about it, and I pray God show you the light as I hope and pray He does for everyone who wonder in the darkness.

We can go back to the bible…or I can take you fishing. I don’t mind if you are a little unskilled…

Since there is no evidence of a god (which one do you mean?) I will focus on the ‘given’ part. He didn’t give it to you, he conditionally loaned it to you. You don’t get to keep it.
To think that it all came about randomly is totally illogical, at least to me.
I don’t know anyone who thinks it is all random. How do you logically justify your belief in your god (by the way, which god do you mean?)

Hmmm…I think “unskilled” may be a bit of an understatement…

Thank you for the offer. Perhaps I will come along, and bring my Bible with me. Then I can read while you fish…

Maybe you guys can live in a whale for a while, then you’ll both get something out of it 🙂

There are three false assumptions here:
  1. The idea that there is no afterlife is a hopeless, dark idea.
  2. Atheism is “nothingness” and “empty of hope.”
  3. Christian belief means joy and “peace of soul.”
I challenge point three, first of all. Christian belief for many people is quite the opposite of joy. (Gay Christians come to mind. Their plight is something that isn’t understood unless you’ve actually been there.)

Also, it completely ignores the value of truth. It might feel better to make yourself believe that a circle is a square, but it doesn’t mean the circle really isn’t a square.

Furthermore, it ignores the loving, joyful humanism that many intelligent atheists subscribe to. There are many consequences of the idea that there is no afterlife, the most important of which is the idea that human life is unbelievably valuable. Wars become atrocities, no matter how “just” they seem. A lack of good health care for all human beings becomes absolutely inhumane. The fact that a third of the world lives in poverty becomes completely intolerable. The secular humanist and the Church have much in common.

fletch! you’re killing me! faith is simple: belief in something for which there is no evidence whatsoever. it’s a form of desperate or wishful thinking. you should know that. shame on you.

miracles can be explained and if not then do some work. it’s easy to throw one’s hands up and say it’s a magic old man in the sky who did it but it’s hard to go about researching and THINKING for one’s self to arrive at a plausible explanation. teenage girls are allowed to swoon and get all fuzzy when they dreamily credit a magic unicorn with all the beautiful things in their life. but independent thinking adults are expected to do the work not break down and start mouthing iron age superstitions to explain natural events!

please! Lourdes? have you ever asked why a definitive cure has never come from that glorified hot tub? why has an amputee never been cured?
Well it seems like you are asking me to put into Words Faith, which is something that i have yet been able to find the words for.

But there are miracles, things science cant explain
Such as Our Lady of Lourdes, and the Sun Dancing at Fatima. The Shroud of Turin is another Example

I’m really, reallllly starting to wonder if this question is one of the top 10 in the toolbox that all atheist apologists are required to ask theists with great gusto, 100% confident that it is the best trump card in the world.

it’s a good one isn’t it? dawkins i think. or maybe hitchens.

well? surely you can explain it to me. you know most atheists would love nothing more than to know something else exists. but unless you’re willing to believe the mythology of desert hunter-gatherers, there is unfortunately no evidence.

I think it is one of the top ten. Why don’t you try answering it instead of simply dismissing it?
