I heard someone, like Jimmy Akin or else, say that they’re not really Churches or rites, but some other term, variations of the same thing. I believe the use of these terms still confuses me and I’m trying. I’ll have to look up the term “sui iuris”. I don’t recall it. Your post facinates me and I’ve been meaning to read more on the history of the Mass/DL. One day.
Thanks.
Sui Iuris means “Self Governing”, or more literally “Self law”.

What it means in practice is that they are answerable to the Pope, and certain dicasteries, but have their own separate system of hierarchs and their own canon law. (A few don’t have their own hierarchs, but they are the exception.) And most importantly, their own revisions of the liturgies and traditions.

The 14 churches sui iuris of the Byzantine Rite are each in theory autonomous but answerable to the pope.

In places where there are sufficient parishes of a particular church, a separate diocese will be set up for them. Some of them are large… The Eparchy of Phoenix overlaps a dozen Roman dioceses… and has about as many parishioners as one of the smaller of those roman dioceses.

Autonomous would be the direct English translation, and given the Orthodox use of the same term in the same sense, makes more sense to use. 😉

This understanding is skewed.

As a Roman Catholic, you understand the Roman Catholic Church and the other Churches in Communion with the Pope constitute the “One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church”.

The Eastern Orthodox are in schism with the Catholic Church. They are literally separated from the Church. While their liturgy, Apostolic Succession, and Sacraments are valid, they are “illicit” by being out of communion with the Pope.

Therefore, to switch to an Orthodox Church from the Catholic Church is to commit a mortal sin. You aren’t switching to a different rite, as in Byzantine Catholic, you are converting religions.

If there the Roman Catholic Church is “the One Church”, you stay in the Catholic Church. Understand there are theological and religious differences with the Eastern Orthodox, and is not a matter of preference.
Great philosophy…:switch to an orthodox church from the catholic church is to commit a mortal sin"… dear borther, let me ask you something…in whom do you believe? Jesus, the one and only way to be saved or the man-made religions?. Dont be cheated by the brain washing catholic dogmas…they just say it is the only way and the ture church…Study the Bible, follow Jesus. DONT FOLLOW ANY RELIGION. Jesus clearly say the way to be saved…

Praying for you.

You really must research the doctrines you are worried about, perhaps ask others about them here, for 2 important reasons.
  1. From the Catholic point of view, leaving the Catholic Church can be seriously dangerous for the soul. In fairness, let us acknowledge that from the Orthodox point of view, for someone to leave their communion would also be spiritually dangerous. Do not take it lightly!
  2. Eastern Orthodoxy takes doctrine seriously. If you really have specific issues with the filioque, or with the Immaculate Conception as such, you may find a home there. But if you have trouble with authority, you will still find authority in Eastern Orthodoxy. They greatly honor Mary, so you cannot escape that. Eastern Orthodoxy is a place where ancient doctrine is preserved, you cannot pick and choose what to believe. Also, it is a place where spiritual discipline is taken seriously as well (confession, fasting, regular prayer, etc).
Easter Christians, please feel free to correct any mistakes I may have made.
ohhh…great…leaving the catholic church is spiritually dangerous…do explain this new catholic theory??? You catholics are brain washed and blind. Only because they dont study the holy Bible. Follow Jesus only…dont be cheated dear catholic brothers. Catholic church practices all ungodly rituals which the Bible condemns like idol worship. they are guided by saitan…be aware…

Even though I am not part of any church and prefer to just go to whatever catholic church is near, I would like to attend an orthodox mass to see if I like it more than the roman catholic. I already did some research and they look pretty good. I don’t like how some roman catholics believe everything the pope says is right and I don’t like how the roman church was set up. The pope should not have that much power because he can be tempted to be corrupt. Anyway, there is just one problem. In my area there are no orthodox churches. There is something that looks like a byzantine catholic church but im not sure if it’s even a church. There is a orthodox church that is like 30 minutes away by car and my parents are roman catholic so why would they want to drive all the way there just so they can drop me off? what should I do?
Dear Brother,

Really nice to hear from you.
Many rituals and doctrines of the catholic church are ungodly and very against to the Bible, for eg. Idol worship.
They do idol worhip because, they are guided by satan.
So before changing your church study bible and the teachings of jesus.
it will be OK even if you dont join any denominations, but still you can live as a true christian.
I dont believe, Jesus really approves all these churches as they claim.
STUDY BIBLE …TRULY FOLLOW JESUS…THEN YOU WILL BE SAVED.
BUT NEVER GO BACK TO THE CATHOLIC RELIGION.
WISH YOU GOOD LUCK,
praying for you,

Amit
