I admit that I can argue BOTH sides of illegal immigration.
If my family was poor and hungry, I would immigrate illegally too to provide for them OUT OF LOVE. I would be as respectful as I could of the country I was in.
I continue to believe, without statistics, that the vast majority of illegals are here with the best of intentions and create more good than harm. Yet, there is a percentage that are here to do harm. How to sort them out and deal appropriately with each is the problem.
My “tilt meter” is with the illegals because THERE, BUT FOR THE GRACE OF GOD, GO I. The greatest commandment is to love one another as God loves us. That commandment is not limited to fellow authorized countrymen.
Yet, I also see the tolerance of illegal entry to this country as being tantamount to the expectation that one also has the right to enter into my home at anytime for any reason and stay as long as he likes. My home, my country. One is small the other large but the principle seems to be the same. Illegal entry is illegal entry small or large.
Some argue that illegal immigration is choosing the greater good. But that seems awfully close to the ends justify the means. As I said above, I could see me doing the same if my family was hurting.
A good portion of our taxes go to providing social services. Most of us pay more for medical care because part of what we pay covers teh services to others who cannot or will not pay. Most of us give more to church and charities. Make more money, share more with the poor. Happy to do so. The very rich have foundations. Warren Buffet is giving yet another BILLION dollars. America is very charitible in many ways. But forcing your hand into my pocket is completely different than me willingly sharing.
I get confused by seeing the limits for LEGAL immigration and the lack of limits for ILLEGAL immigration. I’ll visit Canada in 2 weeks. IF I ever had a DUI, I would need special permission (long lead time) to enter, not to mooch, but to SPEND MY MONEY THERE. I need a passport to RE-ENTER America, the land of my birth. My driver’s license is insufficient, as is my US military ID.
Well, I am capable of complying with the law, so I must and I do. But those who are not capable or unwilling to comply do not have to comply?
It is a puzzlement.
Bottom line, OUT OF LOVE AND GRATITUDE FOR MY SUCCESS, I cannot kick those who are down on their luck in life. There has got to be a better way to balance justice and charity without kicking the downtrodden or each other.
