I believe my comments might have been blunt to the point of being rude. I hope you will accept my apology A.
Apology accepted, Socrates4Jesus. I know that this subject can produce quite an amount of heat, and frankly I am surprised and pleased at the restraint and plain good manners displayed by most of the posters here.
Thank you all for that.
I may sound that way, too, sometimes. I hope that I would have the same chance to apologize and continue.
Also, since this subject can produce a lot more heat than light, I would welcome a few jokes…
Q: Why did the ostrich cross the road?

A: She was stapled to the chicken.
(sorry, but my ‘clean jokes’ repertoire is quite thin and malnourished.)

We put people like Michael Vick to jail for causing unnecessary suffering to animals before killing them.

I am not debating that if the Catholic god is real, then he is soverign. I’m saying that causing children before the age of reason unnecessary pain before killing them is wrong and contradicts the idea of a perfect and omnimax god who has multitides of other options and is far superior than humans in moral reasoning and judgment. To say that an entire population including children is unreachable and unable to be rehabilitated is saying that god is limited. Killing is not black and white, reasoning and method come into play. God could have easily caused the people to die in their sleep, but didn’t.

You have not yet answered my question on how causing children under the age of reason unnecessary suffering is just.

@Socrates4Jesus

Apologies! I had an old friend visiting town last night, and then work today, and this thread just grows at a phenomenal rate!

I’m hoping I will be able to catch up with it all tonight and respond to various people who have been kind enough to address me.

Thanks

Please don’t look down on me because I have a different world-view than you do. As an example, you might think me a ‘sinner’. I am not. I may be criminal, but since I am not an adherent of christianity, calling me a sinner is simply name calling and unkind.
To believe that you are free of any and all sin is naive and, quite frankly, arrogant. All of us are sinners. There were only two sinless people ever to live on planet Earth: Jesus and Mary, and Jesus was half divine. I will not sit here and listen to you tell me that you are free of all sin because I know for sure that I’m not. To say you are free of sin is to compare yourself to Jesus; I’m certain you would not want that job.

Tracy

With such a string of personal attacks, the only thing I can say is that we are not having much success communicating.
I don’t think I need to respond to these kind of attacks either.
If you are distressed by my illustration, then I apologize. I was trying to make a point, but perhaps I went a little too far.

I think I made good points after my tirade, though.

Tracy, look at post # 668. Until you address that, I am not going to continue sharing with you. I don’t want to participate in personal attacks.

If you can provide evidence that ‘sin’ exists, and further provide evidence that I am not free from sin, then I can accept this name you are calling me. If not, then I ask you to refrain, since you would be calling me by a name I did not choose for myself, and one that I find insulting.

Many are the things which we do not have in common, and I look forward to learning more. I do want to share an interest, though. Beading.

In this region, there are many crafters beading things like these lovely gloves. Another type of art that may interest you (as a ‘beader’) is tufting (usually with caribou or moose hair).

I hope we can find a few interests that we share so that all of our discourse is not oppositional.

@Pax

Aside from the points that Aleii has raised, I would put it like this. God is not good by HUMAN standards. We are humans, so if god is not good by such standards, then God is not good to US. Now, I think I agree with you on one level, if such a God exists, then they would be infinitely further away/above us than what we are away/above a dog etc. So I can see where you are coming from, I mean I myself love a good steak (with just the slightest hint of pink left, if anybody was going to ask) and I certainly don’t lose any sleep over the death of the cow.

The major difference, for me anyway, is that I don’t expect the cow who is my food, the dog who mauled a family member or the cockroach to even like me. Nevermind about love me or worship me.

It would be highly illogical of me to create the cows, tell them that killing things and eating grass was wrong, and that I love them, and they should love and worship me. Then when they do one thing or the other I kill not only all but one family of cows in a worldwide flood, but also all the sheep and chickens as well, who didn’t even do anything wrong! This was a great effort of mine to solve one instance of a worldwide epidemic of sin. A few minutes after the waters recede, the cows are eating grass again, it is their nature as I created them afterall.

Next, I think I’ll send my son, a part of myself, to the cows to tell the cows that I haven’t changed the rules one jot or tittle. My goal with this, naturally, was to have the cows gore him to death and this would absolve them of their sin. I don’t know how that was going to do anything anyway, but whatever.

“Try thinking of everything you know, in a general sense, about the world and the life that lives on our planet. Then start thinking about our solar system, the galaxy, and then the universe. When you’ve wrapped your head around this then look back upon yourself and see just how insignificant you are in the grand scheme of things.”

Exactly, the universe wasn’t created with us in mind.

“Please be advised that the OT scriptures are filled with instances of God showing restraint and even reversing a decision to punish people in the fashions that you have described.”

Of course, why would an all knowing, all powerful God have to revise his plan of action?

“This is all well and good but your views in this regard are largely a product of Judeo-Christian values.”

Which, of course, are a product of earlier human values already in existence before God was said to have given the laws to Moses.

Congrats on getting the 666th post too!

“You should trust the 2000 year old organization that Christ established as his church because of Jesus and His promises to his Church.”

The evidence for Jesus is sketchy at best, the evidence for his divinity and miracles is non-existent (or hasn’t been presented to me) and contrary to what the evidence currently indicates is possible.

@PillarofTruth

Interesting that you think there’s proof of microevolution but not proof of macroevolution, when it is actually just the same process. There’s no known barrier to evolutionary change of this kind. The definition of macroevolution you have given is a reasonable one, however we need to make it clear what ‘species’ is. In general, the term is used to describe populations of organisms that are unable to or don’t reproduce (for the purpose of clarity of this definition, let’s forget about asexual reproduction) even if they are in the same place (so you don’t classify the same species of duck in different countries as different species.). Speciation has been proven. If we only had the fossil record evidence, we would be fully justified in considering this proven. If we only had molecular biological evidence, we would be fully justified in considering this proven. Fortunately we have both.

Examples of speciation that have been observed:

A new species of mosquito, the molestus form isolated in London’s Underground, has speciated from Culex pipiens (Byrne and Nichols 1999; Nuttall 1998).

Helacyton gartleri is the HeLa cell culture, which evolved from a human cervical carcinoma in 1951. The culture grows indefinitely and has become widespread (Van Valen and Maiorana 1991).

And don’t get me started on hominid evolution!

My (our?) point about God and his perception of time etc wasn’t so that he could go back and kill a baby in infancy, it was so he could simply not make the soul in the first place, thus all the souls that actually make it into human bodies would still have free will, there would be no restriction in that and he could still be omnibenevolent. That’s not how he does things though, is it? An omniscient God couldn’t work on probabilities and still be omniscient, he’d KNOW the souls were going to hell. You are suggesting that God doesn’t know what is going to happen?

@Socrates4Jesus

“I know you came into this discussion late, Phooney, so you might have missed the challenge given to me by A, which was to provide objective evidence that an omniscient being actually exists.”

Indeed I did come to the conversation late, but I did (eventually) catch up with the entire thread, certainly not an easy task!

You are correct, I can’t think of any place which, when conquered, was shovelled into the sea. Mind you, I haven’t searched through all the history looking for such examples. However, I’m thinking that Ezekiel was aware of where Tyre was, on the coast. As a part of the way it reads, to me anyway, as an inspirational speech to the contemporary invading army, as a further awe-inspiring claim I don’t think it’s that extraordinary to include something to do with the sea swallowing them up. I admit I don’t know how common it was to throw cities into the sea, but I am fully willing to concede to you that there may be no other recorded examples of this.

However, as far as prophecy goes (I think I mentioned this to you in the other thread?) I think they are pretty weak when people are able to act them out themselves.

Besides that, the only name that Ezekiel was able to give was not the conquerer that was going to be responsible for the scraping to the bare rock, it was the name of the contemporary aspiring conquerer, Nebuchadnezzar.

There’s also the other problem of the prophecy saying that Tyre would never be found again, which it clearly was, unless the prophecy was wrong about it being destroyed. It seems like an unavoidable, and cataclysmic, internal contradiction.

@Tracyms1974

“He still likes to work within the physics of this world in order not to shock people.”

Sounds like exactly what an indistinguishable non-existent god would do though, don’t you think?

“Adam and Eve introduced original sin into this world when they listened to the Devil and ate from the Tree of Knowledge.”

I can’t believe how well this sums up an anti-knowledge mind-set. And how well it reflects earlier myths.

Please explain how virgins conceive? In fact, everything you assert in post 669 is a completely moot point because there is no evidence you have presented for it.

Omniscience means knowing all. Not knowing most things. If he makes souls, he makes them to suffer. You only need to look around to see just how much he enjoys creating suffering. So he can’t avoid torturing souls? So much for omnipotence…oh well, it wasn’t one of his main attributes anyway.I wasn’t the one who said that love is possible. Or free will. We are examining your beliefs. I still see nothing about them that makes me believe.Oh, he wouldn’t, wouldn’t he? Then he doesn’t know all? Or he doesn’t punish?
That is the kind of being that is addressed in the bible. Another error on the part of your god?
A…my apologies, we are just not on the same wavelength, though I thought we might be. I don’t really think it is worth my time to discuss this with you; no insult intended there.

You can’t seem to grasp what I am trying to say, whether due to the limitations of the medium, my poor word choices, or our vastly different worldviews. I appreciate your civility, though, and I warmly wish you the best.

No reply for me, A? It’s ok, my last post was probably too far out there for you. I understand.

Best Regards,
Ann
PS: Nice beading. Very cool. I love art.🙂

A person in hell, or a demon in hell can still feel pleasure, but it is a pleasure that is filled with hate.
So you are saying that everyone who doesn’t follow your way is ‘filled with hate’? I hope you really don’t believe that. If you do, it closes you off from most of the people in the world. Including me.

Thank you both for again addressing my concern. I consider this to be progress. That having been said, I am not yet satisfied with your answers. I hope that we can make more progress and that we can get past this particular issue, I will dive into your concerns about God’s punishments which you consider objectionable. I respect your concern in this area, but I think that understanding those things is contingent upon recognizing God’s sovereignty first and that human beings are not in a position to judge the actions taken by a supreme being that created all things.

I am not convinced that either of you have “reconciled” human actions and dominion over animals which we all consider to be okay, with your views concerning God’s actions toward man. I will cut to the chase here. Any answer that does not directly reconcile the two points is not an answer. It seems to be more of a dodge or maybe just a nonsequiteur. Admittedly, from your position and point of view, it is difficult to answer without condemning yourself or conceding that God has every right to do what he does and is above being criticized for it in the same way that you are. I do not want this stage of our discussion to become an impasse. I would, however, like to see you concede the point. You are justified in doing what you do, and God is justified in doing what he does. Your personal views on Michael Vick and his punishments do not exonerate you from actions you take against other living creatures. Some people think that you and I are no better than Michael Vick because we are not vegetarians. They look at us as cruel and beastly. From a purely secular point of view these are nothing more than competing value judgments. In a purely secular sense, it is rather arbitrary to condemn Michael Vick while letting the rest of us slide for killing living creatures for food or any other reason.

In my next post I will begin to address your criticism of God’s actions in the OT. My answer will, I hope, be accepted with an open mind toward scripture and the explanations. My explanations will not be designed to convince you to believe in God. Instead, I hope that you will appreciate the validity of the explanations and perhaps see that the events described in the OT are not incompatible with the concept of a supreme being that is all good. You do not have to be a believer to accept the explanations. Please keep that in mind as I proceed.

Thanking you in advance.

Pax

All thoughts and analysis of scripture have to be grounded in sound hermenuetics and exegesis. This includes taking into consideration the linguistic, cultural, and idiomatic aspects of the text. It is also important to remember that scripture is the word of God written to men in the language of men. I realize that this latter point is kind of a non-starter for an atheist because you believe that it presumes the existence of God prior to proving his existence. I concede that point, in so far as it concerns atheists and their requirements for evidence. That having been said, I would like our discussion to stay focused on the issues in a conceptual sense when it comes to the Supreme Being we call God and His inspired word in the scriptures. If it makes it a little easier for you, then feel free to insert the word “alleged” ahead of the term Supreme Being. I am not attempting to render a proof of God’s existence. I am only going to present logical and sound explanations that are consistent with Christian teaching that explain what is going on in the OT scriptures.

I hope that you will also appreciate the fact that what I will present will be consistent with Christian teaching and understandings. I am not going to make anything up, and what I will give you can be easily verified with a little research. I would also like to point out that it would be helpful to look at what I present to you as an explanation worthy of consideration. This may require you to set aside preconceived ideas and any adversarial sentiments that you may have. Remember, it is easy for all of us[and that means “me” as well] to dismiss things and to quickly roll into a rebuttal mode without carefully thinking about the possible truth contained within that which is presented.

Since it is getting late I will let this much sit on the table for your reflection and will get into the scriptures and your concerns about God’s actions in the OT tomorrow evening. Believe me, Christians, Jews, and Muslims have all grappled with the events of the OT that concern you. Likewise, the Jews and Christians have never been inclined to purge the events under consideration from the canon of scriptures because of what you perceive to be difficulties or contra indications to a loving God. There are reasons for this and Jews and Christians are not stupid people. If these things were truly damaging the inclination would be to purge them from scripture. That inclination has never come to the fore and with good reason.

…I think that understanding those things is contingent upon recognizing God’s sovereignty first and that human beings are not in a position to judge the actions taken by a supreme being that created all things.
If the Catholic god is real, I can accept his sovereignty. This does not mean I accept abuse of power. Abuse of power contradicts god’s perfection. I do not accept the sentence “human beings are not in a position to judge the actions taken by a supreme being that created all things”. We are not dumb, we can think and rationalize, and if something sets off the alarm of our low moral standards (in compared to god), then there is a serious problem. I would be doing god a disservice if I did not carefully examine a religion to ensure that it was the proper way to go by. Truncating a conversation with “you can not judge/understand god” is dismissing an important issue.

Besides, I kill animals not because I’m sovereign, nor is it because I have the power or ability, its because of biology. Your analogy doesn’t completely apply here, IMO
Show me a rational reason why a perfect god would purposefully cause innocents, such as a child under the age of reason unnecessary suffering. What is the point?
I do not want this stage of our discussion to become an impasse. I would, however, like to see you concede the point. You are justified in doing what you do, and God is justified in doing what he does.
No, I have logical reasons for killing - self defense and food to satisfy biology. Biology shows that man was made to be an omnivore. Unless you are saying our biology is immoral, it is acceptable to eat meat… simply do it in the best way possible. God on the other hand has no readily visible logical reason for causing mass suffering when other options are available to him. A person is not justified for causing undue suffering, nor is god. Therefore, I do not concede your point.
It is true that explicit moral understanding is not shared by the world, i.e. just because there is someone out there that thinks pedophilia is fine does not make it so. And this may be a sticking point in the conversation for us, what is the true moral code, as yes, humans can and do err.

If you are deciding to bop around the definition of evil and sin, and say something like god can’t sin against himself therefore god could do anything and it would be right, I can’t agree. And would you honestly say that a logical vegetarian would equate quick killing for food as equal to Michael Vick’s torturing for pleasure? I gave valid reasons for killing animals for self defense or food to satisfy biology. I can not give valid reasons for causing animals pain simply for my pleasure.
In my next post I will begin to address your criticism of God’s actions in the OT. My answer will, I hope, be accepted with an open mind toward scripture and the explanations. I look forward to your explanation. I have been searching for years to reconcile this. The only explanation that I have ever been able to use to partially reconcile this issue is if the majority of the OT is to be considered as allegory.

Have a restful sleep
