If you were the pope, would you free up the TLM?

When reading the Catholic press and on some Catholic forums like this I get the general impression that there is a significant number of people who would like the Tridentine Mass reintroduced.

I’m old enough to remember it and would be, in principle, in favour. I had the idea [having checked it out with our priest] of testing whether there were any members of our parish who would like to attend a Latin Mass, held every Sunday and organized by the Latin Mass Society. It is held only a few miles from our parish.

After a week there is one name on the list I posted. I’m surprised there weren’t at least a few more names - perhaps from the older members of the parish who remember the Old Mass with affection and would just like to try it again. We are a parish of about 300 people.

Maybe it’s just early days so I’ll leave the list up for a few more weeks. On the other hand, maybe there isn’t much enthusiasm for it after all?

I’ve heard it said that there is a shortage of vocations to the Priesthood but no shortage of vocations to the Papacy.

It takes a while. People are usually creatures of habit. All you can really do at this point is to plant seeds. Sometimes they take a lifetime to sprout.

*]Make the Feast of the Kingship of Jesus Christ over all men & societies a Holiday of Obligation
*]Give serious consideration to the possibility of letting bishops be elected by their people, as they used to be
Isn’t the Kingship since it lands on a Sunday an obligation anyway?

Allowing bishops to be elected…might that not become a bit problematic? (Not to mention decrease in sermon quality—vote for Fr. X)

It’s just a question on an internet forum. It’s not brain surgery.

I think we all need to stop taking ourselves so seriously. Naturally, things would be different if any one of us became pope. I personally think the person on this forum who would make the best pope is paramedicgirl. 😉
The best pope is the one with objectivity and deep love and care for the faithful. I agree people need to stop taking themselves so seriously. 😉 There’s a reason it’s taking so long. I voted no because I think it’s too hard to sit in our comfortable living rooms completely distant from the reality of the Vatican. It’s easy to say you would do it, but come on…it’s more complicated then we can imagine. I thank God no pope just jumps and makes any changes quickly. Their lead by the Holy Spirit not their own personal preference, praise God for that 👍

Do you know if there are priests who don’t know Latin? I am not sure. If there are, how long do you think it takes them to learn the language and be able to understand fully when celebrating the Mass in Latin?
Actually, many of the Priests I served Mass for didn’t know Latin well enough to converse in it either and it common knowledge that at Vatican II the Latin used by some of the attendees was absolutely atrocious… But the Priests did know the prayers. I wouldn’t think a working knowledge of Latin would be necessary today anymore than it was fifty years ago and it really wouldn’t take that long to learn the prayers especially since they use the Altar Cards as a memory aid. It has also been pointed out on this forum that the Priest is supposed to read from the cards anyway. If a Priest applied himself I would think he could learn the prayers in less than a month and probably sooner than that.

You obviously lack confidence in the Priests abilities. That is a very sad thing.

I asked this question and my priest told me he could wouldn’t have any problems with it, he just needs it in front of him. He threw in a bit of Latin on Palm Sunday which was cool 🙂

Pope Paul VI did just that—with the NO.

I would free it up in a heartbeat. If I was the Pope I might even replace the Novus Ordo with the Tridentine Mass. The Latin Mass was never and can never be abolished. Please read Quo Primum by Pope Pius V: it is illegal to get abolish the beautiful (Tridentine) Latin Mass.

Point taken 😉 but as many say on here, it was all in how it was implemented not the actual document or the council. The changes in my opinion needed to happen. But I think we are getting off topic from the OP.

If I were Pope, I would help to do away with hunger, poverty, bigotry. Encourage prayer for peace and tolerance. Maybe get back to what we are suppose to be doing as Christians and stop focusing so much attention on ourselves and what “we” want during the Mass. Just a thought.

I do not believe the Council called for the radical change that happend with the Mass of Pope Paul VI.

Just a thought. Since you did come on to this thread to contribute–it would seem you want as much attention as what you are describing above.

Confused?–Well let me clarify. You brought up — to stop focusing attention on what “we” want during Mass. Since you are contributing to this thread—it applies that you are part of what you object to. That sort of negates the whole essence of your statements.

Oh so you feel I’m stating what I want yet criticizing other’s for stating what they want? Do I have that correct?

You seem a tad upset—Was it something I said.

No not at all, I just wasn’t sure if I had that correct or not. Honestly just confused. Unfortunately, we don’t have voice tone 🙂 did I explain what you were trying to say?
