My ex-fiance once said something when I said I had no doubts at all about marrying him and was angry that he did:

“If you don’t have any doubts at all, then you don’t understand the seriousness of the committment you are making.”

Doubts sometimes can be categorized as simple misgivings, and they are not bad. Doubts make you reevaluate any committment or decision you are making, and they need not make you abandon it. They only force you to see what you still feel unsure about and find reasons to justify it…or not.

I did doubt, and those doubts led me to eventually not marry him. I reevaluated my insecurities, and found he was not the right man. It could have also worked the other way. I could have reevaluated, and found that the faults were my own and come to a better and stronger relationship.

Doubts are from God to either strengthen you or to turn you away from an incorrect path. They should be carefully considered.

Ummm, actually you know people were questioning his statement, people were refuting his statement, and people were saying, “Man, do they really believe that” and “I always wondered if they believed that and here is a man who says he is and they do.”

I find it rather offputting that you could be so quick to claim this as 'just messing with you guys" (or girls in my case), and to basically chortle at how ‘gullible’ some people were for believing.

Tell me, my friend, are you in the habit of disbelieving people as a matter of course? Most of us here give people the benefit of the doubt until/unless they themselves prove they are not trustworthy. And not all of us have been here since the Forum inception. There are members of CAF who have been here as long as I whom I have never ‘met’ on-line as I’ve never happened to be on, or view, a forum where they posted. . .and vice versa. Just because you may happen to ‘know’ all about what sweet Allis Ben Bolt was pulling, doesn’t mean everybody else was privy to that feat of mindreading. That’s why we usually put in an emoticon if we’re trying to be sarcastic so that we don’t come across as truly ‘meaning’ what we say.
um, he told me that he was joking with yall, so maybe I can know?

No, I do not doubt other’s beliefs, I simply don’t believe it. I do not doubt that the RCC is the true church, I just don’t believe it, hence no doubt since nothing to doubt.

The point made is a true one: Church teaching has to be accepted in its entirety. Anything not explicitly accepted, is reckoned to be implicitly accepted. So, if Vatican 5 in 2500 defines that aliens are related to the Church (which may happen, provided aliens exist ;)), that counts as being implicit in the deposit of faith of faith from the very beginning: to be defined, it has to be in the DoF, much as the oak is in the acorn.

The specific points chosen don’t illustrate your meaning 😦 In 2500, the painlessness of the Child-Bearing for the BVM may be dogmatised - at present, it is only something called a “pious belief”. It is not part of authentic Church teaching - though it’s not impossible it may be discerned as part of it. That contraception is absolutely forbidden to Christians, OTOH, makes your point perfectly 🙂 The thing having to be accepted, is the AuCaTe - whether or not it is taught infallibly. People confuse
  • the authority of the obligation arising from the exercise of infallibility
    with
  • the authority of the obligation arising from the character of what is taught.
Authentic Catholic Teaching can oblige our consciences to receive it as what is said to be, without being infallible. Most of Vatican II’s teaching is of this second kind. It is completely wrong to think that only infallible stuff is to be received as obliging us to accept it. So it is irrelevant to our duty as believers - though not to apologetics & history - whether teaching X is infallible: we should be asking whether teaching X is what the Church’s Authority wants the Christ’s faithful to believe as authentic teaching. If more people realised this, there would be far less rejection of Vatican 2. Not all the teaching in the CCC is infallibly true - but all the the teaching in the CCC is AuCaTe. 🙂
Sorry, got carried away - just wanted to put your point beyond all possible argument AFAP 🙂
Thanks for clarifying, I guess I perceived it(Mary and child birth) as church teachings because of how it was being explained to me. Thanks for correcting my post.

You’re welcome 🙂 - here’s hoping I didn’t add any mistakes to confuse things 🙂

I have no doubts….None!

I believe in Jesus Christ and His Roman Catholic Church.

So, I don’t understand why there are so many here, who have doubts and seem insecure about their faith.

How many here, are absolutely 100% sure of their faith and how many of you have doubts… and why?
I can’t fathom how someone could possibly be 100% sure of your faith. And the arguments you have given in the past for your beliefs don’t exactly give me confidence that you have sound reasons for your certainty. But I’m happy for you, as long as it doesn’t lead you into arrogance and cruelty toward those who are less confident of their beliefs.

I don’t understand your post here…

Doubts are from God to either strengthen you or to turn you away from an incorrect path. They should be carefully considered.
Doubts are more likely from the Devil to lead you away from God. All temptation has at its root doubt.

It bears repeating (I hope) that what some term ‘doubts’ are not truly doubts at all, but merely ‘difficulties’. At times all of us can be visited with transient, fleeting, ‘what if’ difficulties which can at times leave us wondering for a time, questioning, searching. If ultimately these difficulties are surmounted with prayer, humble submission, requests for the grace of understanding, and obedience even when not fully comprehending or thinking one fully ‘accepts’, these are not ‘doubts’ per se.

Most people who say they have doubts are experiencing those relatively short-lived difficulties.

And even those who have truly obstinant “I’m not sure the Church is right about X, Y, and Z”, provided they truly are ‘not sure’, and are willing, even when they have difficulty, to accept that the Church is right and to act on that, are not truly ‘doubtful.’

However, some say they have doubts. . .but they don’t have doubts. They truly are fairly certain that they do not believe a certain article or aspect, but what they doubt is if they are ‘ready’ to act on this appropriately. Here we have the ‘cafeteria’ type Catholic for example who speaks of ‘doubt’ about, say, women’s ordination. In his or her heart, this person believes the Church is wrong. He has no doubt of being right in this; what he or she doubts is whether or not the Church is going to finally ‘join the 21st century’ and see the light. This is not a true ‘doubt’ either. This is a person who has set himself/herself up against the Church and is now for many reasons availing himself/herself of the ‘wiggle room’ of claiming ‘reasonable doubt’ and thus attempting to keep the trappings of Catholicism while denying the tenets.

Unfortunately, we live in a new “Babel” today in which we appear to have a common language but in which few people will agree on a given word’s definition.

Until we have unity of definition, we’re not going to be able to do much. If your ‘doubt’ definition differs from mine, often we’ll talk past each other and misunderstand each other.

I don’t have doubts that this Church is really his Church. I know it is 100%.

What I do doubt however, sometimes, I doubt that God really does care about me. I’m a very big sinner, and the passage “I will close my ears on those who call on my name saying “I have preached in your name…”” Ect. I don’t know where it is, but I know it’s in the Bible somewhere…

I doubt He cares about me sometimes…
Doubt Not! I’ve been there, when I was away from the Church. Came back watching EWTN by chance. The Brilliance of Minds, Wisdoms, Ideas, Humor, Creativity have caused me to be an addict. It is a Great learning tool. I learned from Fr Pacwa that the ‘Sign of Peace’ was begun by the Apostles, Etc, Etc.:highprayer: :nun1: :nun2:

The more I learn of the Church, the more I fall in love of It, and Our Lord. The More am Involved with the Church, the More I Appreciate it, and the More I Know Our Lord, and Live His way, the stronger and less worried I am. Am always eager student, and learn so Much on CAF. I worry, doubt nothing (Except some National Politicians!!! :tsktsk: 🤓

Never a joiner, now in 7 Ministries, having first discovered the Legion of Mary group, of Door-to-Door apostles. A Very knowledgeable group, helping people Find Our Lord, God.
The verse you began is Our Lord’s Teaching to False preachers/teachers who Use Faith, Religion, Christianity for their own Pocketbook or agenda, not our Lord’s. Never worry about that verse, or being a sinner. Every one of us are. All we need to do is to help others more, not ourselves, and try to live more Our Lord;s way, not ours. We find the more we Try a little, the more we go Our Lord’s way. And, we have Our Lord’s Great Gift, which Shrinks call the Best Medicine there is: Confession, Reconciliation. Sigmund Freud, their troubled founder, said in the 19th century that He has fewest patients in practicing Catholics. And he had Known problems he was famed for,m but thought himself ‘too big’ to do Our Lord/The Church’s way.
One has to be ‘big enough’ to Live the Lord/Church’s way’, not ours. (We get boring 🙂

I have no doubt at all that the Catholic Church among all the different churches that are in existence now is the Church that Jesus founded and set up. If that is the question, yes, I do not have any doubt that I am in the correct church.

As for personal faith, that can be shaky sometimes and yes there is doubt at times. Though I have to admit that generally it is good.

Yes, like when I look into the night sky and see the stars and I do begin to wonder, are not we just a tiny speck in the vast universe? Is there anyone else out there? Does God know each and everyone of us? What about if we are merely robots planted by extraterrestrial aliens and when we die we are merely expiring?

That kind of thought do run in my mind sometimes but after considering all things, I have no doubt that there is a God that’s responsible for all this. It’s kind of tough to believe the things we do not see and touch. But for me, God is kind and gracious because I do often encounter him in my daily life in small and big miracles, which I always attributed to Him.

+Thank you God, for being my God. Amen.+

So to clarify:

-You never doubt that you know the Will of God in any given circumstance or situation? You always know exactly what God wants you to be saying/doing/thinking?

-You never doubt your ability to understand and interpret the writings and oral teachings of your priest, bishop, etc right up to the writings of the Church Fathers and the Magesterium throughout history? You believe you always know exactly what they are saying in any talk, letter or theological treatise?

-You haven’t felt any doubts about how you phrased your OP since beginning to read this post?

There are others I could bring up at present, but let’s start with these three and then see if “No Doubt” is still more than a phenomenally successful ska band. 😃

These are self doubts not doubts about the truth of the Church, which is what I think the OP was talking about. Do I doubt MY understanding of God’s will? Naturally. Do I doubt what the Church says about the will of God? Never. Do I doubt my understanding of the Church Teachings? Sometimes. Do I doubt the Teachings of the Church? Never.

I am fallible, the Magisterium is not.

As a convert many years ago. I have no doubt, the Catholic Church is the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church, of the living God, the pillar and ground of TRUTH. No doubt about it.

The Poll Results for today are -
Code:
 **Doubts - 36.49%**
No Doubts - 63.51%

What is the secret to not having any doubts?

I think the Sacraments would be a good, first place to look.

Your thoughts?

Merry Christmas - Happy birthday baby Jesus!

The Church’s teaching and Scriptures being in complete agreement, would probably be one of the biggest reasons for me

Marsha,

I think we are somewhat in accord-doubt in these situations is a good thing, IMO. There is no downside to acknowledging that as humans we are fallible and that our understand of what has been communicated by another can also be fallible. (btw, this is the reason why church documents discussing a dogma aren’t automatically declared to be infallible, even if the dogma under discussion has been said to have been defined infallibly.)

The point I was trying to bring out in asking Jimmy these questions was that to assume that our understanding of what has been taught is as correct as the original teaching runs the risk of presumption. Hence the admonition in Scripture to study, so that any misunderstandings on our part can be corrected before they do us harm.

Merry Christmas to you. 🙂

Catechism of the Catholic Church
2091 The first commandment is also concerned with sins against hope, namely, despair and presumption:
By despair, man ceases to hope for his personal salvation from God, for help in attaining it or for the forgiveness of his sins. Despair is contrary to God’s goodness, to his justice - for the Lord is faithful to his promises - and to his mercy.

I voted yes, I often have doubts, and when I do I pray about them. I tend to keep my doubts between me God and my confessor. I do not dwell on them.
