First of all I would like to thank all those who responded to this thread. So now let’s get down to the “details”

1.Papal Primacy. Before you all start quoting tons of out of context quotes from the Early Church Fathers let me say that NONE of the early Fathers held to the Primacy of Jurisdiction of the Bishop of Rome. MOST of the Early Fathers DID NOT give Mat 16:18 the Papal Interpretation of this verse. They said that the “Rock” was either Christ Himself or Peter’s confession, not Peter.
In the Canons of the Council of Nicea each Bishop and Patriarch only had jurisdiction in his own See. No Bishop was to interfere in the See of another Bishop, this INCLUDED the Bishop of Rome.
In the beginning the Church was a loosely knit group of semi-independent Congregations under the Apostles and led by men appointed by them and were more or less independent and managed their own local affairs led by a plurality of “Presbyters” (Elders) and Deacons. For example in a recently published book by Peter Lampe “From Paul to Valentinius: Christians at Rome in the First Two Centuries”, an exhaustive ,detailed and painstakingly researched study of the Church in Rome from the time of St. Paul to 200 AD, proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Church in Rome not only was not the “See of Peter” where Peter and his successors ruled the entire “Catholic Church” as the center of a Universal Papacy as we understand it today, Rome did not even have a single Monarchial Bishop who governed even the Church in Rome until the close of the 2cnd Century. Rome was not the exception, the whole concept of a single Monarchial Bishop who governed over a set group of Churches in any geographic area was a slow and gradual development. It came about not by any “Divine Mandate” but rather for practical reasons of organisation and administration and to safeguard the Church from Heresy. Many will cite men like Clement or Ignatius to “prove” their position, but what are the FACTS?The facts are that Clement was not a Bishop, but one of at least twelve “Presbyters” who oversaw the Church in Rome as a plurality. One could say that Clement was the person in charge with communicating with Churches outside of Rome, sort of a “Secretary of External Affairs and Communications”. What about Ignatius? We know very little about the “real” Ignatius except that perhaps he was an educated layman and not a :Bishop. The “letters” attributed to him were written long after his time by a pseudonymous and anonymous author or authors between 250-350 AD. These aren’t the opinions of “Anti-Catholics” but the accepted facts that most Historians agree on. Actually some of them are Catholics.
2.Papal Infallibility: I suggest one reads “Origins of Papal Infallibility 1150-1350: A Study on the Concepts of Infallibility, Sovereignty, and Tradition in the Middle Ages” by Brian Tierny. He is not an “Anti-Catholic crank” but a respected Catholic Historian. Also “How the Pope Became Infallible: Pius IX and the Politics of Persuasion” by August Bernhard Hasler who was a Catholic Historian and a Priest and worked in the Vatican Archives and taught in University.
3.Purgatory: The origins of Purgatory is not Apostolic. Purgatory came from the Pagan world as Christianity spread among the Gentiles. The origins of Purgatory are to found in Graeco-Roman Philosophy and Pagan Mythology. As Christianity spread influences from those Pagan cultures infiltrated into the Church gradually. Even the Jews were affected by this earlier when the Greek Empire spread to Judea. By the time of the Maccabees many Jews had been influenced by these same Philosophical and Pagan ideas. Once this idea of some “Purgatory” began to take hold in Christian circles it snow-balled from there and took on a “Christian Hue” and was boosted by alleged “visions” especially alleged “visions” that Pope Gregory had in the 6th century. The whole tenor of the New Testament and what it says about what Jesus did for us, the Grace of God and Salvation is against any place, state, or process of Purgatory after death. I maintain that the whole concept of Purgatory mocks what Christ accomplished for us.
4.Justification: Anyone who carefully studies this will see that in the OT and NT “Justify” means “to Declare Righteous” not “make Righteous”, especially in St. Paul’s Epistles. St Augustine who did not know Hebrew and did not understand Koine Greek mistranslated “Justify/Justification using the Latin which means to “make Righteous” . It wasn’t until Greek NT manuscripts along with proper lexical studies of those manuscripts in Western Europe in the late 14th and early 15th Century that this error was discovered by Erasmus and other Scholars.

This is just a brief overview of why I cannot accept those Catholic Dogmas, trust I studied this carefully over the last two years because I really do want to know the truth. BTW I am not an “Amateur Armchair Historian”, I am a Historian with a degree in History as well as teaching so I am well acquainted with Historical research, method, and methodology.

Kotex has been going through this problem for many months. This is not the first time he has been on CAF saying he can’t accept the teachings of the Church.

From prior posts and posts he has had on CARM, I feel that maybe he should leave the Church and find one where he is comfortable. Nothing has changed for him since he left and returned. There is really nothing that anyone can say to convince a person of something they don’t believe.

I would make a clean break if I were he and not go to other forums who are so anti Catholic to learn the truth. Try visiting the different denominations until you find the one which suits your needs.

It appears that it is a waste of posters time to try to convince him. Only the Holy Spirit can show a person the truth and only if they have an open heart.

People should just pray for him and let the Lord deal with his search for the truth.

Just as it is impossible to convince most of the protestants who come to CAF, not with an open mind, to accept the Catholic faith, it is also impossible to keep Catholics from leaving the Church.

Kotex has stated on this post and the ones many months ago what he can’t accept and since he appears to be back to square one there really is no reason to keep repeating the same reasons for him to stay within the Church.

Pray that God will bless him and give him peace where ever he feels led.

Yours in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary

Bernadette

Just a footnote to my former post. In all charity I can’t help but feel that Kotex is playing games with us here at CAF. Just as before he is on CARM, a very anti Catholic forum saying the same things he said months ago.

He still claims to be a Catholic over there. I must wonder if he ever was a Catholic. If he truely wants to know the truth why go to such a forum and degrade the beliefs of the Catholic Church? Why not investigate which community of faith best suits his understanding of what his beliefs are?

As I stated in my other post you all are wasting your time and energy as he is already a protestant in belief and appears to be somewhat hostile towards the Catholic Church.

Sooooo, when St. Macrina explained the “refiner’s fire” of the love of God, which burns up all that is not holy in the faithful and never stops burning those who are evil – that’s all Greco-Roman philosophy, because the Greeks and Romans talked so much about their gods in terms of being all-consuming love?

No. They didn’t.

And it was some Greek or some Roman who said that we’d eventually have to pay for our sins to the very last penny?

Oh, wait. That was some Messiah guy named Jesus, whom we’re supposed to listen to. 🙂

It’s a lot more problematic to have the position that Jesus contradicted Himself on the topic of salvation, or that the Gospels are lying about Him saying this, than it is to accept that some kind of purgatorial state exists.

I realize you are a historian and place great worth in what historians have to say, however there is more to this than academic exercise. Think through the implications of this belief.

For justification to be forensic, that is, merely a declaration, that means all of your eternal life and the chances for it are now hinged on something other than your own behavior. Something like “faith alone,” for example.

So if faith alone is what saves you, how envious a position you have. The devil would be wasting his time to ever try and tempt you, since salvation is hinged to faith, not at all what you do. Have faith, then go out an do whatever you want, sin as much as you feel like, since it’s not you who pays for any of it. Doesn’t matter how many you commit or how heinous the sins because justification is merely a declaration.

The end consequences of this idea is that the merit earned by Jesus in dying on the cross is merely thrown over you like a blanket, shielding the “real you” from the eyes of God the Father, such that all He sees when He looks upon you is the purity of His Son. That means everyone ends up equally holy. St. Francis, who spent his life living poverty and charity looks the same to God as the person who never spent a second giving up anything for anyone and never did a charitable act, living a lifetime of sin only to “have faith” at the last second. That person becomes of equal holiness to the Blessed Mother, just on those words of faith? You’ll have to show me where you find those ideas in history that can’t be traced to a doctrine invented by Martin Luther.

Jesus spoke about separating the wheat from the chaff. He also said there are many mansions in His Father’s kingdom. In James it speaks of works being necessary. St Paul talks about persevering to the end.

Why would anyone have to do works or persevere through anything if they are justified by forensic declaration? That declaration must be based on something - and it can’t be works plus remaining in a state of sanctifying grace or else you’re right back in Catholicism. So if not that, what is it you think your justification IS based upon?

I am sorry, but this is not making any sense to me.

Many of you are taking the response: “The Church is NEVER wrong so you must be wrong.” When you say “your understanding is flawed,” you are really saying “we are right and you are an idiot.” It is up to him to find the Truth. If he searches in earnest with zeal, the Lord shall give it to him.

Praying is the answer yes, but so is searching the Scriptures.

Praying is you talking to God and reading is God talking to you. If you only pray or only read, then it is like a one-sided conversation.

Remember that there were wolves amongst the ecclesias of the Apostles when they actually had the wisdom and words of the Apostles! They were spreading false doctrine when the Apostles were alive, so imagine what happened when they had died.

Moses lifted up a brass seraph in the desert that healed the people of the venom from the serpents sent by the wrath of God. This brass seraph was a symbol for Christ. But what happened to it when Hezekiah found people worshipping it? He destroyed and called it a piece of brass. The things of God may be corrupted by the sinfulness of man. Man is fallable and he is even more fallable when he claims infallability. The only thing that is infallable is the Scriptures. Trust in the Word of God. Do not put your trust in men or councils or clergies.
Trust rather in Holy Mother Church, Tradition, Scripture and Magisterium all, the Church founded by Christ.

And seek not to ‘understand’ or overintellectualize as pray to believe and accept, even if you don’t understand, even if only by an act of the will.

**You know darn well that the Magisterial Reformers, IE Luther, Cranmer, Calvin etc, who advocate Sola Fide “Faith Alone” NEVER said that the Biblical Doctrine of Sola Fide and Forensic Justification meant or means that a Christian is now free to SIN all they want. This shows your absolute ignorance of what the Reformers taught. You see they also said that those who Forensically Justified by Faith ALSO are made just and righteous by what follows that Forensic Justification; SANCTIFICATION. In other words those whom God Justifies (DECLARES righteous by FAITH ALONE) He also Sanctifies. One CANNOT be Justified unless they are later Sanctified, one CANNOT have Justification without the Sanctification that follows. Justification are DISTINCT yet INSEPARABLE. **
I suggest you read the Westminster Confession of Faith carefully.

Actually Jesus taught that. Remember the parable of the man who goes out and hires people at different times of the day to work in his vinyard? The man goes early in the morning and hires some people, then around noon hires more and then shortly before quiting time he goes out and hires more workers. When the end of the day came they all got the same wage. The ones hired early in the morning and bore most of the work and heat of the day complained that the workers hired late in the day got the same pay they did. What did the vinyard owner tell them? You all agreed to work for the wage I promised, I am not cheating you, besides its my money I can do with it as I wish. In other words God is not a respecter of persons. ALL the Saved and redeemed are equal in His sight, thats in the Sacred Scriptures as well.

Why? Out of thankfulness for being saved from eternity in Hell after they realise that NOTHING they do, no matter how many “Good Works” they have piled up can save them from the Holy Justice of God who is angry at Sin and cannot stand sin. They realise that they are wretched sinners who deserve God’s wrath and punishment for sin. They realise that the only way they can or will be saved is by giving up their sin-stained Good Works and filty putrid menstrual rags righteousness and totally trusting in Christ Jesus and what He did for them by His Life and Passion and Death for their sins in their place and in their stead, That He took and bore the wrath and punishment of God for their sins and in their place. Then out of gratitude for what God in Christ did for them in their place they live a life of Holinesss and obedience to Him by doing His will by loving God and neighbor. This is the Gospel.

Of course Sacred Scriptures are free from error, but some interpret them at their own destruction. Some people treat Sacred Scripture as a do it yourself book to start a church. Some use it as a history book, while others pick and chose what they like and do not like.
Which Protestant denomination has the truth? Is contraception God’s will? Do women have the right to kill their unborn child? Is Baptism a symbol? Is Christ truly present in the Eucharist? The Father does not believe in multiple choice questions, but only the truth. Please read this quote from Bishop Sheen. I love it when the Catholic Church is the lone voice on contraception! I love it when the Catholic Church is attacked from the inside and out. If it wasn’t, then clearly it would not be Jesus’s Church!

There are not over a hundred people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church—which is, of course, quite a different thing. These millions can hardly be blamed for hating Catholics because Catholics “adore statues;” because they “put the Blessed Mother on the same level with God;” because they “say indulgence is a permission to commit sin;” because the Pope “is a Fascist;” because the Church “is the defender of Capitalism.” If the Church taught or believed any one of these things, it should be hated, but the fact is that the Church does not believe nor teach any one of them. It follows then that the hatred of the millions is directed against error and not against truth. As a matter of fact, if we Catholics believed all of the untruths and lies which were said against the Church, we probably would hate the Church a thousand times more than they do.

If I were not a Catholic, and were looking for the true Church in the world today, I would look for the one Church which did not get along well with the world; in other words, I would look for the Church which the world hates. My reason for doing this would be, that if Christ is in any one of the churches of the world today, He must still be hated as He was when He was on earth in the flesh. If you would find Christ today, then find the Church that does not get along with the world. Look for the Church that is hated by the world, as Christ was hated by the world. Look for the Church which is accused of being behind the times, as Our Lord was accused of being ignorant and never having learned.

Look for the Church which men sneer at as socially inferior, as they sneered at Our Lord because He came from Nazareth. Look for the Church which is accused of having a devil, as Our Lord was accused of being possessed by Beelzebub, the Prince of Devils. Look for the Church which the world rejects because it claims it is infallible, as Pilate rejected Christ because he called Himself the Truth.

Look for the Church which amid the confusion of conflicting opinions, its members love as they love Christ, and respect its voice as the very voice of its Founder, and the suspicion will grow, that if the Church is unpopular with the spirit of the world, then it is unworldly, and if it is unworldly, it is other-worldly. Since it is other-worldly, it is infinitely loved and infinitely hated as was Christ Himself. … the Catholic Church is the only Church existing today which goes back to the time of Christ. History is so very clear on this point, it is curious how many miss its obviousness…"

I really tried, I am being honest here, I really tried, but I just simply cannot accept some Catholic Dogmas. Before anyone criticizes me let me say that I DO understand these Catholic Dogmas, I just simply cannot accept them. I read a lot from all sides, Catholic, Non-Catholic and “neutral”. I read a lot of Catholic Apologists etc. But based on all I have read and studied I simply cannot accept certain Catholic Dogmas **because as far as I can see they do not find any support from **
History or the Biblical witness. They are the following Dogmas:Fundamental problem there is that there is nothing in the Bible that says that all we believe and practice must be have its basis in the Bible.
  1. Papal Primacy AND Jurisdiction
Do you see anywhere a better authority? I certainly don’t. Since Our Lord plainly tells us to take disputes to the Church for authoritative resolution, where else would one go?
  1. Papal Infallibility
Again… where else would that authority and promised guidance lie? It cannot be as the post reformation communities have tried to practice because they have thousands of different sects and all and each of them claim theirs is the inspired interpretation…yet they do not agree, which is what St. Paul would call confusion, hence they cannot be even scripturally correct.
  1. Catholic Soteriology IE the Council of Trent and the Catholic Dogmas and teaching on “Justification”
I firmly believe that the Magisterial Reformation was right on the Doctrine on “Justification” that their position is the Biblical one and that the Council of Trent rejected and anathematized the Biblical and Pauline teaching on Justification.
Since St. Paul is not the only one to write on this topic, it is an error, (even by n-C Sola Scriptura standards) to take his writings out of context from all the many other New Testament scriptures dealing with salvation. Taken in context with them, Trent was correct to condemn the errant teachings of the Reformers and affirm the truth that has been preached for 2,000 years.
  1. Purgatory
I reject Purgatory because it mocks the Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ and what He did for us.
That’s completely wrong. Biblical and Jewish Traditional Beliefs About Purgatory and it in no way mocks the sacrifice of Our Lord on the cross. You wash up before you eat don’t you? Then just the same way, why would one not do so before attending the marriage supper of the Lamb as pointed out in Matthew 22:1-13?🤷
Under these circumstances I don’t see how I can remain in the Catholic Church. My Parish Priest knows I have “issues” with these Dogmas and urges me to stay but I really can’t see myself accepting these Catholic Dogmas in the near future.Let me just re-emphasise that I DO UNDERSTAND those Dogmas, I simply cannot accept them So I ask both the Catholics and non-Catholics to respond and give me your (name removed by moderator)ut/advice etc. What should I do?
Remain, just as your priest has advised, and lay yourself out before the Lord, asking for His guidance and the leading and teaching of the Holy Spirit. Seek the Lord with all your heart and prepare yourself to be obedient to what He shows you.

I believe that this will bring about an epiphany (no pun intended though that is certainly appropriate going into Advent :)) that will affirm your faith forever.

I may seem to some like I have never had to do that, but it was only that openness to His will and the Holy Spirit’s guidance that brought me home to the faith the way I am.
I will remember you at Mass this evening as I renew my consecration to the Lord as one of His mother’s Knights of the Immaculata

Does the one who makes the statement “no man is infallible” faliable? If so then how can that statement be infalliable?

Like Church Militant pointed out there has to be one with authority or else it is utter confussion,Which is exactly what we have outside the Church.

To the OP stay but you should no longer recieve the Eucharist, because you are not in full union with the Church…
Also how is it you can accept the teachings you do accept? Because you alone approved those teachings to be true? Please don’t take this as being harsh just being blunt.

I won’t presume to tell you what you should think. God in His genuine love for man gave him free will. Seeking the truth is commendable but I will caution you against the danger of seeking that truth through ego driven self-will.

St Macarius of Optina said; “it is better to be a sinner with repentance than a righteous man with pride.” It is the same with our spiritual life, it is more beneficial spiritually to be humble and obedient than it is to be correct with arrogance and pride.

Pursue the truth with prayer and humility and God will take care of you. Of that you can be sure. 🙂

Yours in Christ
Joe

And yet the Bereans searched scripture daily and only some of them accepted the gospel from the Apostles’ very mouths. And some Greeks also accepted the gospel without searching scripture. So searching scripture is not, and has never been, a guarantee of discerning truth from falsehood.
That is a fallacy. The Greeks heard the Word through the mouths of the Apostles. The Apostles had and were directed by the Holy Spirit and learned directly from Christ, having seen him. We alas do not have the Apostles, but we do have their words which are the words of God spoken through them. This is the New Testament. We also have the words of God spoken through the prophets of the Old Testament.

“So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter.” 2 Thess 2:15

Also, those of the Bereans were MANY and not just some or a few.

“And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming [thither] went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.” Act 17:10-12

They searched the scriptures and tested Paul’s words and saw that they were true words. The Bereans are set as an example for us to test the words of our teachers. They were strengthened by Scriptures and not hindered by them.

Now I will set this warning by Paul given to Timothy:

“The time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own likings, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths.” 2 Tim 4:3-4

This is a warning to Timothy. This is not concerning Protestants (1500 years later) or Orthodox (1000 years later). This is concerning the people of the body of believers who shall wander into myths and stop listening to the truth which would begin happening in Timothy’s lifetime.

Paul also gives this warning to the Ecclesia of Ephesus in Acts just before he departed:

“Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.” Acts 20:28-31

In Revelations 2, we hear that the head of the Ephesian church hates the teachings of the Nicolaitans, but the head of Pergamos has been swayed by the doctrines of the Nicolaitans. It would seem that this doctrine is pervaying in the churches. Nicolaitans means conquerors of the lay people. I cannot say what this teaching is for certain. No one knows. It is possible that it is the gnostic philosophies of Plato infiltrating the Greek community. It may also be the Judaizers argued so vehemently against by Paul. 2 Pet 2 and Jude seem to be arguing against the Book of Enoch, which was prevalent during the time.

This teaching is attributed to Balaam, who sought to distort the word of God for a profit by going against the Israelites who are a spiritual metaphor for the saints. Thus, it could be that the Nicolaitans sought to make preaching the word of God into a business. What is sure is that Christ hates the teaching and it was infiltrating the body. Going back to Paul’s words, the flock of Ephesus would not be spared. Pergamos was also affected. The other churches also dealt with false teachers. Slowly but surely, false doctrine infiltrated the churches and corrupted them.

Paul warned about it for three years shedding tears, for he knew that the faith and the church would be corrupted. This was a certainty for him and it pained him deeply to tears.

“A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.” Gal 5:9

One error or one false doctrine shall spread through the whole lump and corrupt it all. We use this phrase today: “One bad apple spoils the bunch.” When the lump is leavened, you cannot reuse the lump. You must cut away the leavened part and start with a new lump.

That is a fallacy. The Greeks heard the Word through the mouths of the Apostles. … (etc and so on)

One error or one false doctrine shall spread through the whole lump and corrupt it all. We use this phrase today: “One bad apple spoils the bunch.” When the lump is leavened, you cannot reuse the lump. You must cut away the leavened part and start with a new lump.
Yeah. The problem with that is and always has been that neither you nor I are capable of discerning false doctrine. Hence the need for the Magisterium.

Christadelphians are everywhere spoken against. We are ridden off as a cult and dismissed and unheard. We do not participate in world governments or politics. We are conscientious observers. We are considered fundamentalists as we follow the strict teachings of the apostles as given in Scripture. Every one of us is loving and kind and seeks out his or her own salvation with fear and trembling.

As for Catholic drawing their line to Christ in History, that line is paved with gold and smeared with blood. Their true beginning starts with Constantine when he declared himself the first bishop of Rome. Before him, the various bodies split apart and were corrupted over time with false doctrines. The Catholics were one of these sects who happened to emerge more prominent.

Seeing how those who shall be saved are so few (Peter compares it to the Flood and Sodom and Gommorah), can the Catholics claim to be the true faith with over a billion followers? If it were like the Flood, then only a few of the Catholics alive today would be saved. It seems almost certain with a 1.1 billion population, that at least 1 billion Catholics would perish, if not more. I think a fair estimate would be one out of a million. So, if there were a billion, only 1,000 would be saved. And of seven billion alive in the world, only seven thousand would be saved.

I would be looking for a small body of righteous and loving people who maintain the true doctrine as given by the apostles, the prophets and Christ.

I really tried, I am being honest here, I really tried, but I just simply cannot accept some Catholic Dogmas. Before anyone criticises me let me say that I DO understand these Catholic Dogmas, I just simply cannot accept them. I read a lot from all sides, Catholic, Non-Catholic and “neutral”. I read a lot of Catholic Apologists etc. But based on all I have read and studied I simply cannot accept certain Catholic Dogmas because as far as I can see they do not find any support from History or the Biblical witness. They are the following Dogmas:
  1. Papal Primacy AND Jurisdiction
  2. Papal Infallibility
  3. Catholic Soteriology IE the Council of Trent and the Catholic Dogmas and teaching on “Justification”
  4. Purgatory
I firmly believe that the Magisterial Reformation was right on the Doctrine on “Justifiaction” that their position is the Biblical one and that the Council of Trent rejected and anathemised the Biblical and Pauline teaching on Justification.

I reject Purgatory because it mocks the Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ and what He did for us.

Kotec,
I believe Church Militant has given you the best answer.
I would slow down, stop trying to eat all the food in the restaurant at once. Give the Holy Spirit time, you will at peace.

That is a fallacy.
What is my fallacy? That only some (as opposed, obviously, to all) Bereans who searched the scriptures accepted the gospel? That some Greeks who did not search the scriptures also accepted the gospel? That searching scripture is not and has never been a guarantee of discerning truth from falsehood?

I ask again, where is my fallacy?

You sound like hippies to me.

Do you really believe if he searches in earnest with zeal the Lord shall give him “the truth”? What does this say about “the truth”? How do you explain all those holding so many divergent “truths”? Do you do it by saying they didn’t seek earnestly and with zeal? Then who holds the truth? Or do you not believe in absolute truth thereby enabling all of us to hold our own truths? Either the Pope is the successor to Peter etc or he is not. Jesus is the Son of God or his in not. There is a hell or there is not. These are not things where we can hold different “truths” and both be correct. One of us would be wrong whether we know it or not.
What, I think, would be useful–would be to discuss each issue with the OP to understand how he studies and understands the same Scripture, history, and early writings and comes to his conclusions–conclusions that are different than ours.

Praying is the answer yes, but so is searching the Scriptures. Yes, but see Acts 8:28-31 "…Seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. The Spirit said to Philip, ‘Go and join the up with that Chariot.’ Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and said, ‘Do you understand what you are reading?’ He replied, 'How can I, unless someone instructs me? So he invited Philip to get in and sit with him.
Or this from Peter regarding Paul’s letters: “I…n them there are some things hard to understand that the ignorant and unstable distort to their own destruction…” 2 Peter 3:16

You need someone to help you interpret scripture.

Praying is you talking to God and reading is God talking to you. If you only pray or only read, then it is like a one-sided conversation. You believe that God can only talk to you through the Scripture?

Remember that there were wolves amongst the ecclesias of the Apostles when they actually had the wisdom and words of the Apostles! They were spreading false doctrine when the Apostles were alive, so imagine what happened when they had died.
This is why Apostolic succession is so important. This is why Paul and Peter and the early Church fathers exhort us to listen to those installed above us and this is what so many of us have a hard time doing. “Likewise, you younger members, be subject to the presbyters…” 1 Peter 5:4-5 At some point – many just ignored their presbyters and made themselves into a presbyters–these are who we need to watch out for.

Aren’t you in a way asserting the infallability of your opinion right here? We put our trust in Jesus Christ and all that he revealed to his Apostles which has been passed down through the centuries–and that is Scriptural–unlike your claim that “The only thing that is infallable is the Scriptures” That is simply you asserting an opinion that you cannot prove from Scripture. Jesus promised: “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it” Mat 16:12-13 Now we can debate the meaning of “church” but it is the Church and her teachings that Christ protects and guides regardless of the failing of its members. /quote]

See blue above.
Peace,
Mark
