If you could, what changes if any would you make to the Ordinary Form?

WARNING: This is my personal opinion, not an attack on the OF. Feel free to share your opinions, but please keep them rational. Don’t start any Vatican2 bashing or SSPX wars or this thread will be closed.

I myself would omit the Prayers of the Faithful, it feels tedious and drags out too long sometimes, I feel that’s what the Collect is for. I would also forbid communion in the hand, I’m afraid that’s where Satanists are getting sacred hosts for black masses. Encourage ad orientem worship. And prohibit parish announcements during Mass, honestly we have bulletins for a reason. These announcements kinda detract from the reverent atmosphere immediately after receiving communion.

This thread will eventually degenerate. Because this is CAF.

But I would move the Kiss of Peace closer to the beginning of Mass. Maybe after the Homily so as to not distract from the Eucharist. Or maybe just not have it at all like at some OF Masses I’ve seen.

I would also use incense more often. 😆

Goodness, only one thing? If I had to bring only one thing back, the Introibo and the introductory prayers at the beginning of the EF up to the collect.

But really, my main choice would be make the OF a vernacular version of the EF. 😛

I think the OF is missing the Asperges. Who would be against the priest dunking Holy Water on folks before Mass? I know it happens at Easter but it should happen more than that in my opinion.

The OF is missing the Asperges and should have it more often! Who doesn’t want prayers for more protection?

I would not have us sing as many parts as we do now. Masses used to move along faster before we started singing all the responses.

That makes so much sense; a sign of peace to kick things off. Then we can focus on Christ and not awkward hand shakes.

Also incense all the time!!! I went to a mass recently in a very Italian neighborhood and there was so much incense that my clothes smelled of it for the rest of the day

I am quite happy with the way the OF is celebrated at my parish. It’s reverent, prayerful, and the altar servers are so well trained they serve as an example to the rest of us.

I have to admit that the Prayers of the Faithful do sometimes stretch out too long or become too trendy. I receive communion in the hand, but would not object if we returned to communion on the tongue, but no one is accustomed to it anymore.

I do like the idea of having the Asperges on Sunday. The Prayers at the foot of the altar would be a nice addition, but I don’t think they will be added to the OF. And the sign of peace has been at its present location before communion for a long time, both in the EF and the OF. I don’t think it will be moved.

I may be wrong, but I think the Asperges can be done at the beginning of any OF mass, it’s just rarely done.

If it were up to me, the one thing I really wish was in the OF are the prayers at the foot of the altar. I think they’re very beautiful and I don’t understand why they were taken out of the mass.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the OF at my parish (though it would be nice if they offered the EF), but the Prayers of the Faithful and parish announcements are definitely my least favorite parts of the Mass. I’m thankful that my parish kept the communion rail intact after V2, so everyone who is able kneels for communion.

Technically the OF can be celebrated ad orientem, unfortunately this is rarely done.

Honestly, if I had been a V2 father…

It would have been so much easier! just “translate everything. done”

I would do the following:

Add the prayers at the foot of the altar back

Make it Ad Orientem and in Latin

I would abolish the prayers of the faithful and the sign of peace with the laity

I would forbid communion in the hand and standing unless you can’t kneel

I would make it so that the priest holds his thumb and index fingers together after consecrating the host until the ablutions

Basically I would get rid of it all together and go back to the mass of all time.

I think I’ll leave whatever changes to the Bishops. That’s where it belongs.

Oh and I would recommend to them that the congregation stop singing the Our Father. It’s a prayer, not a song.

That’s actually what they did initially with the “transition mass.”
