Hi friends,

I wanted to start this thread to gain a better understanding on the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear a non catholic christian declare “I am saved”

not much. we believe we are redeemed by the shed blood, death, burial, and ressurection of our Lord Jesus Christ. and we are working out our salvation with fear and trembling. just as the apostle instructed. are you coming from an arminian background, or a calvinist one? peace 🙂

hi shondrea. welcome to CAF:) glad to have you. no disagreement here. but not all of them are so bad. and the ones that are hostile, and angry. simply sharpen our debating skills, and teach us to act charitalbly…(at least we try) in a nasty environment. Peace to you and yours:)

If at this moment you are in the state of grace, free from mortal sin, then you are in fact saved.
Will you be saved tommorow? That is another question.
 
I would think the same thing if a Catholic said it:

How do you know?

Even St. Paul had doubt to his salvation. If you say that you are saved, then it would mean that you either did what God wanted you to do and now He owes it to you. Or you are so sure of your own sanctity that you could enter heaven right now. Neither one of those positions strike me logical.

Christians are the in-grafted branches.

God pruned out some of the original branches (Jews who rejected Christ, from my understanding).

He grafted us in.

If He pruned the original branches because they didn’t bear fruit, won’t He even moreso prune the in-grafted branches if they stop bearing fruit?

Certainly, the “bearing fruit” part is hard for us to discern, but, to quote fermat,

“How do you know?”

Better to be cautious and live a life holy and pleasing to God. After all, that’s our logically (and biblically) appropriate sacrifice/response to God’s grace, right?
 
I think of OSAS, which is a comforting concept, but not consistent with the sum total of scripture. I also think of Jesus saying “he who perseveres to the end will be saved” (Matthew 10:22, 24:13, Mark 13:13), as well as “he who believes and is baptized will be saved” (Mark 16:16). Catholics should know that salvation is a life-long process of drawing ever nearer the Sacred Heart of Jesus out of love of Him, abiding in Him, and of perseverance.

It makes me think of a lifeguard who keeps a totally “undeserving” stranger from drowning. And makes me think of verses like this:

Acts 16:29ff—And the jailer called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved…”

John 5:2—I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes Him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.

John 6:28—Then the Pharisees said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?”Jesus answered them, “This is the ***work ***of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”

John 6:4—I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life.

Ephesians 2:8-10—For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast.

Ephesians 1:13-14—In Him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in Him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of His glory.

2 Tim. 1:12—I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that He is able to guard until that Day what I have entrusted to Him.

Titus 3:4ff—But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to His own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. The saying is trustworthy.

1 John 5:10ff—Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart… And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.
 
are ‘born again’ adulterers and fornicators guaranteed their salvation?

What immediately comes to mind is, “Who made you God?” Since I have that mentality living right across the road from me, not always presented in an especially Christian manner, I have come to see it as an exercise in charity. So I make every effort to be careful to be sure that what comes out of my mouth, if anything, is non-judgmental, and keep him in my prayers. Actions speak louder than words.

Anyway, the first thing that comes to mind for me is “Good for you, being saved and all”, “I’m in the process of being saved” and “Wow, must be nice to be cock-sure that it’s a done deal and you don’t have to heed St. Paul’s warning of slipping into apostasy”.

It makes me think of a lifeguard that sees a man, that he had continualy warned, jumping out of a boat into shark infested waters.

Romans 8:13

of all the verses on salvation. these are only very few. how convienient to only pick the ones that SEEM to back up the doctrine of osas and instant salvation. when taken with the whole council of God, and the guidance of the majesterium, they really do not seem to back up this doctrine at all. Peace 🙂
 
The first thing that comes to mind is that the person in question believes Christ died for his sins, and that he accepts that - he believes likely in the baptism of faith.

I also know he is probably some sort of evangelical Christian, and he may believe in a once-saved-always saved doctrine, but that last is not always the case. I would be pretty sure that he is not a Calvinist.

To paraphrase Yogi Berra: “You’re not saved until you’re saved” In my view, we are saved when Christ, from His judgment seat, declares “Well done, good and faithful servant. Come and share your Master’s joy”

Notwithstanding the sincerity, I would think on some level that the statement is something akin to a baseball player declaring “we win” in the middle of the third inning.

I would also say a prayer that it will be so (that the person will be saved).

…I’ve been here three months. Why are you welcoming me? Not that I don’t appreciate the sentiment, of course

Anyway, I never said all were. The question was, what was my first thought. That’s my first thought
