If You Could Pick Just One Scripture Passage..

If you could pick just one scripture passage that you felt virtually sums up the message of salvation (what it takes to be saved) which one would it be?

I tend to think it would be St. Matthew 25:31-46… (?)

This pretty much sums it for me (Matthew 7:13-14, 21-27)

"Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many. How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few.

I was told as a young 'un that there is one bible verse that has been translated into more languages than any other - John 3:16:

‘For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in Him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting’

and for me that’s as good summary as any verse of the message of scripture.

No passage sums up (virtually or any other way) the message of Salvation. All passages must be read within the context of all of inspired scripture.

no… all passages must be read within the context of the Church… which existed long before the bible and created the Bible… (put certain books in, left some out, etc…)

That is a very powerful passage for someone like me who was maltreated by parents and many others… and thought that even Jesus didn’t love me or care waht happened to me… As stated somewhere else in the forums today… (?) i never knew Jesus… was never intimate with him until i came to the Church (His Church)… and when i began to spend time with Him at the Blessed Sacrament… i really, truly began to not only KNOW but FEEL His love… unconditional… I had never known unconditional love before… I had even read that scripture you mention before coming to the Church & i tried to believe it but never could… i always felt i was just scum, worthless, etc… Sometimes, deep down inside, when not in the Church, i STILL feel this way… but i never, ever feel this way in His Presence… i feel like crying every time i think about this… how he gave his absolute ALL for us… and we don’t “access” what he has to give… most people, even Cahtolics, do not spend time with Him @ the Blessed Sacrament…

If everyone spent just one hour a day There, the world would be changed… dramatically…

I really believe we need the whole Bible

and, of course, Christ’s One true Church… to know what we need to know to be saved…

One doesn’t need to be a member of the Church, though.

Are you kidding??? Can the eye live with out the head? Can the finger without the hand? The body is a conglomeration of its parts. With out the body the parts cannot live. Of course one has to be a member of the Church.

(The question is, how to find the true church)

Don’t get me wrong all, God has his Church and, no matter who claims theirs is THE CHURCH, he know whose are his.

“God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him” (1 Jn 4:16).

i have and still consider myself the scum of the earth and it this verse alone that has kept me from giving up completely…i whole heartilly agree with your last statement in regards to adoration…

hmm… nice to meet someone who can relate to me feeling so worthless… and who also appreciates this scripture (more than most of the other ones…).

that devil sure can lie, can’t he (telling us we are worthless when we should “know” better, should know that God doesn’t make junk)??

That’s all you need in life. Remember, if you don’t follow this one, “vengeance will be upon [you] sevenfold!”

I think the great variety of answers here stands witness to the reason we were given all of scripture and not simply a short passage summary.
