In my secular world, I’m around a bunch of guys who tend to be cocky, arrogant, vain and full of themself. Admittedly, I’m more than a little like that, too, but many of them are divorced, re-married, etc. and under the facade, are lonely and miserable.

They don’t have a clue on what to look for. Of course, since I’m Catholic, I have a tremendous advantage. I give them pointers, but I get laughed at.

If you are/were single, what would you value most in a potential spouse?

I dearly love my DH but were I to do it all over, I’d look only for a faithful, practicing, orthodox Catholic man with whom I could attend Mass and do Church “stuff”.

Well, I already have a beautiful, intelligent, kind, loving, and extremely Catholic girlfriend, so I hope that answers your question. So, hands off ladies, I’m taken.

For starters, there is one thing I would definitely require…

She MUST unambiguously be a woman.

Good mental health and maturity, reliable, someone I like and who likes me in return, compatible culture and lifestyle, compatible religion (of course faithful Catholic is first pick), likes kids, is moral, etc. Basically someone who can understand marriage and actually wants marriage, knowing what it is. Beauty does not outweigh these things as it can’t compensate for not desiring a real marriage. However, I wouldn’t go for it without that special “spark” .😃

For the ones who picked “I want it all”, I have to ask, since no one is perfect, would you tend to desire more beauty or more Catholic faith?

More Catholic faith, but I got lucky 😉

I would want someone who felt comfortable in the role of being a husband, who would be ok with the fact that God decided I would not bear my own children, who didn’t mind that my thighs are too big for me to be a supermodel and who I could say was the handsomest man in the whole world no matter what he looks like - and that means someone who is a faithful Catholic who wants to be a part of parish life.

Oh, yeah - and he can’t mind that I am sober and active in my 12 step group…some men hate that…I know that from experience (I you SURE you’re an alcoholic? But you don’t LOOK like one! Here, try just ONE…).🤓

I picked “I want it all”. I desire Catholic faith more. I would find him handsome and sexy if he was a good Catholic man! The “beauty”(to me) comes from the inside! I’ve dated some absolutely gorgeous guys who were real jerks on the inside, and I’ve dated some not so handsome guys who were very sweet and nice guys on the inside, which made them handsome to me!

I voted for the last option. However,i’m almost 63 years old now,so it’s just not going to happen.Still,i can always dream.Mind you,i would have to LIKE her as well.I’ve seen plenty of beautiful women, but some of them were cold fish.

A nice girl who is willing to share the house and family responsibilities (including faith formation). 👍

I voted, I want it all.

I want to be attracted to a woman. My wonderful wife (Marmee79 aka Julie) and mother of our six precious gifts, caught me with her smile as she siphoned a blood donation from me at the Red Cross, in 1985. She was also very nice, and so I asked her if she wanted to come hear some Mozartwhen my new grand piano is delivered. She didn’t have a comeback for that. 🙂

Music can have its advantages. 😃 (psst I read somewhere the Holy Father plays Mozart and Beethoven among other things on the piano)

She didn’t have to look like Britney Spears, for obvious reasons – who’d want to marry that sorry wench?

I’m looking for a faithful Catholic. I got one, and she is worth more than her weight in gold. We really didn’t know what that meant completely but we’re a lot closer now. She is faithful enough she just might pull off justifying a twit like me. She and the kids make rosaries by the dozen, and we just love talking daily about our faith at home, and with friends.

Also, I want a woman who will agree to all of the following:
  1. divorce is simply not an option. we will stay together no matter what, and that means no matter how miserable we are or what other people say, whether from friends or family, TV shows, books, or some other type of “professional” advice. No deal, no compromise. Once we start considering an escape that pollutes our ability to see clearly to work together to solve a problem.
  2. we will avail ourselves of some type of marriage prep, and go together and entushiastically. Julie and I went to Catholic Charities, but that’s a long story. It was tremendous future payoff for a small time invested.
  3. after marriage we go to marriage encounter at least once, as soon as practicable preferably. (consider engaged encounter maybe but we never went so I can’t say)
  4. we will never, ever, assume the other person has an attitude problem, above and beyond our own.
  5. we will not hold the other responsible for reading our minds. If they forget something or do something for us that we don’t like, it’s ok to admit we don’t like it but not until after we thank the person. Never, ever, sarcastically!
  6. never withhold negative information from me, when you know that others are judging me. i need to know this. Exception: times of emotional stress, we get calmed down first.
  7. we will commit to daily prayer, if 10 seconds or 10 minutes, or longer some days. Never a specific time, but the frequency is more important than the duration I think. This will be something we always look forward to and will not be a chore and we will never feel guilty if we miss it. If we do miss it, we reaffirm our love each other – preferably by voice or instant message, email, whatever we got – and get right back to it asap. Preferable on the spot, even if over the phone. On rare occasions, I’ve shared family prayers via telephone while on businesss trips.
Whew. there’s lots more where that comes from but those are a few things that come directly to mind.

Hey Alan,

Woah! Dude, you rock!

You must be Catholic, or something.

Isn’t it great to be in a sacramental marriage? Even if she doesn’t look like Britanny Spears, she actually looks better, as the years wear on.

Thank you for your post. I’ll apply your advise, right now.

BTW, what’s it like living in the aviation Mecca of the world?

Well, since you went and asked, it has some great advantages.

A few weeks ago I went upside down in an airplane for the first time, in a beautiful 1942 Stearman. I did fly front seat, as a passenger. The pilot, whom I trusted, did a barrel roll! It was great. Never before did I get to wear goggles in an open cockpit like the Red Baron. Here’s his plane. He also owns a Cessna 182.

Here’s my daughter Catherine just after her ride, and owner Matt in back driving.

Hey, Britanny hasn’t a chance. She’s on the other side of an electronic and glamorous world from us.

Have you ever heard of the song by Queen called Teo Torriate (Let Us Cling Together?)
When I’m gone
Don’t stop to wonder if I ever think of you
The same moon shines
The same wind blows
For both of us, and time is but a paper moon. . . be not gone
Though I’m gone
It’s just as though I hold the flower that touches you
A new life grows
The blossom knows
There’s no one else could warm my heart as much as you. . . be not gone
Let us cling together as the years go by
Oh my love, my love
In the quiet of the night
Let our candle always burn
Let us never lose the lessons we have learned
Teo torriate konomama iko
Aisuruhito yo
Shizukana yoi ni
Hikario tomoshi
Itoshiki oshieo idaki
Hear my song
Still think of me the way you’ve come to think of me
The nights grow long
But dreams live on
Just close your pretty eyes and you can be with me. . . dream on
When I’m gone
They’d say we’re all fools and we don’t understand
Oh be strong
Don’t turn your heart
You’re all
We’re all
For all
For always. . .

Well, I could say the last one easily… but since we don’t get everything that we want, at least he has to be Catholic… you see, I got all I could have wanted (and more) in my bf!

Faith… outer beauty ceases to show, while inner beauty continues to grow!
