It’s been a while since I’ve been to a Church in the EU, however, when I went to Mass in Germany, half the congregation it seemed did not receive. That was surprising. And to my knowledge it wasn’t “bring a Lutheran day” or anything like that.

Obviously, there’s a big problem with people taking Communion when they probably should not be in the US.

For me, the real question is why was there a lay person distributing communion?

Is it common for the laity to self-communicate the precious blood?

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are permitted to offer the Chalice containing the Blood, just as they may offer the Host. This is not-self communicating. Self-communicating would be if the chalice were left somewhere (say on the altar) and communicants took and drank from it themselves.

You bet!! Confession lines are short or not at all and Communion lines are long and full. Someone once said we must all think we’re saints. Most real Saints went to Confession often !! God Bless, Memaw

I haven’t seen any reference to self-communicating.

I second this. I wonder what needs to be done for people to know what the Eucharist really is, and how essential confession is for us.

If you come up with an answer let us all know! That is THE question (or at least in the top 10) for today’s new Evangelization! 😃

Amen to that! 👍

I have seen this done many times in rural Ireland. The priest tells folk they may partake of they want. In the cathedral here, the congregation goes up in 2 lines and then to the side if they want the chalice. Always LEMs at the sides except at the Friary where it is a friar. Other issue for me is a simple health one. immune system is down and a common cup cursorily wiped with the same cloth is inviting disaster.
