If starting today, all one billion Catholics actually became “practicing” Catholics, how would the World change?

tz620, sorry, I deleted that post because I went back to reread the other posts and was able to understand what JimmyB was saying.
 
Their political clout would become a force to really be reckoned with.

Parishes would really need to do some expansion work to fit everybody that usually only comes for Christmas and Easter.

The priest shortage would really be felt and there would be a larger outreach (than there already is) to really fill those positions. That may have a negative effect on the preservation of liturgy…some parishes would be tempted to cut corners to satisfy the needs of the “active” parish population explosion.

There are approximately 1.4 million Knights of Columbus all over the world doing great things for the poor…talk about missionaries…
 
Yesterday at morning mass, the priest said during his homily that in ancient times, when Christianity was just new, the pagans recognized the Christians by their love for one another.

So if all one billion plus of us would be practicing perhaps, the world would be at peace!? Because we would be exercising our love for one another in so many ways.

the late JP II said…if you want peace, work for justice…and that’s what loving one another evokes love, peace and justice…it just follows through. That’s my hope anyway. Afterall, with God all things are possible.

Yes, but a practicing Catholic recognizes sin for what it is, and is disposed to repent of it, rather than living in it.

No, but it does perfect the conscience, so that sin is more evident and more easily abandoned.

Actually, people who do such things have fallen from a state of grace, and are on the road to hell. And people that have an abortion excommunicate themselves, so they can no longer properly be called Catholics. Many “Catholics” (in name only ) think that they can pick and choose cafeteria style what they want to believe. But this is not the Teaching of Jesus we have received from the Apostles. Most folks don’t know they are no longer Catholic, but have become at the very least Protestant, and at worst, fallen into the pit.

Yes, but also doing something about it, like repenting, and obeying the Commandments. Do you really believe that, if people obeyed the Commandments of God, life would not change?!

Don’t you think, if all the unfaithful persons honored the commandment “do not commit adultery” that a lot of spouses and children would be spared immeasurable pain? :confused:

Are to a member of the Knights of Columbus? If so, hello brother Knight +

The Knights of Columbus, started by Father Michael J. McGivney in New Haven, Connecticut over 125 years ago, helped those in need back then and still helps those in need today, especially the unborn. It is a great organization and one that I would recommend for any lay Catholic men who live their his life as a Catholic. I am proud to be a Knight.

I am a Third Decree Knight and I hope to soon become a Fourth Degree, hopefully this summer.

I think the first thing practicing catholics would do would be to create a form of a Catholic Sharia Law. And there would be a return to the olden days before the French Revolution when the clergy owned most of the land in the country. :o

Dear Agnos,

Jesus only gives us 2 laws, or one law with 2 verses. No need for a lengthy sharia law.
 
  1. We would have followed God’s first request of man and thus the earth would be subdued.
  2. Many divorce lawyers would be practicing some other law.
  3. Planned Parenthood would become an NFP training facility.
  4. Hollywood would become the World Center for Catholic Evangelization.
  5. Super Bowl Saturday?
  6. “I am sorry” would be expressed in more than 3 words.
  7. There would be a clearer distinction between beach wear and bedroom wear.
  8. Pharmacies carrying contraceptives would be the minority.
  9. Magazine covers would feature somehing other than a woman’s chest and the word “sex”.
  10. We would be surrounded by God’s grace.

Not to pick on just you Brian, but I fail to see how a world which is largely non-Catholic would change simply because “professed” Catholics became actual “practicing” Catholics.

While I agree that some things would improve, such as not having to worry so much about what my kids are learning while attending a Catholic school. That doesn’t negate the fact that this is a world where evil can and does exist. I’m sure Satan likes the fact that many Catholics do not live their faith as they should. Which is why I hold to the belief that the Church would suffer from more persecution if all of its one billion members were united. Note that I said suffer, not defeated. The ultimate victory still belongs to Christ.

Sorry to be such a “Debbie Downer”, but the apparent urtopia descriptions in this thread seem to me to be sort of “uncatholic”.

I am so sick and tired of people saying how Catholics don’t live their faith. There are hundreds of missionaries, 1.5 million from the Knights of Columbus alone, there are one called Opus Dei in which all families belong and one for single people who are very Holy. There are hundreds if not thousands of missionaries for people who live their faith. My church has many Holy people who live their faith, some still wear a veil to Mass. So before you knock the Catholics, know what the heck you are talking about first.:mad:

Who’s knocking Catholics?? Apparently you misunderstood my comment. I never mentioned that ALL Catholics were NOT living their faith. I know there are many, many Catholics who do practice their faith in accordance with Church teaching. For one, check my signature, you’ll notice how highly I regard at least one of the groups you mentioned (Knights of Columbus).

Sadly, not ALL Catholics do live their faith. The point I was trying to make is that the World would hate the Catholic Church all the more if ALL 1,000,000,000 (looks more impressive when you actually use the number) of us were united in faith. And that’s not a bad thing. Remember what Jesus said, “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first.”
