Before I begin. Yes heaven is for real.

However I do not believe in Colton Burpo’ “trip to heaven”

I don’t believe in the story because it contradicts other heaven trip stories.

Now this one is my second and final reason (my personal favorite)

Colton says he saw Jesus riding a rainbow colored horse. :banghead:

Was it this he saw (picture below)

This is why I am always a skeptic when it comes to these round trips to heaven and back to tell the tale.

Please note I respect the family and their faith. I just don’t believe the story one bit.

…and that unicorn isn’t “rainbow” colored.
And…a lot of near death experiences differ.

These are the main two reasons you don’t believe the kid?

The gospel accounts contradict each other in several places, as you know.

.
👍 Accounts which concur** in every detail** may well be concocted!

Well I don’t think you have to feel bad for not believing every NDE story. I think a lot of them are fabricated, in whole or in part.

I remember reading one by a man who says he was clinically dead for a while and went to Hell, then got taken on a tour of Hell by Jesus (supposedly as a warning to change his sinful ways). He and Jesus stood there watching all these people get horribly tortured and Jesus was basically saying “hey, how about that” before moving on. Then the man was rescued by his mother praying for him (odd seeing how the man was a Protestant and they don’t generally believe in intercessory prayers/praying for that dead).

Not only did I disbelieve it, I also found it quite disturbing.

I don’t believe it either. Too many years have elapsed since the time of the supposed event and the telling of the story.

There may be some elements of truth to it, but there is also many years for the parents and boy to fabricate a good story.

I do, however, believe his trip to the BANK with his earnings from writing the book:rolleyes:

Eh maybe he did, maybe he didn’t. I’m not so invested to have a definite opinion either way. The only part that stood out in the book, to me that I recall, was that it seemed as though the parents took a while to get him to a hospital where he would actually receive the treatment he needed. I mean it’s been a while since I’ve read the book but that’s the most pertinent event I recall and I found that to be a bit alarming.?
I briefly saw a trailer not too long ago titled “heaven is for real.” Apparently they’re making it into a movie. Don’t know how ‘glamorized’ it will be compared to the book, not that I’ll be seeing it. (Didn’t even get the hype about the book once I read it.)

I read the book and remain open to the idea that it may very well be true but again, that it may not be true after all. The fact that it happened to a non catholic and a minister doesn’t impact my ability to believe it could be legitimate—I believe that many of our non Catholic brothers and sisters may very well go to heaven, so for a non Catholic minister’s family to experience such a thing is reasonable to me—but again, I can’t see anything in the book that absolutely convinced me of its authenticity! Catholics are NOT required to believe in any of these “personal revelations”. I read a NDE that happened to a priest and even it didn’t totally convince me. For that matter, I don’t believe in Medjugorde either. Careful scrutiny of such things shows just plain intelligence to me.

I read the book and felt it was the father’s story more than the boys, and definatly a protestant version. The boy was sooo young and I think he believes what he was told by adults. Not interested in seeing the movie. They have made lots of money on this whole thing. God Bless, Memaw

It’s been over a year since I read the book, and at the time, I raised my eyebrows in several instances. However, I cannot remember what bothered me – it was very unorthodox in parts.

Medjugorde was disapproved by the Church.
In fact, it is still pending review. Let’s drop it, ok, before the mods do?? :)🙂

As to the book.

I don’t care enough to have an opinion. NDE stories are wonderful. Still, science could prove tomorrow that NDE is just the dying human head’s last hurrah before the breath in the lungs runs out; so nothing to put faith in.

God Bless and ICXC NIKA

I don’t believe it at all either. I won’t read it or watch the movie. In our Catholic tradition we have many Saints who have achieved union with God while still on Earth. None have mentioned anything explicit becuase there are no words that can possibly descibe the reality of God and Heaven. If what this kid (or more likely his father) says, then our Saints are wrong. I’ll stick with the mystics and Saints for accounts of experiences with God. Can you imagine St. Francis trying to make money off of his experience of Christ and the stigmata he recieved?

ETA: On second thought, that is a bit curmudgeonly of me. I’ll end by saying that if it gives people hope and doesn’t lead them into error I don’t have a problem with others believing it. I personally reject it completly though.

Heh, your post reminds me of that Simpsons episode where Krusty the Clown is a judge in a film festival and gets bribed to vote for a certain film - *“Let’s just say it moved me…TO A BIGGER HOUSE!!..Oops, I said the quiet part loud and the loud part quiet.” *😃

I read one NDE that I flat out reject. It was written by protestant minister, Mary K. Baxter. The fact that she is protestant is not why I reject it. Let’s look at some quotes.

-Jesus told me that there is a place in Hell called the “fun center.”

-Soon we came to the pit where the woman was. She was pleading with all her soul for Jesus to take her out of there. “Lord,” she said, “haven’t I been here long enough? My torment is more than I can bear. Please, Lord, let me out!” Sobs shook her form, and such pain was in her voice. I knew she was suffering greatly.

I said, “Jesus, is there nothing You can do?”

Jesus then spoke to the woman. " You would not hear, you would not see, and in anger you turned them away. I placed you where you could hear My Word. But you would not give your heart to Me. You were not sorry, nor were you ashamed of what you were doing. You hardened your heart and turned Me away. Now you are lost and forever undone. You should have listened to Me."

Here we have Jesus talking to a woman in Hell and the soul of the woman is pleading for mercy. Jesus pretty much says, “Yeah…nope.”

At one point in this book, Jesus leaves the woman He is escorting through hell alone with the demons for hours and only comes back after she has been tormented, telling her she would never truly believe in hell unless she experienced it for herself.

Clearly not everything is inspired.

if someone went to heaven why would they come back?

I could believe that someone didn’t really go to heaven but God gave them a glimpse of heaven, or more specifically he gave someone a “trailer” of the beatific vision. I personally believe that once your soul is in heaven it is there for eternity. Think about it imagine someone’s soul going to heaven coming back to earth and then he condemns himself to hell. 😦

the story may be true but I don’t believe his soul actually went to heaven. At most he saw a vision of heaven.

Ah, maybe not. I was 25 years old before I told anyone about my NDE at the age of 4. One reason was my family was not Christian and I didn’t think they would believe me. The other was I simply did not think of the experience on a daily basis. It was something that changed me and how I thought of things in comparison to my family, but I did not think of the specific event on a daily basis.

When I did share it, I told my mother first and then took several years more prior to telling my dad. The second person that I described it too was my Pastor after I was Baptized. So having multiple years pass between the event and talking about it would not be that strange.

Oh, I so agree.

I read the book not long after it came out. A friend gave it to me to read because she had just loved the book.

It seemed so obvious to me that the guy wanted his 15 minutes and he was going to get it through his kid.

The book was written in such a way to that just sounded fabricated.

There would be a tale of what the boy saw. Then in the father’s voice, he would explain how right the boy was, by quoting scripture. Then there would be a tale of what the boy saw. Then the book would change to the father’s voice and he would explain how right the boy was, by quoting scripture. Then there would be a tale of what the boy saw, and it continued like that pretty much for the entire book.

In the back of the book, there were “questions from readers” that explained why the boy’s tale was different than other tales. Mostly it was trying to pull in more religions. Mary really was there, but obviously just another person with wings. And of course there were animals, including lions, in heaven.

All I hope is that his 15 minutes are up soon.
