Hello O.S. LukeSt. Thomas walked with Jesus, but had his doubts. His doubts, however, lead to strong faith. “Doubting Thomas” was the first disciple to confess that Jesus was Lord and God. His doubts lead him to faith, so much so that Thomas went on to India to preach and convert.
Those who had dreams and hopes destroyed often fall into doubt - as did Job of the Old Testament. But God didn’t turn away from Job because of his doubts - nor did He turn away from the Israelites, and our Psalms contain many hymns of lament where God’s presence and power were doubted.
If you have no doubts, Jimmy, great. However, some folks who have lost much and had much destroyed do have their doubts. Working through those doubts makes faith stronger and surer.
I’m not sure if boasting that we have no doubts is very wise.
I was the pastor to a man who was wrongfully imprisoned for a heinous crime he was later cleared of; he was incarcerated for 4 years. He lost his job, lost his family because they did not want to be associated with a man who could have committed such a crime, and he lost his friends who felt likewise. He was previously a very respected man in his community, and very devout in faith. After this experience, his doubts were innumerable.
It taught me that no one is immune to doubt; my parishioner, Thomas, or Job. God can redeem our doubt, though, and increase our faith.
Excellent post!
For me personally; it was when I discovered that I truly loved Mary, the Mother of our Lord, that I had no doubts about her son, my Lord and Savior and His Roman Catholic Church.
The Rosary is a powerful prayer and so is love!
Additionally, the Sacraments have strengthened my faith and are real to me now. The Holy Eucharist is a powerful source of my strength and when we truly understand and actually believe that it (the Eucharist) truly transforms’ into the real body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ, it becomes real to us and it is then that our faith becomes real and there is no turning back from that point.
Many other devout Catholics, whom I have spoken with, share my experiences with Mary and the Sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist.
Even to this day, it is an overwhelming experience for me, when receiving the Body and Blood of Christ.
He (Jesus) said that He would never leave us and He never did.
Maybe that is why I try so hard here. It is because I now, truly experience the fullness of my Catholic Faith and I want that for others.
No, I have NO doubts! Nothing can separate me from my Lord and His Church now.
It was this kind of faith and lack of doubt that enabled the Apostles and many early martyrs to go to their death, often times, singing and praying. They knew who Jesus was/is, They knew who Mary was/is, they knew that they belonged to Christ’s True Church and they believed in the Sacraments.
Thank you for your post.
