Right.In fairness, I don’t think I’ve seen @Gorgias declare that anyone was going to hell for doing or not doing something.
We’re just talking about whether there’s any point to discussing the liceity – that is, the legality – of an act, or whether the only thing worth talking about is the results of that act.
Now, there are a couple different cases here, and we’d evaluate them differently:
- A Catholic cleric baptizes a person
- A non-Catholic Christian baptizes a person
- A Catholic layperson baptizes a person who is not in danger of death
Only one of these is a licit action. (Another is illicit, and the third – since it is not an action performed by a Catholic – is not subject to the discussion of liceity under canon law.)
