If you stopped being catholic....

I voted Orthodox, but I think in general, the question is too broad to be answered precisely. I would be Orthodox assuming that Papal Supremacy was shown to be incorrect. The sacraments are still the sacraments and I ultimately need them for spiritual growth and health.

With respect to our Protestant Friends, I could never see myself joining. The concept of personal interpretation of the Bible has lead to far too much division there. Ultimately, if God had meant the Bible to be interpreted that way, he would have made it so that it could not be misinterpreted by the individual. The concept of the Church being the interpreter just makes sense.

If the basic premise of Christianity was undermined, well, I guess that would depend how it was undermined. If a Muslim could convince me that Jesus was never crucified, then it would go along way to converting me. Buddhism though has always attracted me.

Not really, since it’s the closest thing :).

I just wish their was an EO option and an OO option–I’m always interested in why someone would choose one over the other, especially given recent joint Christological statements.
Where do you want me to start?😃

Naturally, I would go OO - the closest thing to Catholicism. I don’t know why there isn’t a separate option for OO.

Blessings,

I am Orthodox Catholic. And I could not foresee leaving the Holy Orthodox Church. But since it is make believe, I would choose the Old Roman Catholic. I have nice childhood memories of the pre-Vatican II praxis.

How would you be able to take the female priests?

Funny how you would prefer a belief and practice that has NO evidence (female priests) over a belief and practice that has at least (in this make-believe world) arguable evidence (papacy).🤷

Marduk

Am I misunderstanding something. I thought Old Roman Catholic meant pre-Vatican II. Were there female priests? What are you talking about? Do you follow my posts around so that you can interject your uncharitable sarcasm?

I agree with the portion about Protestantism. The Church must be the interpreter, just as it was in the Apostles’ time (Council of Jerusalem). Christ didn’t pick certain men for nothing…It just makes sense that they would also pick certain individuals to lead also. All of that is biblical and logical. If not the Church of Rome, then another Apostolic Church is correct…

Also interesting you mention Islam and Jesus not being crucified. From what I’ve learned of Islam and converts to it over time, it seems most are diverted into seeing many purported “truths” of the Qur’an and upon seeing these, the part about Jesus not dying must also be true…or so it follows in their minds.

Yes, but most Old Catholic communities now allow female priests due to their communion with Episcopalianism and liberalism…

Old Catholic is a seperate group from Traditionalist Catholics.
Old Catholics broke off in the 1800 or from their perspective Roman Catholics broke off…depends on where someone is standing…
But not all Old Catholic ordain women. There are so many Old Catholic denominations I would be reluctant to generalize.

Hmmm? Then I suppose I’ll change my answer to High Anglican.

Brother Mickey. Why do you take everything I say as an insult? I think you owe me an apology?

I misunderstood Old Catholic, and you could have simply pointed this out. But you continue with a bit of personal judgement of my (make believe) decision by saying:
Funny how you would prefer a belief and practice…
But of course, I will apologize for my hasty remarks–forgive me.

I was assuming you were familiar with the Old Catholic Churches since you chose them. I assumed you were fully aware of their innovations, so I hope you can understand my distress at your choice. But as you’ve made it clear you were not aware, I also apologize for my comment.

Yes. I plead ignorance. I confused old Catholics with the Traditionalist Catholics. My fond memories are of the old Latin Masses–which I am pleased to see that Pope BVI is bringing back! 🙂

Do not confuse the Old Catholic with SSPX. The Old Catholic Church broke with Rome after Vatican I over the Infallibility issue. Now the Old Catholic Church has no problems with homosexuality and ordains women priests. That is what happens when you break with Rome and lose the Teaching Authority of the Church.

No. That is what happened when the Old Catholics broke from Rome.

When Rome broke from Holy Orthodoxy, She began a process of doctrinal innovations spurred on by the ultra-montanists which led to the reformation and the Old Catholics.

Yeah, I know the answer is “I’ll never stop being catholic” or “the catholic church is the one true church founded on Peter” etc, etc.

But I’m just curious as to where you think the other religions stand as far as “runner up” in Truth. So loosen up. You won’t have to go to confession for voting who takes 2nd place. 🙂

In fairness, I’ll divulge that I am a catholic converting to Orthodoxy.
Eastern Orthodox would be my choice because its maintain Apostolic Succession and it has Seven Sacraments. I could never be Protestant. They are too modern and they distort Scripture.

Interestingly, this is not the case with the Orthodox Churches.

From the RCC perspective, the EO (as well as the OO) broke from the Church a thousand years ago. Yet, despite not being in communion with Rome, the Eastern Orthodox have maintained the Catholic faith to such a degree that even recent Popes have commented on there being very little to prevent a common celebration of the Eucharist between the RCC and the Eastern Churches. In actual fact, Orthodox Christians are allowed to partake in the Catholic sacrament without renouncing any Orthodox beliefs.

We are the Borg. Lower your Bibles and surrender your churches. We will add your liturgical and ecclesiastical distinctiveness to our own. Your rite will adapt to service us. 😃
Oh, that was simply hilarious :rotfl:
