If you could, what changes if any would you make to the Ordinary Form?

I would omit the hand raising when people say “and with your spirit”. I know it isn’t officially a part of the mass and I think that’s why it annoys me so much. I would omit contemporary music, or at least the type that my parish has for their contemp mass. Ours sounds like a children’s sing along with the snare drum keeping rhythm. I keep expecting Barney to come running out while they play so I avoid that mass when possible. I prefer a high mass type feel overall but definitely prefer hearing it in my language, and being able to have communion in the hand, and the increased participation of the OF. It would be ok with me if the priest were ad orientum but not if there is a bunch of mumbling that you can’t understand, the way some people describe the EF. My parish does announcements before mass starts and hands out the bulletins after mass, and I do like that aspect of my parish.

Actually I can offer NO worship to God as I don’t understand the language and have no idea what is going on.

You know, there’s a reason why prior to the advent of the OF Mass that large numbers of the people in the pews at Mass just sat there and said the Rosary the whole time. They had no clue what was going on either.

That’s simply not true. You are familiar with the basic structure of the Mass. You know what is fundamentally happening… Christ’s sacrifice for us is mystically made present on the altar and offered to God. You don’t need language (though it certainly helps) to be aware of that.

I’ll add that if you went on a pilgrimage to Rome, as I have, and avoided attending Mass, even papal Masses, because you don’t speak Italian…that would be beyond tragic for any practicing Catholic. Absolutely tragic.

Actually no. After a thousand OF Masses under my belt I still require verbal cues to know what’s going on, and a missal I can read to know my responses.

Bottom line: There’s NOTHING wrong with Mass in the vernacular.

Well that’s exactly what would happen. Spare me the histrionics.

No one is saying there is anything wrong with Mass in the vernacular. I prefer Mass in English too. What I am blown away by is your assertion that it is impossible for you to worship without English and that you would avoid Mass when travelling in a foreign county. I truly consider that a tragedy.

If a Sunday, It would remain a grave sin regardless of your personal opinions on the matter.
I have worked in non-English speaking countries. If I had decided to skip Mass because of the language barrier, I would still need to go to confession. A bilingual missal always made it a non-issue for me.

Italian Masses are in the vernacular and Italian is easier to sing so what’s the problem?

That’s fine: I can go to confession at the first opportunity with an English speaking priest.

Well, Rome being Rome, one cannot use the excuse of not being able to find a Mass in one’s language, at least for the major languages:

English:

French:

And I’m sure you’ll find Spanish, German, Polish as well.

Hmmm. Do you think that people were “barred” from Mass for centuries? All those great saints who didn’t know Latin?

Before the OF large numbers of people in the pews were saying rosaries all through mass. Kind of pointless just being a warm butt in the seat.
Wow, I can think of a litany of saints from before 1965, who probably didn’t know Latin. All those great saints= warm butts in the seats.?! 🤣 I think you’re missing something…

A. I think you’re missing the point.
B. I’m not going to waste my time arguing with you.
C. This conversation is over.
D. If you continue to address posts to me I WILL flag them for harassment.

I would allow those who could not receive communion to come and have a blessing(yes I know this already being done) but I would like to see it in the rubrics. I would allow priest to have children gather around the altar on certain occasions. I would have the kyrie always in Greek at every mass. I would move the exchange of peace to the beginning as someone else suggested. I would restore St Michael’s prayer at the end of mass. I would require homilies to be no more than 15 minutes. Accommodations would be made for those who wished to kneel for communion. I would outlaw holding of hands if not altogether at least across isles and the pews behind the contortions drive me batty or I would have it officially included with the same restrictions.
