Those of us in the GREAT (it is, folks!) NW have much to be grateful for, but, living in liberalland can make a guy ashamed to be a part of it:

Mrs. America Marriage Bias?
Portland, Oregon mayor Tom Potter ([search](javascript:siteSearch(‘Tom Potter’);)) has refused to endorse the Mrs. Oregon America ([search](javascript:siteSearch(‘Mrs. Oregon America’);)) beauty pageant being held in the city because contestants must be married to a man. Potter, who once drew fire for marching in Portland’s gay right’s parade in full uniform as the city’s police chief, says pageant rules — quote — “fail to recognize the other loving relationships in our community.” The pageant’s director tells the Oregonian she’s disappointed with the decision — since the rule was written to keep politics out of the event. She added that, as far as she knows, no lesbians have entered the pageant.

What? No takers?? LisaN?? otm?? BLB??
Just saw it. She was on Lars Larson yesterday explaining that she was STUNNED at the decision, particularly as other paegents have the same requirement but do not make it an issue. Tom Potter has a lesbian daughter and there is a city councilman, Sam Adams who is “proudly” a homosexual. 'scuse me while I HURL. As Lars said Potter is such a nut we may start longing for the days of Vera Katz. (former mayer and a looney liberal of high order)

But come on what do you expect? THere is a reason I call this the land of fruits, nuts and flakes.

That’s because there’s no “buzz cut and combat boot” competition.

Well along with banning lesbians from Mrs. America, Tom Potter also wants Portland OUT of the joint terrorism task force. This in the city that has a group of seven convicted terrorists who were trying to join the Taliban and had plans to blow up a Jewish school. Oh and there is the islamist in southern Oregon running a terrorist website. But hey, why do we need help? I guess we can protect ourselves right? Oh he probably doesn’t want citizens to keep an bear arms either.

I wouldn’t waste much breath on something so trivial as local beauty contest. Who cares?

Y’know, I was born in Portland. Lived in M. County till I was six. Then off to Washington and Wyoming.

While Washington is not exactly a great place for anti-liberals, reading this convinces me that leaving Portland all those years ago was the smartest thing my parents ever did.

Vera Katz might have been a little nutty, but I already miss her. 😃

Yes, well, there’s also a brouhaha over one of the Rose Festival ambassadors (the girls representing each high school gradually quit calling themselves princesses–this did not come down from on high) being selected in spite of having given birth about two months ago. Let us just say that she also had no claim on the title “Mrs.”. Even in Portland, that has sparked some outrage. Although the girl’s choices have obviously been lacking, I admire the girl’s life values and her determination to step up and take responsibility for her actions. Nevetheless, she has taken on a very big job in becoming a mother, and the jury is still far, far out on whether she will be equal to the enormous task before her. I’d stop short of putting a scarlet letter on her, but a suitable “maternity leave” would be appropriate before deciding she would be a good selection, at the very least!

I’ve lived in Berkeley, CA, and in Portland, OR… Berkeley is FAR more liberal, no question. In Berkeley, the conservatives are the Democrats and the liberals are just plain radicals–and they’d be the first to say so. It is EarthFirst! central down there. I won’t get started on the “nude-ins” that were held during a debate on what the public decency laws should be. The only Republicans in Berkeley are the University of California Regents and the students in the Young Republicans Club on campus. (As nearly as I can tell, other Republicans may own land in Berkeley, but they are required to live in Oakland.)

Is Alameda County more liberal than Multnomah County? Oh, I don’t know. That is a fairly hard call, and probably not worth the worry. There are many poor being fed, clothed, and given dignity in Portland and in Berkeley. You may call them misguided, but there are also many who make sacrifices in the cause of peace. If you know of a municipality without its blind side, you know more than I… and Lord never said the sheep would be divided from the goats based on their superior ability to look down their noses at the other sinners.

Oh my. I don’t know how concern about pulling out of the joint terrorism task force and dismay that our mayor rides with a group of anarchists and refuses to allow a beauty pagaent that doesn’t consider lesbians the marrying kind, has somehow morphed into not wanting to feed the poor and hungry.

I have NOT said people who feed the hungry are ‘misguided’ and have been supportive of the food bank, a homeless shelter and now our parish is helping to sponsor a hot meal program. Why is it if you have conservative views on political matters it must mean you are a heartless and uncompassionate miser?

Exactly.

Hey dont forget me, I live in Portland!
I saw a bumper sticker the other day saying “keep portland weird” and I just shook my head.

Worse yet, I was reading the trash PSU newspaper and the writers are pure trash. Like this one guy wrote how he was glad Terri was not being fed and he hoped she would die, he agreed with the husband and thought that removing food from that kind of people was a good thing. But he didnt stop there, he went on to say that he doesnt support the death penalty and likes abortion, all in less than 500 words. And nobody can say anything because those guys run the papers.

I once lived in Portland, and I must admit it was a somewhat liberal town, but we found a wonderful parish in Gresham (a suburb North of Portland) called St. Anne’s that made a huge difference in our family’s lives. The Priest was a Theology teacher at the collage and the people were warm and welcoming. We attended classes on RCIA, Death and dying, and Bible studies. We were only there for 2 years, but it was such a enriching 2 years. So, I must say that I know there are a lot of wonderful people in Portland, and I hope anyone who is in despair over the liberal slant on things will seek out those communities of good people.

Oh, no… you misunderstand me. I am saying rather that these very liberal cities do have their good points. What I meant was that there are many local people here in Portland whom I would consider very misguided when it comes to their politics who are nevertheless commendable in other aspects of how they lived their lives.

I absolutely did not mean to anything negative about conservatives. I just didn’t want to jump up and down on Portland and Berkeley without mentioning what I admired about them, too. And we may point out the sins of others–fraternal correction is our duty-- but never without staying in the full knowledge that we, too, are sinners, and have no business to assume we have racked up a more favorable rating with the Almighty than anyone else. That is what the line about looking down noses was meant to say.

I can see why you might have taken me that way, though. If I have a big problem with Oregon politics, it is growing tendency to demonize opponents. Far too often, what I wrote would have been meant exactly as you took it. It is almost as if you have either choice (A) as to your politics or choice (B) and that’s it. “Oh, you don’t approve of homosexual marriage? You must be one of those selfish, bigoted people who want the rich to keep getting richer and the civil rights laws to all be repealed.” “Oh, you don’t approve of gun control? You must be one of these right-wing lunatics with two years worth of food and 15,000 rounds of ammunition in your basement.” It drives me utterly nuts. So no, “A lot of liberals make sacrifices for the less fortunate” DOES NOT IMPLY that none of the conservatives do! It doesn’t even imply that liberals are better than conservatives at feeding the poor!

I actually have a friend who essentially said that my parish must be full of rich people, because we follow the rubrics of the Mass. Compliance to Church Rules = Rich. Ack!!!
