Good question! So then do just pick and choose what to believe? How do we know then if our beliefs are from God? How do we test the spirits? Sure I may not be able to recall the specific verse but for our beliefs and views to not have a solid base to test on opens a door to unlimited beliefs and views that may or may not be from God because we can’t test them.
And I did quote Scripture from St. Paul in an earlier post. He referred to himself and the other Apostles, as those who, by oral speech and letters, teach us. This authority was given by Christ Himself. And our Lord did not mean simply those men in their lifetime. The authority transferred to their successors, which we call the Apostolic Succession. Every Catholic priest can trace his ordination, the laying of hands, to the original Apostles. The teachings of the Church, the “Magisterium”, has the authority to pass on those teachings, using faith, tradition and reason.
For example, there is nothing in Scripture that says it is wrong to kill a prisoner of war. But the concept of showing mercy and protecting them is based on Church teachings (the foundation of the Geneva Convention came from a Spanish Catholic priest). That basis evolved from the concept that it is wrong to kill an enemy combatant who has surrendered or been disarmed and captured. The moral law, which was inscribed even in rational pagans’ hearts is understood by using reason and understanding the moral law.
St. Thomas Aquinas made a study of the moral law in the pre-Christian world, and reconciled it with Christianity. Even the Chinese philosopher Confucius, who lived centuries before our Lord understood that there is a moral law given to us by a Deity. So, before there was Scripture, the Church Fathers understood that a moral law existed in man’s hearts and minds before the revelation of Christ. The “moral” pagans like Socrates and Aristotle realized this using reason and the Golden Rule.
The Truth has existed before Scripture. The Church teaches that we must use faith, tradition, reason and Scriptures to understand and know the Truth. That is why Sola Scriptura is false. And we see too often that many sects who rely solely on Sola Scriptura have deviated from the Truth.
