ALL catholics by definition MUST reject the BoM, D&C and PoGP as false and must also reject the claims to prophecy of JS and all subsequent LDS prophets and apostles. that makes catholics “antimormon” by your terms. of course mormons are anticatholic (and antipresbyterian and anti-methodist, etc.)by the same standards. i don’t know what that makes you. confused? you tell me. your posts are definitely anticatholic and disrespectful of the catholic faith
Here is brother dorsey is the spirit of christian love from his first post:

** I am here to honestly answer questions about my faith and I hope to learn more about the RC faith. (I have forgotten so much). I am happily married with 6 children and am very active in my church. I never served a mission, nor have I ever been married to more than one women…at a time. . I will absolutely respect your faith as my mother and siblings are all faithful RC’s and we get along great. Please respect me and mine and don’t try to “convert” me as my testimony of LDS doctrine is as iron. Hope we have some fun and learn a lot from eachother…or agree to disagree! **

But it quickly became a mormon bash. Catholics can reject the book of mormon, no problem from me. But the bashing and gnashing of teeth leaves much to be desired. Anyway, brother dorsey had christian love in his heart but…:o

Hey what do you get when you cross a Catholic and A Mormon?

I don’t know either…but you get a whole lot of it.😃 😛

I would have to say that paragraph sounds more like a wolf in sheep’s clothing to me. I’d like to be charitable with posts like these, but when a person comes on saying “don’t try to “convert” me” I suspect he’s here to try to convert us. When we begin to question his faith, instead of agreeing to disagree, he gets offended. Brother Dorsey had Christian love in his heart? Perhaps, but he can’t find us a Lamanite in the New World anywhere.

No, he doesn’t. He gets offended by the tone and wording of the posts. He wanted to have a dialogue but certain catholics just could not do it without offending his faith or religion.

It is not many catholics on this section of the forum, only a handful of posters who seemed to have forgotten christian love and understanding.

If he did find you a lamanite in the new world, what would you do? All faiths can be questioned and ripped apart. It does not take a genius to do so.

If he found a Lamanite I might become a member of the Community of Christ because they at least believe in the Trinity as taught in the Book of Mormon.

The Community of Christ does have its problems. The Restorationists would like to go back to the good old days to when the the church was called: The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They do not agree with the changes. And so, splits can occur. They have fallen on hard times:

**Cutbacks at the CofC:
The denomination appears to have fallen on hard economic times. They announced on 2006-JUN-14 that they have adopted a plan for downsizing their organization during the following six months. Staff reductions will total about 80 persons “including early retirements, voluntary separations and involuntary separations.” The new plan will maintain over 400 ministers, in churches around the world and in their international headquarters in Independence, MO.

Church president Steve Veazey said:

"We are sad that it has become necessary to reduce and re-deploy staff due to changing economic circumstances. The church is extending every type of employment transition and pastoral support within its ability to those whose lives are being disrupted by these changes. The Community of Christ continues to remain faithful to God in responding to leadership challenges as we passionately pursue our mission to proclaim Jesus Christ and to promote communities of peace throughout the world. We are grateful for all of our employees and the vast number of volunteer ministers who do so much to support the world-wide ministries of the church."**

The first split happened when Brigham Young rejected Joseph Smith III’s valid claim to the presidency. There is little doubt from what I have read that Joseph Smith had chosen his son to succeed him.

I don’t agree with everything on this web site, but think it is at least interesting:

Prior to becoming Catholic I seriously considered becoming a member of the Community of Christ. Its liberalism on homosexuality and abortion caused me to stay away from it. It also became clear to me the Book of Mormon had no basis in fact, but that wasn’t an impediment for my joining the Community of Christ since they allow their members to view the Book of Mormon as an inspired myth.

here he is telling us that he is not interested in becoming catholic and that he is convinced mormonism is true. he doesn’t ask any questions of us but makes himself available to answer ours. this is a blatant missionary overture. dorsey had converts in his heart.

thats what apologetics IS. we learn the truth that way. faith that can withstand scrutiny is valuable.

Hardly. Read my paste again. He seems like a sincere individual. But some just can’t see the human in a person. 🤷

i read it when he posted and again when you did. I know the LDS missionary approaches. I used to use them myself. it’s clear that he wasn’t coming here seeking to become catholic or to learn about the catholic faith. he was here to seek converts. did he come as a result of one of your calls on the LDS boards?

I see the human. I also see the every member a missionary. why are you trying so hard to get catholics to listen to LDS missionaries?

I’m not as much against Mormonism as I sound sometimes. I believe the Book of Mormon is false, but I do see that the Mormon Church today generally teaches good morals. Its believing members generally live honorable lives. Perhaps Joseph Smith started out as a person who looked at the Protestant Churches around him, saw their confusion, and thought he could invent something which would bring them together. Perhaps he was a pious fraud with assistance from Oliver Cowdrey and Sidney Rigdon. It seems to me that he started out thoroughly Trinitarian as reflected in the Book of Mormon. Unfortunately, as seems to be the case with several self-proclaimed prophets he soon veered off into bad doctrine and behavior that can only be considered a kind of megalomania. It caused him to wind up destroying a printing press and getting shot which is unfortunate because his followers were able to uplift him as some kind of martyr. Joseph seems to only have been minimally acquainted with Catholicism, mainly believing in the stereotypes of the Protestant American frontier. In one of his discourses he even claimed the Catholic Church was probably closer to the truth than the Protestants who had come out of it. I tend to see Joseph as someone who had at least some tendency towards mental illness. It is not surprising that one of his sons had a serious case of mental illness. I’m even willing to hope that somehow Joseph may be in heaven right now. All of my sympathy with Mormonism does not change the fact that Mormonism has been clearly debunked in my mind. Mormons and Catholics can surely work together to promote the traditional family and to discourage abortion. At some point I hope Mormonism completely rejects Joseph’s bizarre later teachings on the Godhead, accepts ex-Nihilo creation and recognizes the Trinity as the only ultimate God. When that happens I will rejoice. I’m sure Christians everywhere will welcome them into the Christian fold once they accept Jesus for who he really is. We can’t compromise our own faith by accepting Mormonism’s current teachings on Jesus as somehow Christian. The seeds for accepting the Trinity can be found in Mormon scripture – perhaps Mormons will look at their own scriptures, especially the Book of Mormon, to lead them to the truth about Jesus’ divinity.

re: American Frontier, Catholicism was banned in 12 of the 13 original colonies. Maryland was established specifically as a colony for Catholics, because they were not allowed to settle in the other colonies which were entirely Protestant.

In Smith’s time, a religious fervor had reignited, spurred on by organized religions viewing The Enlightement, with the resulting thoughts of deism, unitarianism and universalism as something that needed to be fought against.

During Smith’s forming of the Mormon religion, many were embracing transcendentalism.

So no, where Smith lived, in the frontier of a new country that was very evangelical Protestant, it is highly unlikely he was exposed to Catholicism, other than the anti-Catholicism that had been present since the first Europeans colonized the east coast.

That is one of the worst talks I have ever seen – I well remember hearing his distortion of how the doctrine of the Trinity came about. That you would direct us to it shows your bias against Christianity and once again shows that your claim to be Catholic is suspect. If you really are Catholic you should strongly consider not taking the Eucharist. This talk is clear evidence that Mormons cannot be considered Christian at this time.

Mormons are not able to claim the name Christian, by virtue of the fact that they are polytheistic. They are perhaps closer to Hindus in this respect. They believe in a multiplicity of gods. They do not believe in the Holy Trinity. They have a blasphemous belief about the conception of Our Lord. They have doctrines that are strange and bizarre ie: baptism for the dead. They follow a false “prophet” who invented a religion to satisfy his lust for power and unbridled sex. No major religion recognises mormonism as Christian, in spite of mormon protestations to the contrary. Calling yourself Christian does not make it so.

Maybe someday whyme will tell us the doctrines of his new religion. I think they are LDS, with the rituals of Catholic Mass, and the Eucharist, with it being ok in his religion to take the sacrament at an LDS service. Oh, and religious, because its cool to have religious in your own personal religion and hang with them and have them tell you that your new religion is OK by them (as whyme hears it).

Confession with a priest because Catholics are forgiven, where if he 'fessed up with a mormon Bishop, he just might get ex’d. And this won’t do, as his doctrines are mainly LDS.

So, he’s mixed the two religions up, and is mainly mormon. Maybe whyme, you can name your new religion Morlic.
