they could all get together and each list of the verses they have memorized to combat catholics, and the whole thing would be reproduced:D

What would happen to all the “bible” churches?
No sweat, the church would look to the Jews for the Old Testament scriptures. We would actually have to preach the Gospel of Christ from the OT scriptures exclusively like the 1st century Church did. No doubt Israel would benefit greatly from this.
👍

Silly hypothetical question. Such Bible christians will simply respond that God will prevent such a thing from happening.

Then they will turn and ask you “What if all the priests and bishops with valid Holy Orders in the world were collected and killed? Would there cease to be Eucharist, forgiveness for sins, confirmation and marriage?”

Same defense. Gates of Hell will not prevail - Jesus.

This, of course, would be a great tragedy. However, the Catholic Church is a Christ-centered church, not a bible-centered church. We would then rely much more on Sacred Tradition, which is what lays the foundation for, and gives context to, Sacred Scripture. Just as the church began, so it would continue. The Word made flesh is Jesus Christ by whom our church was founded. Only some of that word was actually written, witness Luke 3:18 and John 20:30 and 21:25.

Nevertheless, loss of scripture would be a very traumatic occurrence, but not fatal to the Catholic Church by any means.

Christ’s peace.

I believe that the Holy Spirit would come up with a plan…🙂

Doesnt the Catholic Church have a huge dependence on the Scriptures as well? 🤷
Yes - but not entirely. We also belive in Tradition - that Jesus left us far more than what is only contained in the Bible.

He would not leave us orphans - he left us Himself in the Eucharist, and Tradition to continue His Church.

Absolutely! The first half of each mass is dedicated to Sacred Scripture. In the “Liturgy of the Word”, the bible is taken from its place front and center on the Altar and elevated before the congregation. We then we listen to separate readings from the Old Testament, the New Testament, we sing a responsorial Psalm and then hear a reading from the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

It would be a great tragedy for Sacred Scripture to be lost, so the compassionate and merciful Lord has preserved it from ever being lost in this age. But, the Sacred Scripture is only the introduction to the “something greater here” that we all have in Christ Jesus. He is the Alpha and Omega, and the purpose of our observance. In the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the bread and wine are confected by the Holy Spirit into the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ.

We would sufer a great loss without scripture, but our faith and our Lord would always remain.

Christ’s peace.

thank goodness all but four NT verses (or something like that) are quoted in the Early Church Fathers. So we would still have the NT. And as far as those bible churches, well in order to get the NT to read they would have to read the ECF for a while till someone published a reconstituted NT which means the would get to learn all about the Catholicity of the early church! i see the silver lining already!!! 😉

Absolutely! It was just a thought that popped in my head. It wasn’t intended as an argument against protestants, it was just somethign that popped into my head

Didn’t you know that the Church exists before the Bible?
How does my comment mean that I suggested the Scriptures existed before the Church?

Don’t we read parts of the bible at Mass?
Arent a lot of the liturgical prayers based on Scripture?

Question: Did Christ found a bible, or a church? That changes the picture. The bible says he founded a church, and it us the pillar and strength. Just a thought.

Christ’s peace.

What would happen to all the “bible” churches?
Assuming such a thing would be possible (it wouldn’t unless there was a worldwide flood or fire, then they would gather together and write down from memory the verses they remember. It’s funny, because that’s how the canon of Buddhist scriptures were done.

So the Christians would do the same thing and write down from memory the verses they had learned and before you know it, another Bible would come into being. Of course, the gospels would be the easiest.

And besides that, God would find a way to get his message across to His creation 😃

Peace…

If the Bibles were all destroyed, do you actually think the Hebrew scriptures would escape?

In an old book titled Mr. Blue, the main character writes a story in which the entire world is taken over by an atheistic government which kills all Christians. Finally, there is only one priest left. In the final scene, he is hiding on the roof of a building and saying mass. At the moment of elevating the host and chalice he is shot by a government sniper. As he falls, the trumpet sounds, the heavens open, and Christ appears in glory. So, to answer your question, the church will persist until the end.

What would happen if the CC were obliterated by a plague ? Same answer.

The Word of God will not pass away - He promised this in umabiguous terms. He made no such promise regarding the CC. If the CC were obliterated, He would provide. 😃

If the actual Bibles were destroyed people would just go online and print out new ones. Now if we lost the hardcopies and the electronic copies there might be some sort of scrambling around somewhere.
