I left Mass as one angry Catholic today...

Your quotes from De Musica Sacra are spot on. It puts the nail in the coffin for LifeTeen, or at least their music. Like I said, they played the drums extremely loud in a “Christian Rock” genre way. Would this violate what De Musica Sacra lays out?

Also, is De Musica Sacra still binding? I’m assuming it is, but I just want to be sure.
There is no “nail in the coffin for Life Teen, or at least their music.”

Our bishop is the best–a prince of apostles, and he has not forbidden or condemned Life Teen.

Believe me, if Life Teen was not appropriate, or not in keeping with the rubrics, or the least bit irreverent, our bishop would have put a stop to it years ago. He hasn’t.

Sorry, coolduude, but if I have to choose who’s more knowledgeable about liturgy and canon law, and who’s wiser about applying this knowledge–you or my bishop–you’re not gonna win, my friend!

Wow, I feel so sad, because when I read your post I just thought, “This doesn’t seem that bad …” I am so jaded already about liturgical abuse. 😦

A few days ago I attended a Mass where the priest:
  • skipped the Sign of the Cross at the beginning and also skipped the penitential rite completely
  • said in his homily that divorce and birth control is okay, that “Catholics have a problem with guilt” and we should not go to Confession, and that everyone will go to heaven no matter what sins they commit
  • changed pretty much all of the subsequent prayers except the actual words of consecration
  • skipped the Agnus Dei and the “Behold the Lamb of God” completely - after the Our Father he said some totally unrecognizable phrase and then started distributing Communion
It’s time for a letter to the bishop. Honestly. The changes in the Mass are bad enough but what he said in his homily goes completely against Church teaching and we all know it. The priest may be ill, physically and/or mentally, but he has to be stopped.

I wish you luck and I’m sorry this is going on. God bless. 😦

Coolduude,
I am sad that you left mass feeling so angry. Perhaps there were some things the priest didn’t do correctly but love, tolerance and patience for our fellow man are far better than anger and resentment. The priest is human, he made some mistakes - address the mistakes through the appropriate channels if you feel the need but don’t be upset, life is far too short.🙂

Were there any liturgical abuses committed?

😦
As LifeTeen is a legitimate organization in the Catholic Church, like it or not, it would do little good to shotgun complain against anything that is permissible. I would recommend a focus on clear violations of any rubrics and only complain against that. Even the bow at the consecration* might* be justified in the case of some physical limitation on the part of the priest. Changing the words of consecration, or mixing the Mass for Children in parts with a standard Mass is one such abuse. It is easiest to address on topic at a time.

I have attended one LifeTeen out of necessity. I will not go back unless a similar circumstance arises. I see this as the simpliest solution.

Nice if you can.
But, unfortunately, in most places it is a several hour round trip drive to the nearest Latin Mass.
Then I guess I should consider myself lucky 🙂 It takes me about 20-30 min. to get there depending on traffic. A priest from the FSSP says the Mass. The next closest Church from where I live that has the Latin Mass is said by the SSPX which I don’t go to and thats about an 1 1/2 hr. drive.
