Just in case anyone wanted to get back on topic…the only first century writtings that need to read I have read a hundred times. It is called God Word!
That sounds Catholic so that makes you wrong! Catholics misinterpret the Bible anyway they want to make thier Church look good. Go back and pray to your statues for some better material. All this discussion about the truth made me think of a couple of things, please forgive me though if I am out of line or in need of correction:
John 17:16-19 Jesus prays to the father to Sanctify the apostles in the truth - God’s Word, (which is in fact Jesus). This is in preparation for their mission - to spread the Gospel. He also prays that they are protected from the evil one.
Jesus IS THE ABSOLUTE TRUTH - the Good News - the Gospel! The Apostles, blessed by this prayer and the fire of the HOLY SPIRIT were given the authority to build Jesus’ CHURCH around THE TRUTH (Gospel). And they did just that! Behind the office of an earthly sheppard that our Lord instituted himself (Matt 16:18), the apostles taught THE truth to their deaths. Their successors (Church fathers, bishops, presbyters) followed suit even to THEIR deaths. Evil heresies were and ARE rampant, but THE truth marches on. Thanks to the Apostles who passed on, by oral and written tradition, THE truth. They are to this day the protectors of THE truth. Their duties to protect and teach THE truth live on in their successors - the magestirium of THE Church - the pillar and foundation of the TRUTH.
Relative truth ? Well I leave that for Pilate (John 18:8) and his successors to worry about.
Yours in Christ,
RC
I agree with you that it is a form of worship when we use our full faculties to reason to find the Truth. God gave us free will and the ability to reason so that we can find God and love Him. Without free will and reason, our love would not be freely given but forced on us as instinct causes salmon to always spawn in the same place. It is the way of mankind. God didn’t give us all knowledge and absolute truth in the beginning. He gave us life and the ability to reason. He gave us a heart and a soul and a way to experience our world. He gave us free will. That free-will includes the freedom to discover and investigate on our own as we inevitably do.
While our truths seem contradictory and confusing, they are the process we must go through. If we had absolute knowledge then we would be God, wouldn’t we? I’m afraid we’re not.
Peace…
Very good points, Orion! Well spoken indeed.I agree with you that it is a form of worship when we use our full faculties to reason to find the Truth. God gave us free will and the ability to reason so that we can find God and love Him. Without free will and reason, our love would not be freely given but forced on us as instinct causes salmon to always spawn in the same place.
I also agree with you that we are all on a journey to seek the truth and we are required to do this with imperfect knowledge. This is where the gift of faith comes in. With faith, we submit freely to that which we can’t understand because it is a mystery revealed to us by God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
However, don’t confuse the gift to reason with a license to justify things that are untrue. Whenever I hold a belief contrary to Church teaching, this is an opportunity to take it to prayer and get to know God better. It is thru my misperception of the truth and its ultimate reconciliation to the Truth that God makes Himself more clear, more dear, and more near to me and how I live my life.
Finally, you made a statement about how Catholics don’t blindly follow every utterance of the Pope and Bishop without question. This is absolutely true. On some issues we are free to disagree with the Pope or Bishop. If my Bishop were a Packer fan and said they are the best team in the world, I’m free to disagree with him. Or when Pope John Paul II said that the Iraq War was imprudent, I’m free to disagree with him so long as my rationale centered on what is most just for the Iraqi’s and not some selfish goal such as seizing the oil fields.
But on issues of morals and spiritual direction, we are called to question it, take it to prayer and ultimately reconcile the teaching to our life and accept it as inspired by the Holy Spirit. This is where your much earlier post about “authority, authority, authority” is right. Catholics assent freely (using our reason and free will) to the Teaching Authority of the Church as we believe it to be inspired by the Holy Spirit and to be held as the Truth by all believers without regard to the individuals “perception” of a different private revelation. Protestants also assent freely to an authority whether that authority is themself (limited by only their experience and education), their Pastor (limited by his experience and education), or a combination thereof.
No, I think if you look into it more carefully you’ll find that disagreement on this would, in fact, be a mortal sin.If my Bishop were a Packer fan and said they are the best team in the world, I’m free to disagree with him. .
Nancy, Nancy, Nancy: I fear for your soul. You are possessed by the greatest of the demons, Satan himself. Get on the next plane to Rome (or Minneapolis) where only intensive prayer (or a weekend of brats, beer, and more beer while dressed in Purple and Gold) can possibly save you. However, I fear the worst. You are probably gone for eternity. No, I think if you look into it more carefully you’ll find that disagreement on this would, in fact, be a mortal sin.

Both of you are living in fantasy land. The Vikings and Packers are two bad teams in a very bad division.Nancy, Nancy, Nancy: I fear for your soul.
