If you are Catholic- Do you HAVE to say the rosary?

Growing up and staying with my grandparents during the summers, they used to go to mass everyday and make me say the Rosary with them. My grandfather always made it seem that we had to say the Rosary. I was just wondering if there is any Church Tradition or Dogma that requires one to say the Rosary?
 
You also don’t have to turn on the air conditioner when it’s 90some degrees outside.
 
No, we don’t have to say it, because it is based on private revelation. I do know many people, even non-Catholics, who pray it on a regular basis.

No you don’t. In fact many Catholics nowadays don’t. It is also true that not a few Catholics seem to feel that such devotions are completely un biblical and un Christian in nature and should be done away with.

Forcing anyone to do a private devotion is never a good idea, especially children. If a child shows no affinity for a devotion, it shouldn’t be pushed on him.

Having said that, I think that a devotion such as the rosary deserves every consideration before being ignored. There’s good reason why the Church has honored this devotion down through the centuries.

For some people a scriptural rosary make all the difference in their understanding and desire for it since such rosary meditation shows its connection to the Bible, the Gospels in particular.

Devotions come and go in the life of the Church, so no one has to do any of them. If a particular devotion is not helpful to you, then don’t do it. No devotion should be an end in itself but aid us in our efforts to keep our baptismal vows. If it doesn’t do that, then it’s probably not the one for you. 🙂
 
You don’t have to say the rosary, but it’s worth learning to pray the rosary. I often use the rosary as a form of contemplative prayer kind of like lectio divina. The rosary is simply a way to more deeply focus on specific aspects of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. Sometimes I don’t do the whole thing in one sitting. If I get into a deeper prayer with one particular mystery, I might just stop and dwell on it a little longer.

Yes, one doesn’t just “say” the rosary. It’s a very special and powerful prayer. So one “prays” the rosary.
 
There are many equally beneficial prayers for one’s journey. Some of the traditions of the east, where the rosary did not develop as a devotion, are the Jesus Prayer, akathists, molebens, panakhidas, and more.

The key is not how you pray, but that you pray.

The Rosary was specifically beneficial to the laity in times when copies of Sacred Scripture were not available to them. The Rosary aided the laity to meditate upon the Mysteries of Sacred Scripture, that is Christ’s Life, with a deep devotion to Our Blessed Virgin Mother Mary.

If a person whether they are a child or an adult does not feel drawn to this particular devotion of the Rosary then there are other forms of prayer they may be drawn to ie meditative prayer which may still be doen with special affection for our Blessed Virgin Mother Mary.

Pray to the Holy Spirit and ask Him to show you His ways in Prayer. He will lead you and you will find the way of praying that God will draw you to.

There is no room in Catholicism for spiritual snobbery!

If a soul loves the Rosary then let that be for them and no-one has a right to comment on it and if a soul cannot pray the Rosary then let their form of prayer be for them as God Wills within Catholic prayer as in the Catechism and no-one has a right to comment on it.

The important thing is to pray.🙂

We have our CIA (Catholic Intelligence Agency) operatives in the community who check out every known Catholic - and then kneecap them if they’re discovered not to say the Rosary regularly. :rolleyes:
 
I have to say the rosary because my 5th grade nun said we would go to hell if we died and weren’t praying the rosary. :rolleyes:
And because of Sister “what’s her name”, I carry my rosary EVERYWHERE. For me it’s kinda like an American Express card…I don’t leave home without it.

We should all check these out more - some of them are really beautiful.

Of course a tradition we have in the West is the litany - you may want to check out this site - there are some nice Marian litanies there (the Litany of Loreto probably being the best known)
 
I’m just learning this prayer now, Fr. Corapi says it’s praying the Gospel, I see it as a way to develop a deeper prayer life to wich one can cultivate intamacy w/Christ.

As children my mother would have us all kneel around her while she sat and we all prayed the rosary together.We did this every evening when I was growing up. Although forced, my mother had good intentions; and today I am grateful that she instilled in me at least (I can’t speak for my brothers and sisters) this beautiful devotion.

TAN Books has a whole prayer book of litanies. (For:D old fuddy duddies like me, who like a hard copy!!)
