@Niblo have you ever tried Patsy Cline? I don’t know how anyone could object to Patsy Cline.
Know the name very well, but she was never one to listen to. My favourite American female singer by a country mile was Janis Joplin (not C&W, of course). Like Jonny Cash, and Dylan…but the best by a dozen country miles was Presley. Not a great fan of his movies…but his Vegas and Hawaii performances were awesome.

I think if I had to pick a favorite American female vocalist, it would be Billie Holliday or Ella Fitzgerald. I’m also partial to Karen Carpenter.

Also, Presley is considered by many a country and rock star.

To me, country is like a very potent spice that you only reach for when it’s absolutely necessary.

Yer woman’s gotta done leave you.
Then throw in something about your truck and your big yaller dog and yer good to go.
what, no rain and not drunk?

🤔
The melody of country tunes uses the tonal scales with some blues scale notes.
If memory serves, Hank William Jr. said that (Cole Porter? Louis Armstrong?) told his father that, “Country ain’t nothin’ but the white man’s blues.” How tightly the two are intertwined is horrific to certain bigots (in both), who have no choice but to deny this reality.

Not to surprising, given how much roots it has in Scots-irish folk music . . .
Don’t forget the woman’s point of view.
One of the curiosities is that men’s and women’s C&W are overlapping but distinguishable forms. Most of us like both, but they just ain’t the same . . .

The PBS series is great, and includes long enough clips to be interesting.

And of course, we can’t conclude without

Sure… Angelina works the breakfast bar in downtown San Jose
Where I stop in to
For the first cup of the day.
And if she has the time
she’ll stop and talk to me
Toss her hair and smile
In that Mexicans way…

Angelina ballerina
When we lock eyes
Do you see what see
Angelina do you ever think
About you and me

Kinda like a favourite enema 😄

Billie Holliday and Ella…oh yes, to which I would add Peggy Lee. Karen Carpenter I only ever heard as one of the group, never as a soloist. Good sound, though. And add Louis Armstrong…and Spike Jones & the City Slickers!

Although she’s not American, I always rather liked Canadian country singer Anne Murray.

@(name removed by moderator) does your father like Buck Owens?

What a beautiful, classic Irish voice.

Would he happen to be a fan of Dolores Keane?

Judy Collins got advice before she wrote her first song, which is to tell a story by writing a beginning, a middle, and an end.

BTW, did you know that before he became famous, Leonard Cohen was contemplating becoming a country singer? Now that would have been…interesting.

Or fellow guitar fans. Chet is the guitar playing king.

Klezmer is “happy music” to me. I like it, and have some saved on Pinterest. 😊

And may Harold Reid, with his booming bass voice and his unforgettable alter ego (Lester “Roadhog” Moran), rest in peace. I’ve been listening to all my Statler Brothers CDs. You don’t hear quartets like this and the Oakridge Boys anymore.
