From what I know of Mormonism, it doesn’t have much of a historical basis. The converts are asked to simply seek in their hearts for a message of the Spirit that it’s true. As a Catholic, I have a bit more than that from which to refer when I know that Jesus was/is real, the Church is not only referred to in it’s own literature from the NT, but also from authorities in Roman and Jewish government over a long time period. The Bible is able to be studied, unlike the Book of Mormon (BoM) in the original languages, and there is actual archaeological evidence to back most of its historical (if not spiritual) claims.

In my discussions with missionaries, like many fundie Protestants, they were unable to refute the claims of the Church once I showed them the biblical sources and foundations for them. It’s a common fallacy that “Roman” Catholicism is not biblical; it’s easy to say it, since many Catholics don’t read and study their Bible to be sure of what it actually says. Even when challenged by evangelicals, they tend not to look up the source from which they have just been quoted. Usually, the quote is used out of context, like much of Catholic teaching. Yet, the Church teaches the Bible consistently, daily, weekly, in the Liturgy of the Word during Mass, something which is conveniently overlooked by aggressive fundies. That word is available, if not in Bibles, which tend to be nice decorations on a bookshelf but rarely opened, in the missalette available at Mass to most, if they are willing, and have time to read it and pray it. But that means being at Mass at least fifteen minutes before it starts.

**Hello…I am a former RC, I was raised RC, I attended Catholic private schools etc., I converted to LDS 28 years ago when I was 21 years old. I am here because of the intense interest of the LDS church recently in the media. I am not here to convert anyone, challenge anyones faith, or cause contention. I am here to honestly answer questions about my faith and I hope to learn more about the RC faith. (I have forgotten so much). I am happily married with 6 children and am very active in my church. I never served a mission, nor have I ever been married to more than one women…at a time. 😃 . I will absolutely respect your faith as my mother and siblings are all faithful RC’s and we get along great. Please respect me and mine and don’t try to “convert” me as my testimony of LDS doctrine is as iron. Hope we have some fun and learn a lot from eachother…or agree to disagree!😉 **
Welcome Brother Dorsey. I’m Catholic and belief in Catholicism is as iron, so we could compair religions in a non-threatening way. If you don’t mind I’ll share a few catholic beliefs and what I think LDS believe. Then you can tell me if I have the correct view of LDS doctine.
  1. We believe in God the Father who is the first Person of the Holy Trinity.
  2. Jesus is the second person of the Holy Trinity, and he is our savior.
  3. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Holy Trinity.
  4. There is only one God who is the Holy Trinity.
  5. Mormons worships God the Father because he is the god of this planet, but other planets have other gods equal to or even greater than God the Father.
  6. The Mormon “God the Father” had a Father and was once a man on a planet who worshipped his own Father God. He was subsequently exalted to godhood. He has a physical, human body. 3. It is the hope of the male Mormon to progress to the point where he too will be a god like God the Father and be ruling over his own planet.
  7. The Mormons have a saying: “What man is, God once was; what God is, man will become.”
IS THIS WHAT MORMONS BELIEVE?

Peace,

Ryan 🙂

**Baptism for the dead is in the New Testament. See first corinthians chapter 15: 29

29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dea**

**The “they are baptized” in St. Paul’s writings refers to heretics who did this. He didn’t say “Why do we baptize…”

And the passage is about the resurrection from the dead, not baptizing for the dead.**

That must be a very loose translation since the KJV is very clear what is meant.

You are expecting an awful lot—or you are very naïve. This place is the haunt of Mormon apostates and anti-Mormons, and they will want to do anything but! If you want to post here, you must expect a good fight, and be willing to give as good as you take—or better—or you won’t survive! 🙂

Hello and thanks for the opportunity to ask you a question or two.
  • Do you think the PBS show about the LDS history and faith gave Mormons a fair shake?
  • In the context of moral teachings, do you feel LDS is superior to Catholicism? If so, in which teachings?
  • How do you feel about comparisons between Joseph Smith and Muhammed?

If you have a specific question about Catholicism you might ask it over on one of the forums dealing exclusively with Catholicism rather than on the non-Catholic religions forum.
Take no notice of that. It is none of his business to tell anybody where to post and where not to post. You post wherever you want to post.

where is the oh- so important doctrine of baptism for the dead, in the book of mormon.?

Also, the Old testament is typologically fulfilled in the New Testament. The OT signs and wonders are more perfectly fulfilled in the NT(ie. ChrIst is the new adam, Mary is the new eve, mary is the NT ark which held the Word, Bread of Life and True vine)

In what way is the Book of Mormon typologically fulfilled from the NT scriptures?
What signs and wonders of the NT are perfectly fulfilled in the book of mormon, just as God made so in the OT and NT to prove that it was true and inspired? truly fulfilled.
The Book of Mormon runs parallel to both the OT as well as the NT. It starts from 600 BC and ends in 400 AD. The first 600 years of it parallels the OT, and the next 400 years of it parallels the NT. The OT segment of it contains prophecies that were fulfilled in the NT segment. It runs in every way parallel to the Bible.

Brother Dorsey,

You are going about this the wrong way. First, don’t write in bold. If it’s hard for you to read, change the resolution on your screen.
He posts however he wants to post. None of your business to tell him how to post.
Second if your “researching” Catholicism, there is a neat little button called the “search” button. It’s your friend, why don’t you get acquainted?
How intelligent! Where did you learn to be so smart?
Finally, if you want to answer “mormon” questions, wait until the questions are asked. There is no need to volunteer that you are a mormon and are hear to answer questions. There are plenty here for that.
That is a dumb comment. He is starting his first post, and trying to introduce himself and get aquainted. What is wrong with that?

it appears the author of this thread has abandoned ship.

Hello and thanks for the opportunity to ask you a question or two.
He can answer for himself of course; but here are my answers:
Do you think the PBS show about the LDS history and faith gave Mormons a fair shake?
Largely yes—a lot fairer than what is normally produced by non-LDS film producers.
In the context of moral teachings, do you feel LDS is superior to Catholicism? If so, in which teachings?
They both teach the same (in general) moral teachings; but LDS is superior in the observance of them.
How do you feel about comparisons between Joseph Smith and Muhammed?
Nothing!

so mormons cannot use any form of artificial contraception or they are in mortal sin?

And it’s none of your business to tell me how to respond to anyone. Who do you think YOU are?

How intelligent! Where did you learn to be so smart?

Where did I learn to be so smart? From the syntax and grammar of your question, it’s obvious I was educated in a different system then you were. Step down from your arrogant soap box and tone-down your holier-than-thou attitude.

That is a dumb comment. He is starting his first post, and trying to introduce himself and get aquainted. What is wrong with that?

The way in which he presented himself is an obvious baiting tactic. But I imagine in your extensive experience as a member of various message forums, you knew that already didn’t you?
