If you are Catholic- Do you HAVE to say the rosary?

I agree that the rosary does not have to be said. However at Fatima our lady asked us to pray the rosary and so i try and sometimes do it daily.

i find that of all the prayers and devotions i always tend to be disturbed when i say the rosary

See that could be a gentle nudge from above - could mean that it’s annoying the devil and you should persevere. Of course it could also mean you’re meant to be doing some other devotion :eek:
 
I grew up saying the rosary, but I blush to admit that it’s never been my favorite prayer. I love litanies though, and I do like the chaplet of divine mercy. However, the psalms are my favorite prayer hands down.

Nothing to feel guilty about. I don’t think there is a “one-size-fits-all” type of spirituality. I think we are called to different prayer lives, and maybe different styles of prayer. I think the important thing is that we pray.
 
No, of course not, but it is one of two ways of prayer recommended by the Catechism (along with lectio divina - meditation on the Scriptures). For me, the Rosary was “the rope out of hell.” By that, I mean it was the only way I could pray during an very difficult time in my life. 👍
 
I have to admit, I never say the rosary, except for when my priest tells me to do it as penance. I certainly have nothing against the rosary though! It is just that I feel much closer and devoted to the Divine Mercy.🙂
 
Now more than ever… we need to pray the Rosary. So, yes, you have to. If you need to , ETWN has the Rosary on at different times and you can follow along. Also, you can get pamphlets to show you how to. Don’t feel bad if you don’t know how…I don;t always pray the Rosary. However, now I am going to do it.

God bless :crossrc: - but we need to pray more in general, and especially attend Mass, which is the highest form of prayer, as many days as we can. Not just the Rosary.

Whenever I am praying the Psalms, I feel as if the Lord is putting the words into my mouth. The highest form of comfort…!

But the Rosary is just something that makes my day holy. I cannot explain - it is really praying the Gospel, especially if I use a scriptural Rosary, or simply have the Bible open at the appropriate chapter to look into for inspiration.

It is marvellous that God provides a prayer form for all characters and personalities, what a divine polyphony! 🙂

Hello,

I think I should point out here that the church puts the Liturgy of the Hours above the Rosary because it is a liturgical prayer. That said, whatever draws you closer to God is what you should do, but you are certainly under no obligation to do the rosary. If you choose to do something else, especially the Liturgy of the Hours, then you’re doing very well indeed. I recommend a book, “Prayer and Temperament”, if you’re trying to decide what type of prayer might be best for you. We’re told on good authority that we’ll be “known by [our] fruits”, so whatever causes you to love most, and live that love most fully, is the best thing to do. Take care, God bless!

When we were growing up we all gathered around the family room kneeling in front of a picture of the Sacred Heart and would pray it every night as a family. If we were in the car in the evening, we would pray it there instead. To me, it is a way of life, kind of like showering, you just do it everyday and feel more at peace when I do pray it. TO answer the OP, no, it is not required.

Also something I wanted is that my grandma gave my son a book on the rosary last year and in there it states “The 15 promises of the Rosary given by the Blessed Virgin to Saint Dominic and the Blessed Alan de la Roche”. It is as follows (wow, this is a long one to type)

"1. Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the
Rosary, shall receive signal graces.
  1. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the rosary.
  2. The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies.
  3. It will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the hearts of people from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.
  4. The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall not perish.
  5. Whoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its Sacred Mysteries shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise him in His justice, he shall not perish by an unprovided death; if he be just, he shall remain in the grace of God, and become worthy of eternal life.

With that being said, I am glad I grew up learning this beautiful devotion. My DH had not prayed it as a family as I did when he was growing up, but now he enjoys praying it as well, and prays it on his own. 👍
 
If you are in love, (and are loved back), do you HAVE to say ‘I love you’?

If you are a small child, do you HAVE to give your mother a hug and tell her you love her?

If you are in trouble do you HAVE to ask help from someone you know for sure that cares about you and will help you?

If you are given a great power to pray for others and help others, do you HAVE to use it?

If you have a great friend who loves you and cares about you very much, do you HAVE to talk to her?

If someone wants to give you all kind of wonderful presents you need and will surely enjoy very much, do you HAVE to accept them?

No it’s not obligatory being it’s a private devotion albeit a very popular one among practicing Catholics. With that said, the rosary is an extremely beautiful prayer and meditation upon the mysteries of the gospel that is also an extremely efficacious prayer to God. After all, you’re petitioning the most powerful intercessor second only to Christ Himself, Mary the most Holy Mother of God. Why, on earth, would you want to deprive yourself of such a great blessing?
 
I understand everyone’s point with "you pray the rosary, (rather than saying the rosary). But for goodness sakes, I knew what you meant. I think everyone should lighten up on you a little bit, because (in the benefit of the doubt and in respect to you) I’m sure you already know it. I often find such technical quips to be less than constructive, and more on the insulting side. Yes, it’s true you pray (rather than just say) the rosary. But God bless you, whew! You just wanted to know the answer to a question… to which the answer is “no”… you are not required to pray the rosary or even to pray to Mary. It is not dogma. And you shouldn’t be made to feel as though you are spiritually less for it ;). God bless you, and hang in there :hug1:!

P.S.- The Rosary is good to pray, and I would recommend praying it if Jesus leads you to do so.

wow, wow, wow. Thankyou so much for posting this. As a former protestant I am surprised how much my devotion to Our Lady is growing. I am feeling more called to pray the rosary more often - aiming for daily but doesn’t always happen. Reading this makes me just want to RUN and grab my rosary and start praying and never stop.

I feel so much heartheart for our protestant brothers and sisters in Christ. They have such a sincere desire to love and serve Our Lord yet they are missing out on so many blessings from heaven that could draw them ever deeper and closer in their relationship with Him. Obviously the Eucharist is the most important sacrament that a protestant is unable to receive but I also regret that they don’t know of the help offered from the angels and the saints. If only I could tear down those anti-catholic walls and open their eyes to the spiritual riches available to them. I really feel like crying for them and what they miss out on.

As St. Bridget for a long time wanted to know the number of blows Our Lord received during His Passion, He one day appeared to her and said: “I received 5480 blows on My Body. If you wish to honor them in some way, recite fifteen times the Our Father and Hail Mary, together with the following prayers, which I Myself will teach you for an entire year. When the year is finished, you will have honored each of My Wounds.”

Our Lord made the following promises to anyone who recited the fifteen St. Bridget Prayers devoutly every day for a whole year:

Promises
I will deliver 15 souls of his lineage from Purgatory.
15 souls of his lineage will be confirmed and preserved in grace.
15 sinners of his lineage will be converted.
Whoever recites these Prayers will attain the first degree of perfection.
15 days before his death, I will give him My Precious Body in order that he may escape eternal starvation;
I will give him my Precious Blood to drink lest he thirst eternally.
15 days before his death he will feel a deep contrition for all his sins and will have a perfect knowledge of them.
I will place before him the sign of My Victorious Cross for his help and defense against the attacks of his enemies.
Before his death I shall come with My Dearest Beloved Mother.
I shall graciously receive his soul, and will lead it into eternal joys.
And having led it there I shall give him a special draught from the fountain of My Deity, something I will not do for those who have not recited My Prayers.
Let it be known that whoever may have been living in a state of mortal sin for 30 years, but who will recite devoutly, or have the intention to recite these Prayers, I the Lord will forgive him all his sins.
I shall protect him from strong temptations.
I shall preserve and guard his five senses.
I shall preserve him from a sudden death.
His soul will be delivered from eternal death.
He will obtain all he asks for from God and the Blessed Virgin.
If he has lived all his life doing his own will and he is to die the next day, his life will be prolonged.
Every time one recites these Prayers he gains 100 days indulgence.
He is assured of being joined to the supreme Choir of Angels.
Whoever teaches these prayers to another will have continual joy and merit which will last throughout eternity.
There where these Prayers are being said or will be said in the future, God is present with His grace.

First Prayer
Our Father - Hail Mary.
O Jesus Christ! Eternal Sweetness to those who love Thee, joy surpassing all joy and all desire, Salvation and Hope of all sinners, Who hast proved that Thou hast no greater desire than to be among men, even assuming human nature at the fullness of time for the love of men, recall all the sufferings Thou hast endured from the instant of Thy conception, and especially during Thy Passion, as it was decreed and ordained from eternity in the Divine plan.

Remember, O Lord, that during the Last Supper with Thy disciples having washed their feet, Thou gavest them Thy Most Precious Body and Blood, and while at the same time Thou didst sweetly console them, Thou didst fortell them Thy coming Passion.

Remember the sadness and bitterness which Thou didst experience in Thy Soul as Thou Thyself bore witness saying: “My Soul is sorrowful even unto death.”

Remember all the fear, anguish and pain that Thou didst suffer in Thy delicate Body before the torment of the Crucifixion, when, after having prayed three times, bathed in a sweat of blood, Thou wast betrayed by Judas, Thy disciple, arrested by the people of a nation Thou hadst chosen and elevated, accused by false witnesses, unjustly judged by three judges during the flower of Thy youth and during the solemn Paschal season.

Remember that Thou wast despoiled of Thy garments and clothed in those of derision; that Thy Face and Eyes were veiled, that Thou wast buffeted, crowned with thorns, a reed placed in Thy Hands, that Thou wast crushed with blows and overwhelmed with affronts and outrages.

In memory of all these pains and sufferings which Thou didst endure before Thy Passion on the Cross, grant me before my death true contrition, a sincere and entire confession, worthy satisfaction and the remission all my sins. Amen
