Dear Bulldog,
I don’t think you can boil down everything to communion in the hand, but you do make a good point. I do receive in the hand myself, and I think some priests like giving it that way because it’s not so pleasant to put it on the tongue.

There are a lot of societal factors that are affecting people’s attitudes though. Look at the changes in the past 50 years, with the dramatic increase in the influence of the mass media on folks, with it’s secular, consumeristic agenda. The sexual revolution, BCP, television fastfood generation, women in the workforce, etc… So, I don’t think you can blame communion in the hand for all the ills of the church.

But, universal communion on the tongue would avoid some problems, such as this.

I glanced up after receiving communion during Ash Wednesday and noticed a man walking to the right, with his hand open. I thought he was about to consume the host by taking it in his other hand, but instead he closed his fist. This occured before he got to the lady with the chalice. I briefly lost sight of his hand as he passed the chalace, but I’m pretty sure he didn’t consume the host. I watched as he went down the aisle and his fist was still clenched. I noticed as he left the church, while still inside, he had his jacket on and hands in his pockets.

Now, this guy is not a stranger. He volunteers as a gardener for the parish. I’ve talked to him and his wife before and had coffee with them. I called a friend of mine and told her the story. I said that I had once seen a woman from our parish (who is a consecrated virgin) at a daily Mass at another parish where we both go, put up 3 fingers and get additional hosts, obviously to bring to the sick because that woman does that as her ministry. I was wondering if there was a possiblity that he had a previous arrangement to do this. She wanted me to call Father and discuss it. I was going to, but couldn’t get through, then asked her if she would like to. She is more proactive than me.

I haven’t heard back from her, so I’m not sure if she’s called him yet. My priest is rather unpredictable, I really didn’t want to deal with him. He seems rather solemn on Liturgy though.

So, what do you all think? I’m 99% sure he palmed that host and took it out of the church. My friend says that at our parish, the normal thing would be to get extra communion for the sick after Mass and take it in a special container.
In my parish, the priest calls up people taking communion to the sick and home bound. They all have a pix that he places the communion in and then we all lift our right hands as bestows his blessing. Even if he did have an arrangement to take it to someone that does not seem like the way it should be done. I would definitely at least talk to the priest about it.

Maybe he has a chapel in his house, and wanted the Blessed Sacrament in the chapel.

I realize this violates Canon Law, but Canon Law has been violated in church on Sunday mornings with the full appoval of the priests.

The priests are suppose to be enforcing Canon Law. However, they disobey Canon Law and encourage other people to disobey Canon Law. One cannot expect the laity to behave better the priests who are suppose to be setting a good example.

Also, many priests lack respect for the Blessed Sacrament. They build grungy little rooms called eucharistic chapels. They put the tabernacle in this grungy room. They know no one will visit the Blessed Sacrament before Mass, during Mass, after Mass or at any other time. These priests show that they despise and hold in great contempt the very Person of Jesus Christ Himself.

If the priests hold Jesus Christ in contempt and despise Him, the laity will also hold Jesus Christ in contempt and despise Him.

Your sujective choice of words, like “grungy”, and your disrespect for your priests show where you are at. Try reading The first document published by the 2nd Vatican Council ( “The Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy”) which explains clearly what is behind the tabernacle issue.Section 11A states," It is recommended that, as far as possible, the tabernacle be placed in a chapel distinct from the middle or central part of the church"

I think the word grungy does describe the room where the tabernacle is put in mqny churches One church even put the tabernacle in the back of the coat closet. Maybe a liturgist calls that repecting Jesus Christ, but I don’t.

It is a violation of canon law for lay people to preach sermons at Mass. When a priest allows and encourages that to happen, he is showing he has no respect for the laws of the church.

Taking communion on the tongue does not prevent abuse. People can immediately remove it from their mouth before it is swallowed. We need more reverence and vigilance in our catechesis about the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist, beginning with our schoolchildren.

Pray, on this one all the time!

After reading some of these posts, I’m concerned that I’ve been doing the wrong thing. Maybe I’ve been wrong but here’s what I do -I take the Holy Eucharist in one hand and then drink wine out of the chalice and on the way back to my pew I put the Host in my mouth. I do this because it’s hard to have the Host in my mouth and then drink the wine. I’m afraid the Host will somehow come out of my mouth into the chalice.

Blessings,
Shannin

Traditionally, you receive the Consecrated Host first, followed by the Blood of Christ. But if this is difficult for you, I suggest receiving the Blood first, and then get back into line for the Eucharist. There is no risk of you chipping off a piece of Jesus’ body by switching hands etc. This would be neglect not intentional abuse. Talk to your pastor for help on this one too. And pray always.

If you see this situation occur, feel free to immediately follow the man and ask him if he has consumed the host yet. As Christians, it is our duty to protect our savior. If it is someone who is validly receiving communion, they will understand that.
Yes, I agree. If I saw this happen I’d follow the person and ask him to consume the host. Fortunately, at our parish when I’ve seen it happen someone usually beats me to it.

My dear friend,
You said (and I quote)
"I briefly lost sight of his hand as he passed the chalice, but I’m pretty sure he didn’t consume the host."

You can do absolutely nothing. You are acting on what you thought happened. You have no proof that any sacrilage has occured. So before you go casting seeds of doubt or detraction be very careful and pray about what you considering.

Unless you have 110% solid proof please do not entertain any thoughts of what you though happened. Satan may be using you to disturb the person in question.

Take my advice and do nothing but pray for all concerned including yourself.

99% sure is ‘close but no cigar’. If you think 99% sure is good enough to go on then consider this:
**If 99% is good enough then:
**

12 newborns will be given to the wrong parents daily.

114,500 mismatched pairs of shoes will be shipped each year.

** 18,322 pieces of mail will be mishandled each hour.**

2,000,000 documents will be lost by the IRS this year.

2.5 million books will be shipped with the wrong covers.

** 315 entries in Webster’s Dictionary will be misspelled.**

20,000 incorrect drug prescriptions will be written this year.

880,000 credit cards in circulation will turn out to have incorrect card holder information on their magnetic strips.

103,260 income tax returns will be processed incorrectly during the year.

5.5 million cases of soft drinks produced will be flat.

** 291 pacemaker operations will be performed incorrectly.**

3065 copies of tomorrow’s Wall Street Journal will be missing

A Host was found on the floor of our Church. It was discovered before a Saturday morning Novena which was dedicated to all the unborn babies that have been aborted. I don’t know how it happened, whether it was an accident or intentional.
