gain a better understanding on the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear a non catholic christian declare “I am saved.”
It makes me think of a lifeguard who keeps a totally “undeserving” stranger from drowning. And makes me think of verses like this:
Acts 16:29ff—And the jailer called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you
will be saved…”
John 5:2—I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes Him who sent me has eternal life and
will not be condemned; he
has crossed over from death to life.
John 6:28—Then the Pharisees said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the
works of God?”Jesus answered them, “This is the ***work ***of God, that you
believe in Him whom He has sent.”
John 6:4—I tell you the truth, he who believes
has everlasting life.
Ephesians 2:8-10—For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast.
Ephesians 1:13-14—In Him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in Him,
were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the
guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of His glory.
2 Tim. 1:12—I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that He is able to guard until that Day what I have entrusted to Him.
Titus 3:4ff—But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, He
saved us,
not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to His own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. The saying is trustworthy.
1 John 5:10ff—Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart… And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may
know that you have eternal life.
