Sorry, I got off the original question regarding Purgatory, and here my point is that you are simply not going to have much success if you tell people who have believed in it for 30-40-50 plus years, to stop believing in it because it’s not part of our tradition.

Same as always Malphono 🙂 Rosary, belief in Purgatory, Fatima, Sacred Heart, Immaculate Heart of Mary, Stations of the Cross, etc.
I want to express, as someone who was raised Roman Catholic and is planning on becoming a Maronite priest, I see no reason in practicing these traditions and point of views, as long as one is very well versed in his/her own traditions. There are 5 Liturgical Rites, each one with similar and very different practices to each other and with similar and different points of view on theology and spirituality - all these compliment the others traditions. That being said, I am for de-latinization of the Qurbono/Qurbana/Divine Liturgy/Holy Mystery and for liturgical matters. But I see no issue(s) with an Eastern Catholic using these practices, the same way I see no issue(s) in Western Catholics using Eastern practices- as like I said as long as they are well versed in their own tradition, for instance my mother would like to get a prayer rope, there are Western Catholics that do the prayer of St. Ephrem during Great Lent and some Western Catholics have Eastern icons, personally I see no issue in this. I hope this helps! 🙂

Well, I’m lucky, then. Haven’t had these occur at the Byzantine church I’ve been going to.
At least for the Ruthenians, from experience as a “cradle” Byzantine to current date:

Rosary = yes

Fatima = no (we have our own Eastern European appearances & miraculous icons to dwell upon)

Purgatory = depends on generation / when you were were initially catechized, but we never stopped praying for the faithful departed

Sacred Heart = maybe, again depending on generation - Moleben now “refreshed” as the Moleben to Jesus, Lover of Mankind (oh, forgive me - “Lover of us all”)

Immaculate Heart of Mary = no

Stations of the Cross = not in a long while now; same for Lenten Devotions - Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is now the Lenten norm (Wednesdays and/or Fridays)

True, but through adult catechesis, it is at least possible to give them an appreciation for the Eastern perspective. Why bother? So that the younger generations can be encouraged at all levels to learn the genuine traditional views, without being “corrected” by parents and grandparents. The cycle has to be broken at some point.

We have always held as Eastern Catholics that religious formation occurs most fundamentally in the family home. With that in mind, adult learning has to take place in order to ensure that future generations can enjoy the fulness of their own faith heritage.
