For one thing, if you take original sin at face value, we are not designed to die!

That is one reason why death is so hideous and shameful.

Also, if NDE is a result of “physiological response of a [dying] body”, then it cannot be a preview of coming attractions that do not involve the earthly body!

ICXC NIKA.
I don’t even know how to answer this - you seem to have created your own theology in which I am not schooled.

It’s been over a year since I read the book, and at the time, I raised my eyebrows in several instances. However, I cannot remember what bothered me – it was very unorthodox in parts.
That’s what I though, too…

I am a cradle Catholic-I believe in heaven, hell and purgatory. However, I do not believe this story. This is a very young and very sick child. He likely had a high fever and severe abdominal pain for several days prior to the rupture of the appendix, with the expected delirium and dehydration. Why did the parents delay seeking treatment?? Based on that poor decision (negligence, in my opinion) alone, any claims the parents made would make me questions their judgement and actions. In addition, many children in post-anesthetic ‘twilight’ are confused and disoriented. I would expect it would be worse in this severely compromised child-I am a former pediatric nurse and have cared for many children with the same diagnosis. What I do believe is that this vulnerable little boy may have reported seeing lights and voices due prolonged fever and post-anesthesia which the parents (father) embellished until he fabricated this fairy tale-motivated by secondary gain $$$

???

That human death is punishment for original sin, is standard theology.

It would follow that therefore we were not designed to die.

I saw the boy and family on Hannity last evening and it seems every time Hannity asked him a question he could only say, It’s difficult to put into words. Well how did he come up with enough to put in a book and movie, I wonder!! God Bless, Memaw

YES - I couldn’t finish it because I was so angry at the parents. I also thought that the father was incredibly self-involved. He went on and on and on at the beginning about himself and his medical issues.

I don’t know if I believe the story or not, but I don’t think that it was as ‘unbelievable’ as it was supposed to be considering the child’s upbringing. For the father to pretend to know what his son did and didn’t know about Heaven was just silly - I mean, kids notice and hear a LOT more than we think they do. He also would have been exposed to other people of faith like Sunday School teachers, etc
I agree that kids are exposed to and notice things adults don’t think they are aware of. However, in my case there was no exposure to anyone going to Church in my family, or even talking about God until after my NDE. After my NDE I was much more aware of all events and things around me, including conversations, what the rest of the community was doing, what was going on in politics you name it.

I really think that no Church or Faith can say what any individuals NDE might be like, what God might reveal to them, or that what they say is revealed is in error. Much of what I experienced had specific meaning to my particular life and the fact that my immediate and extended family did not go to Church or commonly express a deep belief in God. All I know, is after the experience I knew God existed, that there was a heaven and hell, that I should pray, could offer my sufferings to God and that the salvation of souls was the most important thing in the world.

nothing wrong with the general details of the sickness, same thing not quite as young happened to myself as a kid , plain and simple and I remember the whole thing just fine.

I hope people stop and think about this book and so-to-be movie. It was written by parents who went to college to be pastors. They are making this story up and the boy probably believes them. They told they boy all these things and say ‘you told us about these things’…WAKE UP!!! You are making them MILLIONS and they are laughing at you!!!

Of course that’s one possibility, but we shouldn’t assume the absolute worst. You have to be inhumanly coarse, if not sociopathic, to turn a horrific experience like your child nearly dying into a moneymaking scheme. While I’m not inclined to believe the story after watching an interview with Colton, I do think the intentions surrounding the book are a lot less nefarious than you suggest.

I too am not sure about the money idea. But lots of elements in the book seemed made up.
However many Protestant people do these things to make money from time to time

I stand by my comments, Harvard. I forgive you for saying, “You have to be inhumanly coarse, if not sociopathic…”

And just what makes you such an expert? Where you there? Did you hear them? Did the boy tell you this?

I think you are a bit to ready to accuse people of things you could not possibly have the knowledge or evidence to prove. That is a sin. I suggest you worry about that more than people believing or not believing the story. Let folks decide for themselves.

As one who had a NDE, I would hate to have your opinion states on what I experienced.

Why should ones skepticism about a supposed round trip ticket to heaven be a sin. When he wasn’t even dead at all. I understand from your perspective, but for many of us that never had that happen to us we are left with either believing or being skeptical. While I don’t know your NDE, it would probably be a more probable one than Colton Burpo’ NDE.

Or maybe were just a little tired of these overly publicized NDES

I believe everything our Church teaches about the afterlife, and I do, generally, think NDEs are real (I read a pretty good book by a physician who catalogs and analyzes them extensively and says with confidence that it’s not a function of the brain dying).

I started reading Heaven is for Real, but never finished it. While it may be true, it was hard to completely buy into it because it seemed heavily influenced by the father --and let’s face it, his day job is convincing people of God and Heaven. It would have had more credibility had it not involved a pastor’s son.

I’m concerned about the movie coming out, which will likely be outrageous and overly-dramatized, and filled with confusing theologies.

I agree that the Heaven is for Real leaves plenty of room for skepticism, but Proof of Heaven I found much more reliable.

I donno how much of it is perfectly on the mark but don’t think they are liars.

Plus, it was a long time ago relative to the kid and his age, so…

But watched the family in an interview, Mother and Father and how they are as people, hes a bit of a wimp ( not meant in a negative way) and she is pretty smart…so what I think for now is these people are not
'takers.

In life there are takers, and there are givers, its not in the genes as takers , they are not manipulating takers.

So…doesn’t mean its 100% true. but it seems better then well I guess Disney anyway. They are nice people, I like how they are with each other. Don’t really care if its 100% true, something may have happened or maybe not, but any way its nice for the spring and the hopefully good weather ahead.

But see, if it isn’t 100% true, then they are takers. And liars. Because they claim it is 100% true.

And they have sold books claiming it is 100% true. And they made money on the sale of the rights to the movie, again, claiming it is 100% true.

So if it isn’t 100% true, they have been selling a lie.
