I feel that they (the government) threaten us (the citizenry) with violence every day in an effort to dominate us; to make us submissive and maintain their power. That’s tyrannical and I oppose it.
What are you talking about? Do you have some example of when our government is threatening us with violence?

You know, there’s more to the government than Mr. Bush. I called the government “tyrannical” and the government “incompetent” but you only focus on Mr. Bush being a tyrant or Mr. Bush being incompetent.

You mean like raising our taxes and threatening us with violence if we don’t pay?😉

I’m not so sure that jerry rigging a loophole in order to circumvent the clear intent of the constitution to have an electoral college system for presidential elections would survive court challenge.

A strict constructionist would be within his philosophy to declare that such measures by a bare majority of states consitutes an attempt to remove one of the checks and balances clearly intended by the founding fathers. Thus, they could rule such law unconstitutional. It would certainly have a lot more legal merit than some of the other phoney junk that has come out of the Supreme Court in my lifetime!

Education needs to have a standard. If education were totally left up to the states, more conservative states would teach less science, evolution ect. Think about a student coming from South Carolina and trying to apply to medical school elsewhere. The admissions would laugh their application out of the office.
Exactly. Sounds like the market would enforce its own standard.

I’m not at all sure that people are generally better educated now than before there was a federal Department of Education.

The existence of the DoE is non-negotiable. I don’t want Kansas in my backyard.

Since you brought it up…

Article IV, Section 10
No state shall, without the consent of Congress, lay any duty of tonnage, keep troops, or ships of war in time of peace, enter into any agreement or compact with another state, or with a foreign power, or engage in war, unless actually invaded, or in such imminent danger as will not admit of delay.
I’m not a Constitutional law expert, but it looks like this could be cited by the Supreme Court to strike down such an agreement between states. I’m not sure, because the paragraph appears to apply to military usage, so I’m not sure if it would apply to other agreements or compacts.

Now, regarding the way electors vote, my understanding is that they are elected and then may vote as they wish. Of course, electors generally vote according to the popular vote of their state. I think, if California wanted to, they could actually split the electors votes to reflect the state (i.e. 40% Republican and 60% Democrat).

If there are any Constitutional law experts out there who wish to correct me, please do so.

That’s why I support true choice in education. Lert the parents choose the school – state run, or private, non-profit or for-profit – and pay a standard tuition equal to 90% of the per-pupil share of the education budget as tuition. Let good schools prosper and bad ones fail.

:ehh: How is Kansas going to end up in your backyard? Dorothy’s house maybe…but all of Kansas? How big is your yard?

I’m in California. I have Angelides and Schwarzenegger. Politically they are clones. One makes awful movies. I don’t think it matters which one wins. We won’t be able to tell the diff.

I agree. I haven’t seen any improvement - just money down a rat hole.

Not true. Angelides is very far left, which is why he won’t win. Had the Democrats elected a more moderate candidate in the primary, he/she probably could have beaten the (name removed by moderator).

The local BOE around here tends to be pretty Neanderthal, to use a word which they might not officially recognize, but at least it has no designs on any else’s backyard. But the DOE does. And the DOE is run by bureaucrats who are there, of course, to help you.

:clapping:

I agree, but it should be done at the state/local level. BTW…90% is mighty generous. I think most of the voucher proposals I’ve seen are much less. With 90%, we could all afford Catholic schools!

Hey Jim,

What do the elks (BOE) have to do with it? 😃

Oh, wait, you meant the Barring Of Education in Kansas.

(Sorry, I know it was a typo, but I can’t help myself sometimes.)

That’s why I say “free choice,” not “vouchers.” The left has learned its lesson – if they can’t stop vouchers, they poison the well – by limiting vouchers to only a fraction of the per-pupil share, and then limiting them to children with red hair and having one brown and one blue eye.

That reminds me of a skit with Roan Atkinson I saw on British television…it took place in a board room and they were discussing a replacement for one of the positions. The chairman said the replacement should be black…a woman…lesbian…and handicapped. After the chairman left, one of the board members said “That’s Johnson, always making sure one of his relatives get’s hired.”😃

Well, the Elks can be a significant voting bloc, and the board of education (it’s only the banning of education in parts of the state) is locally elected.

But being locally elected has its advantages–parents and teachers know their phone numbers and addresses; and they don’t hesitate to complain!

Oh…it wasn’t a typo…my bad. :o I was part of the Bored Of Education growing up, so I should have known better. Go Elks!

This is exactly why education should be handled locally. Communities can keep locally elected officials in line much easier than those who are appointed by federal government officials.
