Idolatry and hypocrisy

Time to recognise that western greed is one of the causes of global hunger

The many, many occasions when our Popes have condemned the attitude of selfish financial gain at the expense of others as idolatry seems to been lost on some of todays Catholics. Pope St JPII General Audience on the topic of the idolatry of greed. 1/9/04

2.“Their [the heathens’] idols” (v. 4) are immediately set against the true God worshipped by Israel. Idolatry is a temptation of all humanity in all lands and in all epochs. The idol is an inanimate object created by human hands, a cold and lifeless statue. The Psalmist ironically describes all seven of its useless members: a mouth that cannot speak, eyes that are blind, ears that are deaf, nostrils that smell nothing, hands that cannot feel, feet that cannot walk, a throat from which no sound comes (cf. vv. 5-7).

After this merciless criticism of idols, the Psalmist expresses a sarcastic wish: “Their makers will come to be like them and so will all who trust in them” (v. 8). The formulation of this wish is certainly calculated to produce, with regard to idolatry, a radically dissuasive effect. Those who worship the idols of riches, power and success forfeit their personal dignity. The Prophet Isaiah said: “All who make idols are nothing, and the things they delight in do not profit; their witnesses neither see nor know, that they may be put to shame” (Is 44: 9).

Pope Benedict Homily on idolatry today September 08

This appeal to shun idols, dear brothers and sisters, is also pertinent today. Has not our modern world created its own idols? Has it not imitated, perhaps inadvertently, the pagans of antiquity, by diverting man from his true end, from the joy of living eternally with God? This is a question that all people, if they are honest with themselves, cannot help but ask. What is important in my life? What is my first priority? The word “idol” comes from the Greek and means “image”, “figure”, “representation”, but also “ghost”, “phantom”, “vain appearance”. An idol is a delusion, for it turns its worshipper away from reality and places him in the kingdom of mere appearances. Now, is this not a temptation in our own day – the only one we can act upon effectively? The temptation to idolize a past that no longer exists, forgetting its shortcomings; the temptation to idolize a future which does not yet exist, in the belief that, by his efforts alone, man can bring about the kingdom of eternal joy on earth! Saint Paul explains to the Colossians that insatiable greed is a form of idolatry (cf. 3:5), and he reminds his disciple Timothy that love of money is the root of all evil. By yielding to it, he explains, “some have wandered away from the faith and pierced their hearts with many pangs” ( 1 Tim 6:10). Have not money, the thirst for possessions, for power and even for knowledge, diverted man from his true Destiny, from the truth about himself?

When the point of the Amazon Synod is to be aware of how the idolatry of western greed is destroying others, how is it that some can put all their angry zeal on the image of a little pregnant carving of a mother who nourished humanity from the soil? It is so hypocritical and embarrassing to be part of this greedy west without having equal zeal for the downfall of western greed.

Who nourishes humanity?

Who nourishes humanity?
The earth.

The earth is the gift. God is who gives. To God belongs the glory. He is a jealous God.

The earth that God gave us is alive with fertility. Through a natural communion, it’s seeds bear fruits which nourish humanity and the fruitful cycle continues. God created the earth with a maternal character of conceiving and bearing fruit. It is not evil or unnatural that people have found in that gift a need to continuously give thanks in a pre-Eucharistic manner.

I think St. Thomas Aquinas identified wealth, power, pleasure, and honor as the false gods of our age. Ain’t it the truth!

The earth is the Lord’s and the fulness thereof,
the world and those who dwell therein;
2 for he has founded it upon the seas,
and established it upon the rivers. Psalm 24:100:
It is not evil or unnatural that people have found in that gift a need to continuously give thanks
Give thanks to God, not the Earth.
That sounds very Protestant. Go straight to God. No need for the intercession of Mary and the Saints.
The earth is not a person. The earth is not a saint. The earth was not created in the image and likeness of God.

Give thanks to God for Mary and the Saints. Without Him, Mary is nothing.

The patronage of Mother Mary is endlessly invoked in blessings of farms and Catholic buildings etc. Her patronage in different capacities is invoked for nations as Mother. The Maronite Church celebrates her maternal patronage 3 times in the year. 15 January – Our Lady of the Seeds. 15 May – Our Lady of the Harvest 15 August – Our Lady of the Grapes

Yes, though Mary is a person, a saint, our Holy Mother of God. She is Queen in Heaven with Jesus our King. The blessing of farms and buildings are prayers to God.

Never is “mother earth” a patron or prayed to or asked to give a blessing.
Through the Motherhood of Mary, the Word became flesh.
and our Blessed Mother Mary is a creation of our God.

How does this have anything to do with “mother earth”. Our Blessed Mother in heaven is NOT “mother earth”. It seems as though you are somehow trying to blend “mother earth” in with God and the saints but it just doesn’t work…

We also recognise her as Queen of Earth.

Are you saying the pre-Christians were wrong to have attributed the gift of the earth to a maternal character?
If that is what you are trying to say then yes I disagree. The pre Christians, Christians and anyone else should attribute the gift of the earth to God the creator.

Mary is still not the earth!! She is a person, a saint, a woman!
The earth is NOT a person, a saint, nor even male or female!

Mary and the earth are NOT one and the same. No.
