JJJ4Eva, I can’t imagine where you are getting all this stuff about Jesus writing the secret. Are you listening to Oprah too much???

Why take as truth something written in a novel over that of Scripture which is the Word of God. There is a big difference.

BTW, Jesus says blessed are the poor, so He would not try to be Bill Gates.

mdcpensive1

Hi Mdcpensive1, No Jesus did not say blessed are the poor, He did say this:

3"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called sons of God.
10Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11"Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

And He gave the meek the Earth, when you think meek nations, do you think of the one Ghandi came from perhaps, see how they are inheriting. Do you perhaps think of the Chinese, think of their growth, this is an amazing turn of events. The very brash American seems a bit left out of late… Just try thinking outside the box, the box is closed. There are other alternatives to the teachings, there are messages that run very deep. I’m waiting for the Australian to reply, because he/she will know the difference between a novel and a non-fiction work.

God bless you abundantly on this Glorious Friday. It is a day of beauty once more.
JJJ4Eva

Hi Mdcpensive1, No Jesus did not say blessed are the poor, He did say this:
3"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
Jesus had an affinity for the poor because he was one himself. In Jewish tradition if you are poor the presentation at the temple was the cost of two doves.

Yes it is a blest Friday and I wish you well. I hope when you think outside the box that you are not thinking differently than Jesus thinks.

I have read the passages in John but how come only Catholics see Apostolic Succession in them?
All churches that have preserved the Apostolic succession see them that way. This includes the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental, and Coptic Churches. All these can trace their succession back to the apostles.
I see that Catholics have an interpretation of the Scriptures that is very different from other churches.
This is true. We interpret them in the light of what the Apostles believed and taught. Other Churches separated themselves from that about 500 years ago, and every generation gets further and further away from what the Apostles believed and taught.
Code:
Not necessarily wrong but different. Is our evidence for Apostolic succession, the primacy of Peter and the Eucharist as real presence is truly..true, why are we single in believing it that way?
Becuase Jesus sent the HS to guide the Church “into all truth”, and promised that the “gates of hell” (teaching error) would not prevail against the Church. It is His power and promises that preserve the Church.
Why don’t the other churches have sacraments?
They had to abandon the sacramental life of the Church beceaus it required a valid priesthood. When they disconnected from the Apostolic Succession, there were no longer any valid orders, and therefore, the sacraments could not be cathected.
Because they see them as twists in the doctrine. They see the sacraments as mere, over glorified rituals.
Once they jettisoned the authority appointed by Christ, they had to find a way to justify this disobedience.
Yes Catholicism does have the ritual element of Judaism but didn’t Jesus condemn the law-stickling traditions of the pharisees?
Yes, law stickling is condemnable. But you notice that Jesus upheld and practiced all the rituals given to the Jews by God?Human beings were made to connect to the Holy through ritual. This is why God provided these rituals. The Protestants have replaced the rituals that God instituted with their own inventions.
maybe I’m playing devil’s advocate here…
This is good. If doing so helps you to pose and resolve your questions it will help you. It will strengthen your faith, because there is no devil that Jesus has not triumphed over!
By the way I think Pope Benedict XVI is awesome but as to his writings which I have read a few of, why does he often use pagan philosophy as a source? Maybe I’m overlooking something but I think pagan elements can threaten our purity. It is precisely these elements that has Protestants accusing us of being stained with pagan doctrine.
I don’t know that he often uses pagan philosphy as a source, but he is a professor, and is widely read. I am sure he uses whatever sources best help him make his point. If you read his book, Jesus of Nazareth, I think this is plain.

Protestants accuse Catholics of Paganism because they don’t undestand the faith of the Apostles. The disciples understood that they were to take the world by storm. The Church took over the pagan temples, and pagan holidays, sanctified them, and offered them to Jesus.

I think it’s amazing how the same book used to attack us is the same book that supports our faith. When are people going to see the Bible as a teacher and not as a weapon?
This is exactly the problem latingirl. People DO see the Bible as a teacher. Often on these threads you will see them use the phrase “the bible teaches”. However, this is a myth. The Bible does not teach. People teach. Jesus gave the authority for teaching to His apostles. Teaching is something that people do, not books, Holy though they may be. Teaching requires acts of the will, authority, discernment, and other characteristics not possessed of the Holy Writings, but which belong only to people. In reality, when they believe the “bible teaches” they are using their own opinion, and replacing the teaching authority appointed by Christ by their own. As long as they do this, they Holy Scripture will be used as a weapon against truth.
People often try to use the Bible in attacking Catholics and it’s easy to get caught up on those attacks. You start asking yourself “what if their right”
Yes, and it is a good question to ask. this is where good Apologists begin! 👍
I was doubting whether priests had any authority at all to consecrate the Eucharist but even as he lifted the host into the air I said “My Lord and My God.” I suddenly remember that those were the same words uttered by Thomas upon feeling Christ’s wounded body. The Eucharist always does stuff like that. :gopray2:
Yes. Remember how the disciples on the road to Emmaus recognized Him in the breaking of the bread?

Code:
Hi Yinekka, I perhaps read differently to the way most people do, or interpret I suppose; Pilate called a Jew into his offices, this would never be, Jews were looked down upon.
This is true. There is no scriptural or historical evidence to support what you say here. This would constitute an “imaginal” interpretion.
Pilate’s attitude was very different to what one would expect (he keeps asking for Jesus to be pardoned), even his wife came in, supposedly to chat about a dream.
This is more fiction.
Code:
People make a fuss about celebrities, which Jesus was, but what if Bill Gates walked into your office, no matter how much you don’t care about Microsoft, you would want to meet this man, who is a self-made billionaire. Money does that.
comparing a man who owned nothing and was homeless to Bill Gates seems quite absurd.
Code:
Jesus had a tomb, a brand-new tomb, bought for Him.
More fiction.
Code:
Some rich man just happened along and did it, perhaps they had investments together, there is nothing to dispute that notion, how else did He survive?
On the contrary, there is quite a bit of evidence that disputes each of your imaginative interpretions.
Code:
He got hungry. He looked after less fortunate people. He cared about the sick and the dying. Jesus wrote The Secret –
Is that what you call His writing in the sand? If so, I agree. I have always imaginatively speculated that he was writing the secrets of the souls of those present - their sins.
It’s up to us to read it in His parables and in the blatant lines that we pass over so quickly.
It seems quite clear that you have done quite a bit of blatant passing over quickly 😉
Code:
He was worth so much money, that Judas sold out on Him. Why was Judas offered such a large sum of money? Was Jesus perhaps making such a lucrative income that a hit was put out on Him?
This is not what the Scripture says. 🤷
Code:
Money is the root of all evil,
This is another falsehood.
and the killing of Jesus was orchestrated perhaps, for the benefit of the income of the Pharisees?
No.
Code:
When Jesus was tortured, His garments were removed from Him – His garments were seamless, specially made (possible by Egyptians, for He was Egyptian too).
No, and No.
So I image an undergarment, linens, silks, a full-length shift, a cloak, belts and sandals. They must’ve made an impression, because no one wanted them ruined during the beatings.
Apparently you are quite impressed with your own imagination. 😃

I must admit, it is quite impressive! Have you ever thought of writing a book? Another book with similar fiction made it big on the market. It was called The Da Vinci Code.
Code:
Here are some Gospel passages to ponder:
Matthew 27:18 For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him. Why were they envious? Because Jesus was holy? No because Jesus was rich is more likely –
No. Scripture tells us that it was because the people followed Him.
Code:
John 12:43for they loved praise from men more than praise from God.
There ya have it!
Code:
Matthew 27- 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
Who do you think “they” are?
Code:
John 12:4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, 5"Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages." 6He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it. 7"Leave her alone," Jesus replied. " It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. 8You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me." - Apparently, Jesus didn’t mind luxury...
It was not about luxury, but about the woman’s faith and value of HIm. She was willing to give a years’ worth of wages, because she was grateful to HIm for saving her soul.

If you are really interested in learning about Christianity, you may want to consider starting by reading what is in the Bible, instead of making it up as you go along.

Hi Guanophore, actually, historically the Jews were used as avatars in the blood-sports of the Romans. Titus and Vespasian ate Jews for breakfast in the conquering of Judea during the time of Jesus’ life – the Gladiators went into action to put the Jews in place, so yeah, they were looked down on.
Jesus taught us to care, to love one another, that is all The Secret says as well.
There is no man who can stand before another and say it is not true what you believe, for the belief of a man comes from is soul not his mind. You know the higher feelings inside of you, follow that truth for it is your truth. My TRUTH is this. Do not belittle the very beauty of how I see my God, for He is within as He is within you. When He calls upon you, do you hear, or are you so busy challenging others that you forget to be still and know the He is Lord. I do not believe in the Gospel as though it is Gospel truth, for the Church has evolved so much from there, but I have studied the Gospel’s enough to come to this conclusion. The Doctors of the Church and Our Lady’s Apparitions have in many ways taught us more insightful things long after the Gospel’s. I also do not believe in the Gospel as the whole truth, for I believe with utter conviction that Jesus is The Way The Truth and The Life. Following the books alone would not have lead me to the conclusion I have come to, it is not imagination for then I would be concocting up something that isn’t there, but it is my interpretation. God wants nothing but to prepare a feast for you. You are meant for that wealth. You are not meant to be poor. You get to that wealth by caring. You get there by loving.

May our Lady’s Wisdom be on all of us.
One of the things that our Blessed Mother wants us to do is to “Do as He says”. The Gospels are the Good News of Jesus so are about what He wants us to know. There have been many before you that thought they knew a personal interpretation of what the Gospels were supposed to mean, but that is not how Jesus wants us to interpret. He has given that task to the Church He established because it is the Church that is the one who guarantees the truth, not us individually. If we think about what the meaning of scripture is we have to think with the mind of the Church. In the Old Covenant, He raised prophets to give advice to the Chosen People. In the New Covenant, He gave us the Church to give us the guidance and understanding.

Truth is the truth. There is not your truth and my truth, but just the truth. That is what all of us should be searching for because truth does not contradict itself. Please rely on “the rock” established by Christ, (the Church founded on Peter and his successors) in your search because it is what will give us what we need.

Hi, I’m a new Catholic.
I thought this would be a good place to come.

When sharing my salvation story with Protestant friends…and strangers ( I just can’t keep it in) I constantly hear of the Church’s “false doctrines” We are accused of twisting and ading to the Scriptures (by teachings such as those of Ignatius, Clement and Augustine). I think that to dismiss ANY extra-Biblical evidence of Christianity is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen. All the laws and teachings for every facet of Christianity MUST be in the Bible or else it’s false.
O Scriptura! (sorry Carmina Burana pun)

I am told that while an earnest Christian, I should leave the Catholic church because “they messed everything up” What did they mess up? They ask me why I decide to stay in a church so ridden with error. What errors am I facing?

Granted the Catholic Church has a horrible record of persecution and power-abuse, but does that make the entire faith false?
I’m beginning to have doubts about the saints, Mary and Apostolic Sucession. I mean can men really have powers only meant for Christ?

I have been searching for the face of Christ since my Confirmation and feel His presence in the Eucharist. When you get down to Scriptural evidence, even Baptists have to second-guess their assumption the Lord’s Supper is a symbol.
I’m worried about the Church’s doctrines, do we put too much importance on tradition? Why do our traditions seem “ritualistic” in comparison to the simple Gospel of the Apostles? Why does the Pope wear a golden ring when Christ wore a crown of thorns? Why do we in fact (though not descended from pagan religions) have so much in common with them?

I want to be finally home. I don’t want to believe that God tricked me (or even worse Satan).

**Help me! **
Don’t panic. Protestants throw a lot of stuff at you, but trust me, NONE of it sticks.

You just have some homework to do.

Best approach? Ask one question at a time, and start a new thread for each new question. We’ll give you the answers and lots of supporting documentation.

Welcome to CAF!

Wow, alot has gone on since I last checked this thread. 😃
I will think up my questions, write them down and pose them individually. That’s good advice.
I also need to start…er finish reading the Gospels.

Can someone perhaps tell me why the Eucharist makes me feel odd…like everything at Mass suddenly gets surrealistic? Kind of frozen. I fear I’m becomming delerious. 😛

latingirl, there are many on the CAF that would love to help you get the answers you need because we have been helped also by others here.

The Eucharist is special and personal. Please remember your feelings at the time you receive and pray as this could be a special time for you.

mdcpensive1

vero est! Yes, it is special. I believe if anything, the Eucharist will keep me attached to the faith, no matter what doubts I have.

I had similar problems when I was growing up and learning about the faith. I highly suggest reading “This is the Faith” so that you can educate yourself about what it is that the Church teaches and how, specifically, these teachings differ from the protestants’.

you are overshadowed by the Power of God present in the eucharist. By it, our own puny human power is dwarfed. At Mass we enter into the heavenly banquet, and are there, as well as here at the same time. It is surreal. IT was meant to be! 👍

Hey…
Born Catholic here… Became protestant in my early 40s… Came back to Catholic Church 3 years later after listening to Scott Hahn and Karl Keating… Now I am having major second thoughts.

I am doing a little fense sitting right now myself. The Catholic faith is NOT really found in the Bible. It is found in the Bible and tradition. I am not going to torture myself with this again.

I am going to seek Christ wherever I wind up attending church.
Catholicism has some great arguements for their doctrings. But then so do protestants! The most brilliant minds in the world cannot agree on the religion. I have given up on trying to figure it out.

Just wanted to let you know there are probably a lot of us out here!

🙂

I have read the passages in John but how come only Catholics see Apostolic Succession in them?

I see that Catholics have an interpretation of the Scriptures that is very different from other churches. Not necessarily wrong but different.
Perhaps it’s because Protestantism is something entirely NEW.

It’s as simple as the Catholic Church being consistent and orthodox throughout the 2,000 years of its existence.

Compare the large bulk of beliefs of Protestantism to the teachings of the early Church Fathers, who were the first bishops and leaders of the Church. They were the mean who knew the apostles; the fathers had direct connections to the teachings of the apostles. “Now it ought to be known that the holy apostles, in preaching the faith of Christ, delivered themselves with the utmost clearness on certain points which they believed to be necessary to every one” (Origin, First Principles, Preface 3).

Parts of the Catholic faith can be found in the Bible… Yes!
But an awful lot has been added… Mandatory church customs through the centuries were many.
**
“mandatory church customs”
** The difference is doctrine & discipline, Tradition & traditons (i.e., customs, practices).
“an awful lot has been added”
We wouldn’t say so. Do you believe in a development of doctrine? There’s definitely a further understanding in God’s Revelation. Won’t you agree? For example, it took some time for the Early Church to define the Trinity in the best of ways.

Here’s a good example from Origen:

Then, Thirdly, the apostles related that the Holy Spirit was associated in honour and dignity with the Father and the Son. But in His case it is not clearly distinguished whether He is to be regarded as born or innate, or also as a Son of God or not: for these are points which have to be inquired into out of sacred Scripture according to the best of our ability, and which demand careful investigation. (Origen, First Principles, Preface 4)

No Christian will say that the Trinity was “invented” or that the Holy Spirit is not God just because the early Christians didn’t have the best understanding yet.
