Here is the scoop…Hubby and I have 4 sons and I’m on my 5th pregnancy with twins…They are boys, too. I’m already 35 weeks and feel grateful for so many wonderful things in my life. Before aynone begins to bash me about “well, there are many people who wish they had kids…” or “be grateful for what you have…” I just want to vent and say that I feel gender dissapointment…I mean 6 kids and all males…I can’t come to understand WHY? Yes, I’ve tried 4 times for a girl and they’ve all been boys. I love my boys and feel that I am not young anymore to keep trying for a girl. I like the idea of adopting a girl, but since I don’t have a problem with having children of my own (atleast up to now) I feel that I can keep trying…plus I’ve heard that it’ll probably be much harder to adopt specifically a girl, well I guess I can just keep trying for a girl…It’s frustrating…I was told they were boys since week 17 and that totally crushed me. I kind of got over it, but every once in a while it gets to me specially people’s comments “Oh! Not one girl?!” “All boys!?”

I see little girls everywhere except at home and often wonder…“How is that possible???”

Ok, you can bash me all you want now (I forgive you because you might not have a clue as to what I’m feeling since you might not have felt it before…EVER…), but no matter what happens, I will still want a girl always and forever if I never get to have one… 🤷

:’( It’s like a DREAM just died and I can’t bring it to life. I feel like I will never feel what it’s like to have a daughter…I’ve been mourning this since I found out the twins were boys…I love kids and love my boys, but I WANT A GIRL or 2…

P.s. I even went to confession for this and was told that it’s ok to question God once in a while…That he forgives us because he loves us and wants to make us understand someday WHY? why things happen :’(

Ok…there…I vented a bit…now I would like to read your wise comments (not hurtful ones).
I can understand your desire for a daughter but take hope – you will have 6 sons. They will grow up and someday provide you with a granddaughter. And believe me - having granddaughters and grandsons are the greatest blessings in the world.

Raise those fine boys of yours and enjoy them to pieces. The little girls will be there for your waiting arms.

Yes! I look so much forward to that! Thank you! 😃

Wife and I have three girls. I wouldn’t have it any other way. She, however, sometimes wishes we’d had a son, mostly when she’s watching a cute little 18 month old boy rumble around.

I find that I only get nostalgic about these kinds of things (son I didn’t have; car I should not have bought; guitar lessons I should have stuck with…) when I’m not living in the present.

When I AM living in the present, I find it almost impossible to be anything other than grateful.

Congrats to the OP on the new babies! Before long, you’ll have daughters-in-law and granddaughters and you’ll never look back! You won’t have time!!
Thanks! I feel the same way…Like I had mentioned before, they are just moments in life that make me wonder the “How would it be if I had a daughter?” I’m sure it would be so awesome! 😃

I have to admit that I’m truly beginning to feel sorry/sad for those few who attacked in this thread. Their lives just seem sad and with deep issues 😦 My heart goes out to them…Sorry for exploding but like I said before…we don’t know each other and first impressions are always last.

God Bless.

Yes, the deep issue of my life starting as a third “try” for the desired gender. Is it an issue that destroyed my life, and I am a terrible sad person with no life? No, but the pain was deep enough to take the time to type out a response to you so that you could try to see the potential damage to your sons. Not to “attack” you, but to speak up for them.

How do I know my dad really, really wanted a son? Do you think he told me this? No, of course not, and to this day, my mom insists she was 100% happy with a third girl, and that was exactly what she wanted. So how did I know?

Well, there were several comments from other family members over the years, and there was the parental interactions with my brother and I (we were close in age) in which my dad couldn’t quite hide his joy over getting to do “guy stuff”, where the stuff I wanted to do was “boring” There was not overt favoritism, but the strong fact my dad enjoyed much more getting to do the boy stuff he had waited so long for, than spending girl time with his THIRD daughter. The joy he had in interacting with my brother was missing with me. He could not hide it, no matter how “fair” he was. Why am I dredging up decades old pain? It hurt enough to tell you about it.

I did not write this post so you would feel sorry for me, but so you could learn from my pain, and how your attitude could effect your lovely sons, especially if you get your “wish”. Don’t feel sorry for me. Use my pain to reflect on how your feelings affect others, even if that isn’t your intention. I find this response terribly condescending.

I’m sorry, exactly where have I said that she is ungrateful or “told her off” for her *feelings. I find some of the responses ironic/hypocritical in this thread…you know, how she is allowed *to vent her feelings, but when someone comes along who “genuinely” feels differently they should just shut up. Thanks for understanding my feelings. I’ll remember next time that onlt certain feelings are allowed.
You might want to remember something that is largely forgotten in our culture: While it is good to find a place to express our feelings, there are times and places that are more and less appropriate. No one is stopping anybody from starting a thread in which they, as someone who is childless, talks about how hard it is to hear parents who complain about __________, whatever that is.

There are posts on this thread that do not stop at expressing grief at hearing people with many children wish for a different gender mix, but go on to berate the OP for feeling as she does, from those who believe they have it worse. That is not only hi-jacking her thread, but it doesn’t help. For instance, if a woman who could not get pregnant expressed that she sometimes grieved that she could never give birth herself, even though she was able to adopt as many beautiful and wonderful children as she could have ever borne herself, would it be helpful to berate the woman for her ingratitude for her adopted children? Would it be right to presume that she’d ever let on having these feelings to her children? I don’t think so. 🤷

Well hopefully that will make you feel better about having those thoughts of having a girls every once in awhile, which is nothing compared to what some people say.

Give yourself a break, you are still pregnant with twins. Being pregnant is a blessing but as your already know it is also a challenge and you are carrying two little people. Of course you are going to feel like you do always wanting a girl, but I think in the year to come, the want for a girl will lesson at least a little.

Your boys won’t be hurt by hearing you always wanted a girls, especially when you have so many of them. I work at an all boys school and know many mothers with all boys. I was also raise knowing boys who had all boy families of 8-9 boys and all of those mothers in the end loved having all boys, even the ones that want girls in the beginning. You feel how you feel and God understands.

In time you will start to see all the drama, back stabbing, and flat out meanness girls can do to each other. Nothing has been harder than seeing my daughter hurt by her friends and the mothers looking the other way. My boys seem to take care of those things themselves and they also watch over me. Just remember you will always have an army around you that will love you beyond words and defend you to the end. I hope you have a village of little granddaughters that won’t come with all the drama.

Good luck having those twin boys.👍

The original post does not strike me as an occasional wistful thought. The OP comes across as genuinely and consistently wishing for her desired gender, and refers to four of her sons as “four tries for a girl”. I cannot see how that would not have a negative effect on at least one of her sons.

My prayer for the OP is that she will one day be able to honestly say “At one time, I yearned for a girl, but after having son and incredible son, and falling in love over and over again, my heart was so full, it was no longer important.”**

This is a very good reason to never answer when people ask if you do or don’t want to get pregnant or do or don’t want a girl or a boy or twins or someone who looks like your parents, or whatever you secretly hope for. The time can come and you can get exactly the opposite of what you thought you wanted, you can actually feel the great delight of finding that you are thrilled to have exactly the child you have, and some idiot will feel the need to tell the child what you “really” felt!

I don’t know that it will help but I will tell you that my father had many sons before me, my parents and my lone sister (the oldest) were* very* happy to finally get their second girl, and my dad still enjoyed doing guy stuff with my brothers instead of spending time with me. He showed me that he loved me in many ways, but I don’t think he realized that all the time I got to spend with my mom did not mean I didn’t long to spend time with him, too.

You bring up a very important point, then: A father who sees his wife enjoying time doing “girl” stuff with their daughters should not assume that his daughters don’t pine to spend time sharing their special interests with him, too. The truth is that fathers who show an interest in their daughters leave their daughters far less vulnerable to smooth-talking men who would prey upon a girl’s natural desire for both female and male affection. Likewise, boys like it when their mothers spend some time reveling in what they (that is, each of the boys) brings to the family. It helps the child feel like a valuable person in his or her own right, and that is a great gift. It also helps greatly in keeping the child from falling in with the wrong crowd, because the child is less needy for approval.

I think maybe that those who don’t get this have not lived as the lone female in a household that is truly overflowing with males: more than two sons and no daughters. In my experience, it is something that the wife/mom either loves or else finds to be something of a trial, something for which she has to find outside compensation by seeking out some serious female company. The same goes for husbands/fathers in a house full of only girls. There are men in that position who can’t believe how lucky they are, and others who feel as if they are seriously outnumbered. It is not quite the same thing as a man who never got a daughter or a woman who never got a son.

Do you see the difference? It is not that the mother isn’t happy with her sons. She can be proud as punch and simply ecstatic over every single one of them, that isn’t the point! Maybe it is wanting just one person who understands from experience what the big deal is about leaving the seat down when you’re finished in the bathroom. Maybe just one person who doesn’t turn inside out like a slug in salt at evidence that some people in this world have menstrual cycles and wear different underwear. Maybe just one person who loves cute little things just because they are cute and little and who instinctively knows why anyone ever went to the trouble to invent lace. It is wanting someone in your household who immediately “gets” you.

I have only sons, but I grew up with a lot of males, so I’m fine with it. I guess I’m in the camp that loves lots of boys. I know lots of women who have a harder time with it, though. The best solution is probably to have a regular girls night out with some other mothers who have lots of boys. You’ll die laughing and come home feeling a lot better!

Have you considered that your dad was 100% happy to have you a daughter? He says so, your mom says so yet you believe otherwise b/c of vague comments from other people and the natural way he interacted with the different sexes in his life? Reading this only confirms what I mentioned earlier, that it doesn’t matter what the mother feels inside, people are going to believe what they want to believe and that will largely be influenced by the comments others make (which are not a reflection of me and my feelings) and the natural differences between the sexes.

We can’t win. No matter what I think or feel, strangers even, will come up and make comments to my children. It doesn’t matter if I had set out and planned to have all boys, they will get this impression that I was “trying for a girl” no matter what.

I am also 1 of 3 girls in a row and my parents finally got a boy on their fourth. Yeah, my dad coached sports and never did anything “girly” with me. That’s because males and females are different.

And really this is just another reason why it can be hard for moms of all one sex. We, and our kids, have to shoulder the opinions of so many other people regardless of how we truly feel. Because it IS an anomaly and people DO take notice. I

What was the intent of the original post? To vent? To gain sympathy? To make yourself feel better about an attitude you admit you went to confession for? Or to ask for people’s honest opinions about your reaction to your situation? You asked for people’s wise (not hurtful) comments. It seems from your responses that any comment that does not give you permission to feel the way you want to feel, or asks you to consider how your children may feel about your attitude you view as hurtful or an attack. It seems like the reason for posting was simply to have others validate your feelings.
I come at this from the perspective of someone married to a man who grew up in a family of six boys, the last of which were twins. My husband has deep, deep wounds related to his mother’s reaction to her unfulfilled desire for a daughter. Did she go around telling them “I wish you had been a girl”? No. But it came through in subtle ways. My husband very much feels like he (as number four of six) was the fourth failed attempt at a daughter. The pain and rejection he feels, even to this day is very, very real. And so is the pain of his brothers.
The comments you made in your original post specifically “I mean 6 kids and all males…I can’t come to understand WHY? Yes, I’ve tried 4 times for a girl and they’ve all been boys.” And “I can just keep trying for a girl…It’s frustrating. I was told they were boys since week 17 and that totally crushed me” “I’ve been mourning this since I found out the twins were boys” come across as the comments of someone who is deeply dissatisfied with the gender of her children, not just someone who as another poster suggested wants “one person who understands from experience what the big deal is about leaving the seat down when you’re finished in the bathroom.” I’m not sure if you are truly dissatisfied, but the things you said in your original post come across that way.
Your children pick up on this even if you’ve never verbalized it. If you had gone to your ultrasound appointment and found out you were having a girl your reaction would have been one of celebration, instead as you say, you’ve been mourning. Your children could not have helped but notice this.
To say that other posters, who point out the feelings of your children, are attacking you, is in my opinion, unfair.
One of the reasons most women want both sons and daughters is so that their children will not end up feeling like your husband feels. You see, we can’t win for losing. Did you ever think that parents want both because they care about their kids and want them to experience growing up in a household with both sexes. But of course, all the blame gets placed on mom even if we have no idea whether she showed the feelings she had in heart after an ultrasound. I notice one thing is the same in all of these stories – the mother/father never did anything outright to make her child feel that he or she was unwanted b/c of their gender. It’s the situation of the anomaly of many children of the same sex that makes it harder for both parents and children. Of course, the parents will be blamed in the end regardless. It seems that some are missing out on the facts that the sex of a child really does make a difference in so many ways.

Everyone ask why at one time or another, usually out of selfish feelings, no one is more at fault than another. The OP has never said she is proud of the way she feels, but she does feel it for now. She is being honest and I would bet most parents with single sex children if honest wanted both boys and girls.

Like said I wanted all boys because I am much more “male” like, into sports, hating shopping, fashion, make up, girls nights out. Give me a football game and I am happy. My daughter is very girly but she knows I love everything about her and I feel completely blessed she is my daughter. She is very confident in herself and understands I wanted all boys but that completely changed the second I saw her. My husband, never having a sister, went to shop for her first bra, get her ears pierced, to look for dresses and shoes and they had a blast together. The OP obviously has a lot of living left to do raising her boys and who knows how she will feel after these twins are born or 10 years from now. Boys don’t let those things get to them, especially if it isn’t repeated all the time

I do feel more for those who wanted a child but could not have one of their own. Those women are missing carrying a child and feeling it move inside them. I also feel for those who have lost a child because it doesn’t matter how many you have, losing a child has to be the worst pain anyone can face. We all need to focus on our blessing as much as we can with each new day, but we are all going to have moments of asking why because we are all human.

You are right, on a certain level I’m “never going to get it”. That was not the point of posting, that I “got” the OP’s pain…I admit, I don’t get it. I’m in the camp of lost baby mamas that feels overwhelming grateful for take home babies of either gender. I cannot relate to how the OP feels.

I can relate to how the children of the OP MIGHT feel. That was what I was trying to share. Of course she loves her sons. My parents loved me, as well. I never doubted that they loved me. I just know that there was a delight my dad had in a son that I could never match no matter what I did. This is from the perspective of A CHILD. I’m trying to explain what that felt like, and keep getting shot down, like i don’t know what I’m talking about.

Did the OP state that in her original post? No, she did not say “ I’m sad because I don’t have a daughter and I want my boys to experience the joys of growing up with brothers and sisters”. She said she had tried four times for a girl and instead got boys and that she was crushed that her twins were both boys.
I’m going off of what she said in her original post, not what she may or may not think in her head or truly feel in her heart. All I can respond to is what was written. I cannot judge (and it would be wrong to do so) what is in the OP’s heart. What I can do is respond to what she wrote, which I’ve done.
And on the other issue you brought up, I can assure you that while my mother-in-law may not have verbalized her desire for a daughter or rejection of her sons, it was absolutely felt by ALL 6 boys and had far reaching consequences, beyond what I am willing to share in this public internet forum. Consider for a moment if my mother-in-law never verbalized her dissatisfaction and the profound impact her feelings still had on her sons, what reading a post like this might do to the OP sons if they ever discovered this in the future.
I think I can take a “Suck it up, mom!” from my kids if they ever feel that I prefer a female over a male…“It’s not my fault or yours…it is just what it is…” and laugh it out. OR “Too bad, so sad, mom…” 😛

P.s., I said about trying 4 times for a girl when people ask “Are you going to keep trying for a girl??”…sorry, I messed up on my original post and realize why so many got offended. It is not an honest answer. It is just to make people understand that I did not chose to have 4 boys in a row…It just happened. I am pretty busy with 4 kiddos and find myself not proof reading and I can see how it can be interpreted in so many ways. My post would’ve been much longer…sigh.

I think you know what you are talking about. My mother was messed up her whole life because her father adored her younger sister more than his other children. My mother went on to make her sons much more important that her 3 daughters. Plus she made it very clear to me that she was done having children until she accidentally got pregnant with me 8 years after that forth child; BTW she had 2 girls and 2 boys before me. My family was always open about how upset everyone was when they found out I was coming and my brothers have never wanted anything to do with me. Life can be painful, more so for some than others, but that is why we need to focus on the good we have not what we don;t have as much as possible. Holding on to what we don;t have only brings sadness and pain, but every heals in their own time.

I see your point Gwendolen. It is not pain…it was a moment in my lifetime, which I know will come back again sometime. I hope in the far far future. Some comments from people when they see me with my 4 boys like “Awww, are you going to keep trying for the girl?” or give me a weird stare like if I’m a weirdo for having all boys. If those are said to me in a time where I’m feeling down (like hormonal during this pregnancy), I got to admit that they do get to me. Rarely, they don’t get to me. I’m only human and the day I posted and began this thread was one in which I was not feeling well emotionally. Crazy, right? Yeah, I think so now, but not when I was feeling what I was feeling at the moment. The ups and downs of pregnancy. Go figure! 😛 I’m new here and beginning to learn how sensitive some people can be. Including myself.

Don’t take it personally. You can never word things right for everyone, there will always be someone sensitive and in pain when they post their response. If it helps, just try to imagine 6 girls PMSing at the same time or for that matter how much drama one girl PMSing can do to a entire household.
