I think is it disingenuous of you to post the content of the private message and act “shocked” that someone would suggest this to you. I’ve suggested it publicly. It is even further disingenuous to lead people to believe the root of the person’s suggest is “just” that you are Lutheran.
Perhaps some facts would assist people:
(a) You teach a religion class. You teach lessons that you can agree with, and you leave the classroom and let the principal teach any lesson that you have an objection to. That is a very poor example for students-- it undermines their faith. Their own teacher doesn’t agree with what is being taught and has to leave the room!
(b) When such occasions occur, you not only leave the room and let the principal teach the topic, but you then subsequently answer questions on why your religion teaches differently-- more undermining of the Catholic faith.
(c) You are in an invalid marriage with a quasi-practicing Catholic who refuses to convalidate your marriage. Public scandal.
(d) You are in a school that openly encourages non-Catholics to go through First Holy Communion and your own son-- baptized Lutheran-- went through First Holy Communion in the Catholic Church with neither of his parents intending to raise him Catholic while you proudly boast that he will go through Lutheran FHC and Confirmation in the Eighth Grade.
So, yes, if you were teaching in a Catholic school in which I had a child, I’d be raising holy hell about it. Of course, with the numerous whacko things you’ve described going on in your Catholic school, I’d probably be raising holy hell about the school in general at the diocesan level.
As to whether it was “right” for someone to send you this private message-- I think it was his Catholic duty to point out that maybe teaching religion at a Catholic school when you are an actively practicing Lutheran who cannot in good conscience teach what the Catholic Church teaches is not a good idea.
I also think he/she could have chosen better delivery.
I’m sure you are a fine language arts teacher, and a fine person in general. At least you seem to be here on CAF. I disagree with a non-Catholic teaching a Catholic religion class at a Catholic school. Shouldn’t be too surprising. I would disagree with a non-Lutheran religion teacher teaching Lutheran religion classes at a Lutheran school too.
Ultimately, it’s your choice what you do and your schoool’s choice to employ you. I think your school, in general, does a disservice to Catholic children based on the things you have posted here. But, if their parents don’t seem to care there isn’t much those of us here can do about it.
