IMO, he doesn’t know the finances of the individuals in the congregation. Vanity plates are expensive. That wasn’t well-thought out on his part; I know he was passionate about his subject, but not a good idea. And, one has to engage people in dialog, not turn your back on them if they don’t agree with you 100%
Last I looked they were $35 bucks. A full tank of gas.

If you can afford to drive, you can afford the gas. No doubt for really poor people, he’d give you an out of necessity, as normal as nothing binds when there’s necessity.

Of course if you’re just ‘American’ poor rather than ‘Third World’ poor, it’s not -that- impressive. If you wanted to be really stingy I suppose you could hold back your tithe for however long it takes you to give that much.

the funny thing is that you cannot be truly Catholic if you are pro-choice.

i took the liberty of editing your comment btw
I wrote what I wanted to write. Please leave my words the hell alone. Make your own comments all you want, but do not edit mine to serve your purpose. I edited it back, thank you very much.

that was rude and ignorant of me i do apologize to you Lutheranteach, all i can ask is that you forgive me.

i do want to say that i believe pro-choice=pro-murder, but i did not have the right to be an a-hole about my beliefs.

as i have said i am sorry, not that you need permission, but if you think that warrants it you should report my post.

the counter argument will be

as to the second part of your comment that is intense i have only been to two confessions where the priest has told me to do something other than say Hail Mary’s and Our Father’s. not to say that the priests did not give VERY good advise but they just gave (in my opinion) weak penances. i believe that i am called to the priesthood, and i know that once i am a priest (if God is willing of course) all of the people are going to be like "stay away from confession when Father Eddie is in there he gives harsh penances. i am not going to make the harsh on purpose but they are not going to be like oh well you smoked pot for 10 years oh ok say a couple hail Marys and our fathers
I have the same kind of fellow. I try to give 1000% to the 1-2 Ave Marias I get, then just do the extra penance on the side. Asked him once for more, he wouldn’t give it, abided by his decision and did the above. I think he was pleased when I told him because of his penances I did 1000%. Certainly helped me.

I wonder what I’ll get for this thread?

Some saint priests make up for what is lacking in their penitents penances by scourging themselves to the blood, but I don’t think most of the 1-2 Ave priests are going to be doing that for us nowadays…

If you are to become a priest, I’d like to say you should likely go to a traditional seminary like the F.S.S.P., I would probably recommend, or perhaps the Institute of Christ the King. One single flaw in formation can be a soul killer… I’ll pray for your vocation… pray you find the right place.

As a rule priests don’t give the entire penance due to sin in the Confessional, one is expected to make it up on the side.

This also applies to all the standard penances for specific sins given in the penitential of St. Charles Borromeo, which more fully represent the real penance due for each sin as determined by God. . .

You can get an idea of how the standard penitentials went to a certain degree by looking at the old way indulgences used to be specified, in other words they were indulgences measured by penances on earth… a century of days of quarantine, pilgrimages to various shrines…

Pope Paul VI greatly reduced the amount of penance indulgences were worth by downsizing the amount incalculably (erasing all the previous Popes’, bishops, etc. indulgences), btw, the new ‘partial indulgence’ is only worth exactly as much as whatever it is attached to. One Hail Mary is now worth whatever you put into it, times two, not times one hundred.

When I think this hadn’t happened yet when Fatima happened with an angel already crying, “Penance! Penance!” gives me a little chill.

Well I am going off on a tangent… But… There’s a lot lacking in catechesis these days you don’t get unless you go traditional.

Pray St. Peter and the holy apostles guide you to become a fisher of men!

i am going to college for 2-4 years (for theology an also so i can make money to help support me while im in seminary. ) but i was defiantly thinking FSSP or Institute of Christ the King… i cannot see myself saying th Novus Ordo.

Note the fine a little further down…

So if your priest gives you the money for the plates, then you’ll do it? Feeling a little chintzy lately by any chance?

How do you afford to buy gas? 🙂

That would be the counter counter argument, if you can call the first a counter argument.
That’s pathetic. BTW, have you sold everything you own and given to the poor? Jesus said to do that.

No kidding. It’s hard for the holier than thou to understand that. I’ve said the same thing over and over and over. But shin is one of those that defends cold blooded murder of a murderer.

I don’t know what that means. It’s physically and spiritually impossible to give more than 100%. Are you bragging to make up for deficiencies?

Wow, I didn’t expect this. So, just to clear up a few points. (I am the op btw).
  • This was a visiting Priest. Not the Parish Priest and not a Priest that usually hears confessions at this parish.
  • I am not against pro-life vanity plates, bumper stickers, etc. But I don’t believe that this Priest has the authority to hold everyone present to the sin of omission for not buying the plates.
  • Of course Catholics are called to be pro-life, but telling people that if they are not then they shouldn’t be here is like going to a doctors office and saying if your sick you should go home. Of course, anyone in mortal sin should not take communion. I don’t see how this even came up in this thread.
  • The rudeness of the Priest after the Mass or rather his refusal to talk about his statements is inexcusable. He didn’t know me. Suppose this was my first time coming to a Catholic Church? Do you think I’d ever be back again?
Beyond that, all the discussion about selling your goods, the Priest’s authority to levy penance and such, really hasn’t much to do with what happened. I did send an email to the Parish Priest expressing my concerns but have yet to hear back. Please, don’t attack the Priest or each other in this thread.

He certainly did get me thinking and I wasn’t even there.
  1. He’s arrogant and has no place doing that at Mass
  2. Many cannot afford the cost of vanity plates.
  3. He should have taken the money that was spent on that costly plate and
    a. contributed it to a pro-life organization
    b. a house for pregnant women that are not having an abortion
    c. Food for the Poor
    d. on and on
I agree. Some people can’t even afford a vehicle to begin with–at my own parish, I notice some other fellow parishioners either get rides to mass or just walk/bike. The money ought to go toward a pregnancy crisis organization. The local government probably takes a decent cut of the money that goes toward purchasing the vanity plate.

By the by, was this homily follow Luke 10:25-37? How did the priest even manage to tie this homily to that gospel reading?

Yes, this was following the reading of the Parable of the Good Samaritan. The tie in was to the question put to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” The visiting Priest said that the unborn were our neighbors and that we were bound to protect them.

And as far as that goes, he is correct. Insulting people during Mass and telling them to purchase a particular item (not knowing whether they were affordable to them) borders on serious sin.

Especially with the tabernacle sitting close by.

The money could go for helping women in a position of being pregnant and nowhere to turn, or many other pro-life organizations.
Makes sense to me. The real pro-life people I know spend the time and money to do just that. Encouragement and medical help to the pregnant women and help after birth goes a long way.

And there ya go!!! 👍

How can you possibly see a priest turning his back on a parishioner as being productive? How can you possibly see a priest telling people that they should go out and get a particular vanity plate? I think he’s rude. Abortion is a terrible evil. That priest had many better ways to get that across. ARROGANCE on his part.

I just saw him on his boat.
Perhaps this priest (May God Bless Him) was completely disgusted with the pro choice (read pro abortion) “catholics” he sees promoting, either directly, or remotely by voting for it, abortion. Also the fence sitters who just can’t seem to stand up for the unborn. I don’t agree with the “forced” license plates, although I think they are a great idea if one chooses freely to get one, but I do agree with everything else he said. I believe telling him after Mass that one didn’t like his homily also hints of arrogance. Perhaps some “thought” on both sides would have been appropriate and the turning of the back didn’t need to have happened.

He is on the right path.

“If you’re not pro life you shouldn’t be here.” With this statement a visiting Priest at our Church started his homily today. He went on to hold up a pro-life license plate and said that we were committing a sin of omission if we didn’t all go home and purchase these pro life plates from our DMV.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m pro-life, 100%. But this is bordering on crazy.

After the Mass, I shook hands with the Priest and told him that I disagreed with his holding us to a sin of omission. He said, “Believe what you want!” and turned away.

I pray that there was no one on the fence about abortion in attendance today that may have been turned away from the Church by this man’s callus remark. I sent an email to our Parish Priest letting him know about this incident.

I wonder, could this have been a demon sent to drive people away from the Church?
Or maybe an angel to wake some people up?

HUH? You mean on the right path to drive people away? Repeatedly I’ve stated that he was arrogant. He doesn’t know what people in that parish do to work against abortion. They may well do more than blow their own horn from a podium and act like a holier than thou pompous, self righteous fool.

Maybe that’s why he has no parish of his own. Maybe it’s time to give the bishops credit for refusing him to poison the local parishes on a continuous basis.

Thanks for waking me up to that possibility.

The only reason we go to Mass is to worship God and receive the Eucharist. Now, if this priest would have said something to the affect that the license plate was a good way to show your position about the awful sin of abortion, that’s one thing. And I wouldn’t argue with that. But he told people categorically to buy one. Wasted money!

The money could go for helping women in a position of being pregnant and nowhere to turn, or many other pro-life organizations. Instead he was telling the people to pay extra money for a license plate. Did you ever consider that the money might be going to support abortion? Do you tell your state how to spend the taxes you pay? If you are able to then you are a very lucky person. 99.9999% of us can’t.

So, go and buy the plate and see where the added revenue goes.
I don’t endorse forcing anyone to buy anything, but the bottom line of what I think this Priest was trying to say, possibly not in the best way, is that our fight against abortion needs to be made as public as possible. I think most Catholics are much too complacent in their stand against abortion because we think we must show love and tolerance to anyone and everyone. We mustn’t get a bumper sticker because it will ruin the overall “effect” of our cars, we mustn’t say anything contrary to the pro choice opinion even of a friend for fear we will lose that friendship. And heaven forbid, a priest who is trying to bring the Culture of Life to a Parish must not be allowed to speak, even with the best of intentions, to bring this terrible anti life issue to the attention of the parish.

Let me ask this. If, Heaven forbid, this priest would have made a statement from the pulpit saying pro choice is acceptable, would anyone here have gone up to him after Mass and told him he was wrong…? Think about it.

Have you bought your license plate? Have you sold all your possessions to follow Christ?

YOU HAVEN’T???

Tisk! Tisk! 🙂
Have You?? The first stone and all that you know. Pride cometh before a fall. Now where did I hear that???
